Pedro, California has wrapped up. Passengers have enjoyed traveling the country in style to and from the convention on The Observatory and Birch Grove! We passed through some of America’s most beautiful landscapes as we traveled along Amtrak’s California Zephyr and Coast Starlight. The California Zephyr took passengers through the picturesque landscapes of Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. Even more breathtaking scenery greeted the passengers as the cars were pulled behind Amtrak’s Southwest Chief on the return trip home.

Among the valued passengers on this trip was Carl Morrison, a writer for TrainWeb.com. You can check out his coverage of this event, complete with story and pictures, by clicking on the following link: http://trainweb.org/carl/BirchGrove/

The AAPRCO Convention special train pulled by steam engine and three Amtrak diesel engines from Los Angeles to San Diego attracted a lot of attention from rail enthusiasts. The unique nature of a train containing such a large number of private rail cars prompted a lot of people to document this event and post their footage on YouTube. We have selected two of the many excellent videos posted for you to view. You can view them by clicking on the following links:

Indiana. Ride roundtrip from Cincinnati, Ohio to Batesville, Indiana and back. Once in Batesville you will have the option of a three hour layover there or take the side trip from Batesville to Greensburg and back. This is an excellent trip for rail fans and first time riders with the Cincinnati Railway.

Past Trips

Chattanooga Inspection Trip

Every year members of the Cincinnati Southern Trustee board take an inspection trip of the tracks from Cincinnati down to Chattanooga, Tennessee. The city of Cincinnati owns the rail road track line from Cincinnati to Chattanooga and leases it to the Norfolk Southern Railroad.

This year’s trip took place from July 23- 27 and was organized by Tom McOwen of the Cincinnati Railway Company. The trip was by invitation only and was not open to the general public. Everyone, including the honored guests invited to ride along had a great time. Activities and trips in Chattanooga included: Lookout Mountain, The Incline, Rock City, Ruby Falls, Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and the restored downtown area.

The 2008 fireworks train to see the Cincinnati Bell/WEBN Fireworks on August 31st was a success! Boarding at McCullough Yard went smoothly and we all had a great time riding to the fireworks on a train, and avoiding the congestion of traffic and hassle of parking downtown! We had a great turn out on this trip and hope that everyone will join us again next year! For those of you that couldn’t make it this year, be sure to put this trip on your calendar for next year!

The Cincinnati Railway Company’s private rail car, the Observatory, and the Chapel Hill Corporation’s private rail car, the Chapel Hill, earned the honor of being the first rail cars to enter the brand new Greensburg Honda Plant and the first to be pulled by the newly painted locomotive 5003 owned by the CIND Railroad. The cars were leased by the I&O Railroad for transportation to the Honda Plant in Greensburg, Indiana on September 10, 2008. This trip was for the inspection of the tracks and the plant by a team from Honda and Rail America’s Sr. Management Team. Passengers were treated to a gourmet breakfast prepared by Cincinnati Railway Company’s own private chef, Chef Bill Hoeffer.
