JPS Campus Police: More Than Just Security The Jenks Campus Police Department has been an active police department since 1985. Over the years, the department has grown and become more involved in the activities in around the campuses of Jenks Public Schools. They were among the first Campus Police Departments for a school system in the state of Oklahoma. The JPS Campus Police currently have eight full-time officers and five reserve officers. The full-time officers are Chief Jack Myers, Assistant Chief Perry Marler, Officer David Atkinson, Officer Jesse Berenger, Officer Paul Casteel, Officer Myron Sander, and Officer Travis Wallace. Kim Riley serves as the administrative assistant and dispatcher for the JPS Campus Police. This department protects our students, staff, and sites 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All of the officers are full state certified police officers and they attend annual training to maintain their certification. Committed to continuous improvement, they participate in regular training to hone their skills and increase their proficiency in order to perform their jobs at the highest level. The Campus Police Department is a full-service organization that handles issues in the same ways as other city police departments. These officers investigate and handle many different issues including: child abuse and neglect cases, assaults, domestic violence, protective orders, burglaries, and as many high school students are aware, parking issues. They also join with teachers and administrators to conduct safety programs and counseling sessions. Jenks Public Schools is fortunate to have such a professional department.

Helping Tushka Tornado Victims Last April will not be forgotten in the small town of Tushka, which is located about 130 miles south of Tulsa. The residents lost homes, personal belongings and their school when a tornado swept trough their small com-munity. According to the school board chair-man, Tushka School was “pretty well wiped out.” In cooperation with KSQ Architects and Manhattan Construction Company, Jenks Public Schools is donating four truckloads of surplus furniture and supplies to help Tushka Public Schools get back on their feet. Tushka Superintendent, Billy Pingleton says, “We lost everything from buildings to supplies. When Jenks contacted us and let us know that they were willing to donate the furniture, it was such a blessing. Instead of finding a desk here and there, we were able to get enough furniture from one place. This will enable us to start this school year on time. We are so thankful for the generosity of Jenks Public Schools.”

Representatives from KSQ Architects, Manhatten Construction and Jenks Public Schools help load surplus furniture and supplies that will be taken to Tushka Public Schools.

Fall 2011 Testing for Gifted Services Scheduled The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), a test used by Jenks Public Schools for identification of intellectu-ally gifted students, will be given Sep-tember 7 - 9, 2011. Any first through twelfth grade student, not already iden-tified for gifted services, may be nomi-nated by a parent or teacher for test-ing. All students in the third and sixth grade, not already identified for gifted services, will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test in March, 2012. Students may test once per academic year, therefore third and sixth grade students who test in the fall, will not be eligible to re-test with their peers in the spring. Students whose CogAT Composite age-based score is at or above the 97th percentile will be eligible to automatically receive gifted services. Others who do not score at this level, but whose composite age-based score is

at least at or above the 95th percentile, including the standard error of measure, will automatically be further assessed based upon the Jenks Public Schools matrix. In addition, parents or teachers of students scoring with a composite age-based score below the 95th percentile may request initiation of a matrix based upon the student’s individual subtest scores (Non-verbal, Verbal, or Quantitative). Nomination forms for this test may be picked up at the site or accessed online through the Jenks Public Schools website at www.jenksps.org. Under the Parents heading: >Curriculum >Gifted Services >Parent Checklist for CogATParents who wish to have their child tested for potential gifted services must complete the nomination form and return it to their Site Gifted Coordinator no later than Tuesday,

Breaking Ground on West Elementary Campus The 2011-2012 school year will be the last time third and fourth grade students will be in the buildings on the south side of 91st Street. Ground was broken on June 23, 2011, for the future third and fourth grade building that will be located north of the Jenks West Elementary campus across 91st Street. Over the last five years, West Elementary has grown by more than 100 students per year. The consistent growth on the west side of Jenks has created the need to expand West Elementary. With construction beginning this year, the building is scheduled to open for the 2012 - 2013 school year.

Site Principal, Suzanne Lair, is excited about the expanding campus and the design of the new facility, saying “This new building is designed to meet the needs of our learners, encouraging collaboration among students and teachers.” The entrance is designed to ensure the safety of staff and students. Visitors to the building will be required to enter through a reception area that is completely separated from the rest of the building. They will then be required to sign in using Lobby Guard, The building is designed by GH2 Architects and the construction manager is Crossland Construction Company.

JWE students Jillian Bethel, Rajita Singh, and Anderson Acebo break ground with representatives from JPS, GH2 Architects, and Crossland Construction.

Extended School Year for Sino-Trojan Academy Students that attend the Jenks East Intermediate Sino-Trojan Academy have had a summer filled with fun and learning. The aim of the Sino-Trojan Academy is to develop future leaders who are globally competent and inter culturally skilled through a rigorous and unique experience melding American and Chinese best practices and educational philosophies. These students commit to attending an expanded school day, 45 minutes a day, and an expanded school year, 10 more days than the JPS instructional calendar. The expansion of the school day and year is based on the knowledge that Chinese students have five and a half more years of educational experience by the time they graduate from high school. This summer was also an expanded learning experience for these students. Students were given the opportunity to participate in the Chinese Language Immersion Camp or a China Educational Field Trip. The Chinese Language Immersion Camp was held at the

Jenks East Intermediate campus from May 26 to June 8. One hundred students participated in Chinese language, culture, art and physical education activities. Examples of activities include learning about the Chinese tea ceremony, learning how to use a Chinese yo-yo (see photo), calligraphy and origami. To continually increase fluency, all communication during the Immersion Camp was in Chinese. At the conclusion of the camp, students celebrated with their parents and teachers by sharing highlights of the camp and enjoying a chinese lunch. During the same time period, twenty-two Sino-Academy students, along with parents and teachers, travelled in two groups to different locations in China. One group flew into Beijing while the other group flew into Shanghai. Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, the Temple of Heaven, the Great Wall of China and a school for the arts called Children’s Palace were a few of the many places that the Bejing group had the opportunity to visit. The Shanghai group visited the Shanghai Museum, Jade Buddha Temple, a Urban Planning Exhibition and Suzhou gardens. During the trip students kept a daily travel journal as well as having daily opportunities to communicate in Chinese, using what they have been learning over the past school year. Students who made the trip to China were also expected to produce and share a product to document their Chinese experience. This was the first year for both of these opportunities and because of the success of both, they will be repeated at the end of the 2011-2012 school year.
