Transcript of Our Dear Audience, - Running to Places Theatre...

Our Dear Audience,

Welcome to the first show of our 2015 season! We’re thrilled that you’re here with us.

Seven years ago exactly, we opened our very first show – Fame! We chose that show to be our inaugural show for a few specific reasons. Besides being a great musical with lots of thrilling numbers and compelling storylines, it was representative of what I envisioned R2P could be when I cooked it up in the first place: “This is not your typical youth theatre fare.” It’s intense, challenging, sometimes shocking, honest, and it tells the stories of passionate young people working hard to hone their artistic crafts and find themselves along the way. It doesn’t shy away from the real struggles and drama of teen life. It soars because of the electric life force that radiates from the individuals who make up the collective that is so much more than the sum of its parts. That’s Fame. That’s R2P.

This show also marks the first slot where every last company member from season one, down to the youngest sixth grader, has now aged out of the company. Most are off at college, and we miss them dearly. We are grateful for all those early pioneers did to help make R2P what it is today, and we love hearing updates and getting visits from them. (And we love working with them in new capacities – resident music director Jeremy Pletter and choreographer Fatima Sowe were company members from those earliest days! Fatima was in the ensemble of Fame 2008!)

Another aspect of R2P that we’re thrilled to revisit is the return of one of our most fundamental core principles: FREE PARTICIPATION! As of this season, students are free to participate in R2P shows at no cost at all. People have been asking, “How did you do that? Did you get a big grant or sudden windfall?” The simple answer is that we, as a company, made tearing down that barrier to entry our guiding principle when designing this season’s budget. Through careful management of expenses, we saw how it would be possible, and we went for it. And we saw an immediate impact: there was a 50% increase in the number of students who auditioned this fall versus one year ago, and many new students mentioned the elimination of participation fees as the deciding factor for them.

We’re very proud of this decision, but it is not without risk, nor is it the end of the story. We have made a promise to the young people we serve to keep participation in Running to Places accessible to everyone. To that end, we also will rely – more than ever – on our generous community to join us in helping keep that burden off of the shoulders of our kids. If you support the principle of universal access to the artistic and personal development that participation in R2P provides, please consider making a donation today.

On behalf of the entire Running to Places family – thank you, and enjoy the show!

Joey Steinhagen Artistic Director

She would like to thank the entire cast and crew for being so amazing. She would also like to extend her thanks to Joey, Jeremy, Fatima, and G-Quan for their incredible hard work and general kindness. And lastly, a HUGE thank you to her mom and dad for driving her to each rehearsal. Without them, this couldn't have happened. "Enjoy the show!!"

She was a part of the IHS fall play Welcome to the Monkey House and ASM and has been part of many other R2P shows, the most recent being Fiddler as ensemble. She is looking forward to being in Daisy Pulls It Off later this year and hopes you enjoy the show!!

Joey Steinhagen (Artistic Director/Resident Director) grew up doing community theatre in a company called Song & Dance Associates that was surely the spiritual ancestor of Running to Places. He founded R2P in 2007 as a way to bring together the many passionate and talented young people of this area so they could create theatre, develop life skills, and make some of the best friendships of their lives – much as he did when he was young. He has been teaching, acting in, and directing theatre for young people throughout Tompkins County since 1993, and received his BFA in Acting from Ithaca College in 1996. Over the years, he has directed musicals and plays at Ithaca and Dryden High Schools; Dryden, Boynton, and DeWitt Middle Schools; the Northern Lights Learning Center; and the Hangar Theatre’s Kiddstuff series. Joey has taught acting at Ithaca College, Cornell, SUNY Cortland, Hangar Theatre’s Next Generation program, and the Ithaca Youth Bureau. As an actor, he has appeared at the Kitchen Theatre in Tony and the Soprano (“Tony,” world premiere), Precious Nonsense (“Pete,” world premiere), The Intelligent Design of Jenny Chow (“Dr. Yakunin”), and We Won’t Pay! We Won’t Pay! (“Luigi”). He is grateful to his beautiful fiancé Uniit for all of her love, patience, and support. He is proudest of his favorite production: his son Aram.

Kalil Hendel (Mr. Sheinkopf) is very happy to add the role of stick-up-butt music teacher to his repertoire, previously complemented by performances as sensitive bad boy (John Bender in The Breakfast Club with Take Ten), egotistical ladies man (Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing with Shakespeare in the Basement), man without shirt (Frank in There's Something About Jack with Ithaca High School), and space slug (Jabba the Hutt in William Shakespeare's Star Wars: Verily, a New Hope with Take Ten). He's a senior at IHS, and by the time this show comes out maybe he'll know where he's going to college. Probably not though. Look for him in future roles as “waiter” and “bartender with an English degree.”

Kamryn Phlegar (Iris) is in 10th grade at Lansing High School. She is excited to be making her R2P debut! She has done many shows throughout the years such as, Honk, Beauty and the Beast and Seussical. When she is not performing in shows, Kamryn loves to ski, read, bake and dance. Kamryn would like to thank her family and friends for all of their support and she hopes you enjoy the show!

Keara Byron (Ensemble) is thrilled to be in this fresh to death production of Fame! Some of her favorite roles include: Gertrude in Seussical, Little Red in Into The Woods, and Penny in Hairspray with R2P. She was also Elle Woods in Ithaca High School's production of Legally Blonde last spring. In March, Keara will be playing Paula Abagnale in IHS's production of Catch Me If You Can. She would like to thank her voice teacher Sharon for being wonderful, Joey and Jeremy for being awesome, and a special thanks to Fatima for being an amazing mentor and taking her on for dance-y stuff. "We put a lot of HARD WORK into this production. I hope you enjoy!"

Kendra Walkuski (Ensemble) is excited to be a part of this production of Fame! She has been dancing for 13 years and is currently dancing at the Performing Arts Institute in Cortland, NY. Kendra has recently been a part of Fiddler on the Roof (R2P), Once Upon a Mattress (R2P), and The Music Man (Dryden High School). She would like to thank the directors, cast and crew for all their Hard Work! Break a Leg!

Laura Fegely (Mabel) is excited/sad to be in the first show of her last season with R2P. If you've seen an R2P show recently, chances are, she's been in it. When she isn't rehearsing for a show, Laura spends most of her "free time" applying to college, preparing for college auditions, or worrying about college. Enjoy the show! FAME!

Lisa Podulka (Ms. Bell), a junior at IHS, is thrilled to be working on her 18th R2P show! Favorite roles with R2P include the “Jester” in Once Upon a Mattress and “Lucinda” in Into the Woods. At Cortland Repertory Theater, she played “Pippa” in Spider’s Web and was a child ensemble member in Joseph...Dreamcoat. At IHS, she was “Pilar” in Legally Blonde, and will be “Carol” in Catch Me If You Can. Offstage, she enjoys singing in Vitamin L, dancing at the Cortland Performing Arts Institute, and petting her cats. Thank you to Jeremy, Joey, Fatima, G-Quan, Sophia, and everyone else who helped with this production. Thank you, also, to Mom and Dad for driving to rehearsals.

Loie Faulkner (Ensemble) is beyond thrilled to be dancin’ on the sidewalk in her 12th R2P production!! Other favorite Running to Places roles include “Minstrel” in Once Upon a Mattress, “Florinda” in Into The Woods, and “Penny” in Honk! As a junior at Ithaca High School, Loie also participates in Ithaca Children’s Choir Chorale and the IHS Concert Choir. In her spare time, Loie enjoys napping, talking about her bed, and loudly complaining about how much she’d rather be sleeping. Thanks to her parents for providing transportation and support, to Sinj for rocking, to Janet for constant inspiration and tough love, and to the directors for bringing together an incredible production. We’re gonna live forever!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maddi Carroll (Ensemble) is a freshman at Ithaca High School. She was the Fairy Godmother in Cinderella at Boynton Middle School, a Hotbox Girl in Guys and Dolls at BMS and an ensemble member in State Fair at BMS and is very excited to be Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in May for R2P! She is in concert choir and women's choir at Ithaca High School. She's very excited to be in her first R2P show. She would like to thank her parents and her sister for encouraging her to go for it, and Crystal Casselberry for making sure the she auditioned for R2P and always being there for her. Enjoy the show!

Maddie Vandenberg (Ensemble) is a senior at Ithaca High School and is so excited to be working on her 19th show with Running to Places! Past shows include Fiddler on the Roof (Hodel), Once Upon a Mattress (Lady Larken), A Christmas Carol (Dance Capt./Ensemble), Into the Woods (Milky White), and Honk! (Ida) with R2P; and Legally Blonde (Serena/Dance Capt.) and How to Succeed in Business…(Smitty) with Ithaca High School. She sings with and is on the Youth Board of Vitamin L, and she plays violin with Ithaca Talent Education. She would like to thank her parents, Joey, Jeremy, Fatima, the extremely hardworking cast, and everyone else who worked so incredibly hard on this gem of a show! Enjoy the show! FAME!

Matthew Skrovan (Joe Vegas) is a sophomore at Ithaca High School, is thrilled to be a part of Fame! Some of his previous roles with R2P have been "The Cat" in Honk, "Jack" in Into the Woods, "The Prince" in Once Upon a Mattress, and "Lazer Wolf" in Fiddler on the Roof. He also recently played "Jack" in a regional production of Into the Woods with The Cider Mill Playhouse. He would like to thank his voice teacher Erica Steinhagen and the team at R2P. Enjoy the show!

Michael Sloan (Nick), an 11th grader at Ithaca High School, is extremely excited to be in his fifth year with R2P and his ninth show! Some of his favorite R2P roles include Young Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Rooster in Annie, and Oliver in Oliver. Outside of R2P, Michael has been in shows at Ithaca College (The Little Prince and Children of Eden) and Cornell University (Bernstein’s Mass). When not on stage, Michael enjoys playing soccer, skiing, and singing with the Choirs at IHS, and with Vitamin L. He would like to thank all of the R2P directors, cast, crew, and designers for making this show possible. He would also like to thank his family for their support and for driving him to rehearsals. Enjoy the show!

Mike “Sparkles” Garrett (Lighting Designer): Mike’s interest in theatre began at a young age, but it was not until his junior year of high school that he was introduced to technical theater by his roommate. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Animal Science, but was most often seen in the Schwartz Center’s scene shop, where he began as stage carpenter, rising to lighting designer and eventually technical director for Leonard Bernstein’s Mass in 2009. He has worked as the productions manager for the Cornell Concert Commission, as well as Slope Day. Mike also served as the set designer, technical director, and production manager for the Melodramatics Theatre Company. He has run sound for many concerts and several R2P shows. His love of theatre also has led him to work in concerts, film, and web media. Nicholas Cancalosi-Dean (Ensemble): A real doozy, this one. After featuring in Ithaca High School’s Legally Blonde as the miraculously acquiescent stodgy obstructionist Winthrop in a ground-breaking performance that earned him the lobby-panegyric: “Good job. No really, good job,” from an esteemed member of the local thespian milieu, and resulted in a piece of the stage splintering off (hence the ground-breaking), our young manqué-in-training is grateful for being allowed a spot in the cast of Fame. Also due their thanks are his magisterial cast-members for tolerating his stray-dog presence and saturnine abstraction for the entirety of the production. Rupture a kidney, as they say!

Pierre Saint-Perez (Ensemble): Pierre is a student at the Lehman Alternative Community School, where he has been in their Shakespeare program, most recently, as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. This is his 2nd R2P show. He’d like to thank everyone involved with the show.

Rebecca "Beckie" Ryan (Ensemble), a sophomore at Notre Dame High School, is thrilled to be making her Running to Places debut. Beckie, a member of the ND Drama Club, has been a Lady in Once Upon a Mattress and a Storyteller in Once On This Island. She is also a member of chorus. While not on stage, she loves to sing and hang out with friends. She would like to thank Jeremy, Joey, and Fatima for all their hard work to make Fame great! She also would like to thank her new R2P friends she has made along the way. "Enjoy the show!"

Ruth Silcoff (Ensemble) is a sophomore at Ithaca High School who is excited to be in her first ever theatre production. Outside of school she spends most of her time dancing, skiing, debating, and hanging out with friends. Ruth would like to thank all of her past and present teachers who have aided in her development in the arts. She would also like to thank her parents for bringing her to and from rehearsals, and providing her with everlasting support. She thanks her friends for coming and supporting her, and hopes that you enjoy the show!

Ryan Mitchell (Ensemble) a current sophomore at Trumansburg High School and is very excited to be part of his first R2P production – Fame. He has been in a number of school shows including Seussical Jr., Back to the 80’s, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Grease, and The Secret Case of Sherlock Holmes. He loves to do karate, play the trumpet and sing inside and outside of school. He would like to thank Joey, Jeremy, Fatima, G-Quan and Anna with all of their help to make this show the best that it can be. He would especially like to thank the cast for all of their hard work and dedication to this show. It has been an honor to work with all of you – it’s been a lot of fun. Enjoy the show!

Sofia Boucher (Ensemble) is a senior at Ithaca High School, and is excited to be a part of her 7th Running to Places Show! Sofia joined R2P in her freshman year when she moved to Ithaca from Hawaii. Most recently she has been the Headless Ghost/Sally Anderson in A Christmas Carol (R2P), a Delta Nu in Legally Blonde (IHS), and a townsperson in Fiddler on the Roof (R2P). Outside of theatre, Sofia enjoys dancing hula and spending time with friends. She hopes you enjoy the show and the cast and crew’s "Hard Work"!

Sophie Callister (Ensemble) is a freshman at Lansing High School and is excited to make her R2P debut in Fame. She has recently starred as Alice in LMS ‘s production of Alice @ Wonderland as well as Asaka, The Goddess of the Earth in LMS’s musical production of Once On This Island. Sophie is currently singing with LHS’s Varsity Chorale and Mixed Chorus and plays viola in LHS’s orchestra. She has been dancing since she could walk and is a former member of TC Twisters and The TNJ dance team. Sophie would like to thank her family and her R2P family for all of their love and support!

Sophie Tantillo (Stage Manager) is in her fifth season with Running to Places, and in those years, she has enjoyed her time being involved with stage management in the company. Sophie is a sophomore at Trumansburg High School where she assists in the lighting and costuming of drama club shows. She works behind the scenes as well as onstage for many shows. You may have seen her previously in last year's A Christmas Carol as Mrs. Cratchit, Into the Woods as Cinderella's Mother, or Dot the Goose in Honk. Sophie has been a part of the stage management team in R2P’s Annie, Into the Woods, Once Upon a Mattress, R2P’s Best of Broadway, and others. Being the stage manager of this show has been great and Sophia has enjoyed working with the talented cast and all the new members of R2P. She would like to thank all her friends in the show and in the company, the Tburg folks for the carpools, and her parents and her sister for everything. Thanks to Joey, Jeremy, Anna, Fatima, G-Quan, Saihou, along with the entire production team of this show. A special thanks to all her stage management mentors she’s had throughout her theatre involvement. Enjoy the show!

Sydney Preston (Ensemble) is thrilled to be in Fame! In her free time she enjoys singing, playing the French horn and hanging out with her friends. Some of her previous roles include Daisy Mae in Lil Abner, the Rose Seller in Oliver, Laura in Back to the 80's and a few other small roles. Fame being Sydney's first production with Running to Places, she is very excited for the years to come! She would like to thank Joey, Jeremy, Fatima and everyone involved with making this production possible. Sydney would also like to thank her mom and the Mitchell family for driving her to rehearsals.

Talia Lehmann (Ensemble) is excited to perform with R2P for the first time in Fame. Although this is her first performance with R2P, she has been dancing competitively with The Next Jennaration for the past six years. Talia is in 9th grade at LACS and has been a part of their Shakespeare program playing Corin in As You Like It and Abraham and the Apothecary in Romeo and Juliet. Talia was thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of the cast of Fame. Enjoy the show!

Tamar Shapiro-Tamir (Ensemble) is excited to be back for her fourth R2P show, following Annie, Once Upon a Mattress, and Fiddler on the Roof. She "would like to thank her producers," Noa Shapiro-Tamir, Ian Shapiro and Dalya Tamir; Jeremy Pletter for being both her music director and her voice teacher; Erica Steinhagen for being her other voice teacher; and Joey Steinhagen for being...awesome? "This show was a lot of fun to put on and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!"
