President’s Message 2nd Quarter 2017: As we enter this quarter, I’d like to update you on our chapter, including our meetings, literature, and future events.
For the remainder of the quarter we will meet at Bethesda Senior Center, and hope to use Piccadilly Restaurant to cater our lunches. We have a great time here, and the staff welcomes us with open arms. The board is already working on an acceptable Piccadilly Restaurant contract. As we close out the year we will again have our general meetings at Delmar Gardens, in September, October, and November. September we will have our annual picnic. October is our brown bag auc-tion. November is our annual Thanksgiving dinner.
A literature update is also underway by our board. A committee lead by Gail Bridgette will update and redo our chapter literature. Team Five had a webinar training meeting in prepa-ration for training all our members on using social media. We ask that you bring your smart phones when we hold this general meeting.
We continue to have a great time at our meetings. These meetings include both fun and edu-cation from our speakers and our activities. This is a very strong chapter—a chapter where members are proud of their membership. As we continue to grow, the board continues to provide exciting events. In fact, we have a great board, very eager to share new ideas for this chapter.
We have experienced the challenges that come with any move. One challenge was with food. Delmar Garden spoiled our members—the meals were a meeting highlight. We searched very hard to find a caterer who could handle our group needs. We feel good about our negotiations to have Piccadilly Restaurant cater for us.
Take a moment today to visit our website at www.aarpgwinnett.com and join our Facebook group at AARP Gwinnett Georgia. Become a member. Join one of our many committees. Travel with us as we venture out and about. At our meetings you get to have fun, enjoy out-standing speakers, and also learn about what is going on in Gwinnett County.
Since the beginning, the Gwinnett Chapter strives to offer individual members in Gwinnett County an opportunity to come together monthly to learn, share, and experience information and knowledge pertinent to the times. All persons who are members in good standing of the AARP National Organization are eligible to become members of Gwinnett Chapter 2714, which meets monthly, on the fourth Thursday, starting promptly at 11:00a.m.
In this exciting chapter we enjoy fun and togetherness, not to mention great activities. We’ve built on our technology with our computers. From your home you can see our activities, upcoming events, and text other members of the chapter. Before each luncheon you get our notification through your email about the next upcoming activity. Members appreciate our family driven Gwinnett Chapter. Thank you for the oppor-tunity to serve you as chapter president. I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting.

I’M JUST SAYING…
I’m Just Saying…
It seems we had just said the last Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year, when to my surprise there goes the Easter Bunny hippity hopping down the road.
After all these years of being retired, I still Love It – the feeling of having “Paid My Dues,” doing what I want to do – well, most of the time… Grandchildren and other family members remember you’re retired now and they want to make certain you don’t get bored. Ha! But, it’s all good.
The community is still abuzz about the concert… On Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2017, the Seniors of The Heritage Ministry at Christ The King Baptist Church hosted a Black and White attired Gospel Jazz Concert. The concert, unique in its concept, was yet another innovative activity.
It was presented to the church by Senior Pastor Rev. Marion Sailor, and brought to fruition by the Seniors of the Heritage Ministry. The Concert featured Ike’s Jazz Band. S-e-n-s-a-t-i-o-n-a-l!! The singers in the band, F-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c!! The food was um-m-m-m Good and Plenty. A Sunday to be remembered. Rev. Sailor, petite in size, herculean in her all-inclusive, ongoing plans for church and community. An annual affair, she’s thinking…? Bra-vo!!
I’m still working to get Confucious Says into our newsletter. He “states” an adage each day, something like what you get in fortune cookies. In the meantime keep checking out what the stars “say” they have in store for you – AstrologyAnswers.com. Have fun.

HEALTH information
What are some different reasons for memory loss?
Aging, head injuries, alcohol and drug abuse, plus mental health disorders, are some reasons for memory loss, explains MedlinePlus. Other reasons include a vitamin B-12 deficiency, brain injuries and cancer treatments.
Memory loss due to normal aging is usually not a cause for concern, if it does not interfere with work, home and social life. A mental health disorder, such as stress, anxiety or depression can cause confusion, forgetfulness and lack of focus, states Mayo Clinic. Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and dementia are additional mental health problems that cause memory loss, states MedlinePlus.
Individuals that consume excessive alcohol, especially those that have alcoholism or mix alcohol with other drugs or medication, suffer from memory loss due to the impairment of mental capabilities, notes Mayo Clinic. Brain tumors, concussions and stroke are types of brain injuries that cause memory loss. Chemotherapy and bone-marrow transplants are some cancer treatments that cause memory loss, states MedlinePlus. Memory loss that disrupts daily life may be a symptom of Alzheimer's or another dementia. Alzheimer's is a brain disease that causes a slow decline in memory, thinking and reasoning skills. There are 10 warning signs and symptoms.
When to seek help for memory loss
If you're worried about memory loss — especially if memory loss affects your ability to complete your usual daily activities — talk to your doctor. He or she will likely do a physical exam, as well as check your memory and problem-solving skills. Sometimes other tests are needed as well. Treat-ment will depend on what's contributing to your memory loss.
