Memorize and Spread Vital Resources to save a life. It is important to commit two simple resources to memory. The first is the pregnancy help hotline number, 800-712-HELP. The second is the website www.pregnancycenters.org. As pro-lifers, we must always be ready at a moment’s notice to help people who may be tempted to have an abortion, and to point them to real alternatives.
vocation view—Are you willing to surrender your life to God? You are promised eternal life. (Luke 22:14-23:1-49)
Today’s Gospel passage reminds us that life is precious and the gift of time on this earth is just that — a gift. None of us knows how much time will be granted to us, so it is urgent that we use this gift intentionally to glorify God and serve our neighbor. Jesus offers the parable of the fig tree to further illustrate this truth. The owner of the orchard came searching for fruit on a fig tree he had had planted in his orchard. Finding no fruit on the tree after three years, he told the gardener to cut it down. But the gar-dener intercedes and asks for one more year to cultivate and fertil-ize the tree in hopes it would bear fruit in the future. The fig tree
Sunday Readings and Backgrounds3rd Sundaya of Lent • Week of March 24, 2019Reading I : Exodus 3:1-8a, 13-15God’s name is: “I AM WHO AM.”• In the first reading from Exodus, Moses questions
God’s call.• God’s answer, “I AM who Am” has lead believers to
contemplate the meaning of God’s reply to Moses.• Today’s passage shows that even in the moment of per-
sonal revelation, God remains a mystery.
Reading II : 1 Corinthians 10:1-6, 10-12What is written about Moses is to help us.• The reading from 1 Corinthians is Paul’s meditation
on the fate of the people who were delivered in the Exodus.
• Not all of the people who were freed remained faithful to God.
• Paul stresses that being delivered from sin through Baptism is not enough. We must continue to turn back to God when we have turned away.
STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION
Gospel : Luke 13:1-9Jesus tells us to repent.• Today’s Gospel story was Jesus’ answer to those who judged
others through the theory of retribution.• Humans cannot see enough to judge God’s purpose in events.• The parable illustrates God’s patience concerning human sin.

was not dying; it simply wasn’t doing much of anything at all. Can this be said of us and our lives as well? The season of Lent is a time to reflect carefully on the way we spend our time. Do we give first priority to God, tending to our spiritual growth and sacramental life with diligence? Do we give next priority to our loved ones, focusing intentionally on them each day without distractions from phones, screens or thoughts of work? If not, now is the moment to repent of our waste of time or of misplaced priorities on our use of time. God is merciful but just. Let’s turn to Him and ask Him to make our lives fruitful while we still have time to do so.
