Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, National Assisted Living Week® provides a unique opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers, and the surrounding communities to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance encourages assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinctive aspect of long term care.-(https://www.ahcancal.org/) Autumn always seems like a great time to refresh and that’s just what we’re doing in our Engagement Department. During the global and national pause we had the opportunity to look at our programming and see what worked and what had once worked but no longer held its allure. This fall we are excited to introduce our all new Music History Hour led by Jon Valencia. Jon has been at the helm of reception since Silver Square opened it’s doors and we’re so excited to have his charisma and creativity in our Engagement Department where he’ll serve as our Resident Engagement Assistant. Jon holds a BS from Emerson College in Boston and is so well suited to create and assist in leading new, high-end engagements. We’ve refreshed our Creative Writing Group that gathers weekly to explore all manner of writing including poetry, shorts stories, and memoir writing. The uniqueness of this group is in the incredible stories written and read aloud by our residents. New writing prompts are issued each week by our Resident Engagement Director, Monique who hosts the group. Monique holds an MA in Arts Education from New York University and relishes the opportunity to encourage creativity in our Silver Square residents. Everyone has stories to tell! Another new engagement that’s quickly becoming a favorite is Musical Mondays where we live stream a Broadway or West End theater production right to our Media Room television. The experience feels as close to actually being in a theater as seems possible right now and we all so enjoy discussing the show both before and after the viewing. We’re excited to continue to host live music concerts outside while the weather remains beautiful. We find it very exciting exploring new opportunities for engaging our residents and reinvigorating our community.

This month we’ll partner with My Friend’s

Place, a local shelter here in Dover for folks

who are experiencing homelessness. From

their website, “Thousands of people have

called My Friend’s Place home over these

past 30 years.”

Currently My Friend’s Place is housing four

children who are in need of school supplies.

We have specific requests of supplies for

each child including notebooks and backpacks as well as sneakers and clothing.

We are accepting monetary donations through September 5th. Donations can be presented

to our receptionist. At Silver Square we absolutely love to give back to our community!
