Mascots are an established part of the identity of sports teams, often becoming as much a part of a team’s moniker as the place where the team is located. After all, it’s just as common to hear “The Broncos are playing the Chiefs on Sunday” as it is to hear “Denver’s playing Kansas City”, right? There’s also no doubt that mascots serve a purpose from creating a brand for the team to unifying the fans to cheering the team on (and intimidating the opponent) with chants and cheers.
While mascots are usually assumed to have been around forever and to have originated in the United States, as it turns out, neither assumption is exactly correct. The word “mascot” can be traced to 19th cen-tury France where it’s derived from the French word “mascoto”, meaning “witch, fairy or sorcerer”. In the 1860s, this word gave rise to the slang word “mascot-tee”, meaning “talisman” or “sorcerer’s charm”. It was typically used in gambling, in hopes that a “mascottee” was there to bring luck to the gambler. The word be-came part of the English vernacular when, in 1881, a French play named “La Mascotte” became popular in the US.
It’s difficult to nail down who came up with the idea of having a mascot in sports, but there’s an accepted the-ory that the word “mascottee” was first used in Amer-ican baseball in the 1880s. According to The Dickson Baseball Dictionary, its first use was in an 1883 issue of The Sporting Life about a boy named “Chic” who was considered a good luck charm by the players on the baseball team where Chic was a batboy and errand runner. As The Sporting Life phrased it, “the players pin their faith to Chic’s luck-bringing qualities.” Rough-ly 35 years later, the first pro team to use a mascot was the Chicago Cubs who opened their season by bringing their mascot—a taxidermy bear—on to the field. From then on, they brought the bear to each of their games, including those on the road. At some point, they start-ed using a live bear cub, despite the practice causing a number of problems, for the poor little bear cub, most of all.
Regardless of the origin of mascots, the choice of which mascot to choose often has something to do with the characteristics of the mascot itself. With that in mind, what follows is a description of the charac-teristics for those mascots used by high schools in this corner of the world.
EAGLESThe size and power of the eagle have caused this bird of prey to be seen as the “king” of the birds and a symbol of rulers and gods for thousands of years. The Romans made the eagle the companion of Zeus, and some of the plains tribes of Native Americans view them as earthly incarnations of the great Thunderbird spirit. The bald eagle has a wingspan of 8 feet, and eagles can fly higher than any other bird—up to an altitude of 10,000 feet. They also have extraordinary vision, allowing them to spot a rabbit from up to two miles away or a fish swimming several feet under the surface of water from several hundred feet overhead. They also hold the record for carrying the largest load known to have been carried by a flying bird when an eagle was seen carrying a 15 pound mule deer fawn. They typically nest in the mountains and return to the same nest every year.
TIGERSTigers are the largest wild cats in the world with adults weighing up to 660 pounds and being 10 feet in length, including their tails, which are about three feet long. A tiger’s tail helps them keep their balance when they’re making tight turns. Their hind legs are longer than their front, which allows them to leap vertically as high as 16 feet and to leap forward 20 to 30 feet in one jump. They also have large, padded feet which al-lows them to silently stalk their prey. The markings on their forehead resemble the Chinese symbol for “king”, which gives them regal status among animals. Tigers don’t roar at other animals; that would destroy the el-ement of surprise. Instead, they roar to communicate with other tigers who are far away. They can also imi-tate the calls of other animals, a technique they use to attract their prey. Once they decide to attack, they do so by pouncing on their prey with a bite to the neck or back of the prey; however, they can also kill by swatting with their paws with such strength that it can break a bear’s skull. Tigers are completely striped—including their skin—which helps camouflage them in tall grass. Also, each tiger’s stripes are unique, like human finger-prints. Unlike most big cats, tigers have been known to swim great distances to hunt or to travel. They have ex-traordinary memories; their short term memory is 30 times longer than humans and, because of their stron-ger synapses, they can remember more and for longer
periods than people, as well. Their night vision is also six times better than people. Tigers will also wait for females and cubs to eat first and do not fight each other for food but will, instead, wait for each other to eat.
BOBCATSBobcats, which are the smallest members of the lynx family, are named for their short or “bobbed” tail. They’re most active at dawn and dusk. Each night, bobcats will travel along a habitual, established route which, for males, can be as large as 30 square miles. Like cats in general, they are very territorial and soli-tary and typically prey on smaller animals like rabbits, birds and small game. But don’t be fooled; male bob-cats, who are usually around 3 feet long and weigh 30-40 pounds, also have the capacity to successfully take on animals that weigh up to 8 times their own weight. They’re stealthy hunters and usually attack by pounc-ing on their prey with the potential to leap up to 9 feet in length and 12 feet in height. Once they get close enough, they can also chase down their prey with the ability to run 35mph for short periods of time.
WILDCATSWildcats are ancestors of domestic cats and can range in size from 29 to 46 inches in length and weigh up to 18 pounds. They adapt to a multitude of environments and inhabit forests, wooded grasslands, semi-arid ar-eas like deserts, areas near marshes, alpine meadows, savannahs and steppes. Like other cats, they have good eyesight and hearing, are very solitary, can climb with agility (although they live on the ground) and frequent-ly hunt at night. They can reach speeds up to 30mph, which can be maintained for surprisingly long distanc-es. They’re extremely territorial and will become very aggressive during mating season, often fighting other wildcats before getting an opportunity to mate. Kittens, who are blind until they’re two weeks old, are taught to hunt by their mothers who will bring live animals into the den. At the age of 3 months, they’ll accompany their mothers on the hunt; at 5 months, they can live and hunt independently but will not mate until they’re around 11 months old.
CARDINALSCardinals are so well loved that they are the official bird for no less than 7 states. These birs are easily iden-tified, largely because of the bright red color of the males. In fact, cardinals were named precisely for the males’ red plumage, which resembles a Catholic car-dinal’s red vestments. Cardinals don’t migrate—they largely stay within the same area year round—and male cardinals are the defenders of their territory. It’s a job they’re notorious for doing very well. They are also capable of creating beautiful songs; both male and female cardinals can sing, which is a rare treat among songbirds. They will typically be found in large flocks of
70 to 80 birds, even including different types of birds. However, they also pair off during mating season with the same female cardinal each year. The male cardinal then provides food to the female while she’s hatching their eggs.
HAWKSHawks are considered by many to be the most intelli-gent of all birds. They’re exceptional hunters with hook shaped beaks and extremely sharp talons for tearing apart their prey. Their feet are also covered with scales. Like eagles, hawks can see prey from a significant dis-tance and will reach speeds of 120 mph or greater when they sweep down on their prey, an ability that often allows them to attack without warning. Their vi-sion, which is 8 times greater than the vision of human beings, is helped by their eyes which are located on either side of their head, thus providing them a 280 degrees view of the scene around them. Similar to ea-gles, hawks can locate prey even as far as two miles away. Having 4 different types of color receptors in their eyes enables them to see in color. They can even see ultraviolet rays which can’t be detected by humans. Hawks also live in pairs and mate for life. However, if one of the pair dies, the surviving spouse immediately looks for a new mate. These birds are also extremely “clean” with nests that are meticulous. It’s thought this is done to keep to keep potentially harmful microbes away from their eggs and babies.
PANTHERSPanthers are one of the most elusive of the wild ani-mals, largely because their color makes them difficult to see at night. They’re the fifth largest species of cat with very large skull and long body but proportionately short legs. Their large skull results in panthers having very strong jaws. Panthers frequently hang out in trees and will hunt from there, using the branches for cam-ouflage until they pounce on their prey. Like other large cats, they’re very agile with the ability to leap up to 20 feet to catch their food. They also have a keen sense of hearing and extremely good eye sight with firm claws to hold their prey. They’re great swimmers and will dive into water to relax; they’re equally great climbers with the ability to carry their heavy prey far into the trees where they devour the food. Despite shorter legs, they can run up to around 36 mph and keep up that speed for enough distance to often catch their prey. Although they prefer to be solitary animals, they will often come close for mating. Panther cubs are really fast learners, often able to catch small prey by the age of six to nine months, becoming expert hunters by the age of two.
Given the broad range of animals and their varied strengths and characteristics, it’s no wonder that each of these mascots have become firmly entrenched in the branding of high school sports in southeast Colorado.
