EVENING

Page 2: Oulder Hill Winter 2019 Connect · On Friday 18th October, 44 History students from Years 10 and 11 went to Whitechapel, London to visit the Jack the Ripper museum and do a walking

On Friday 18th October, 44 History students from Years 10 and 11 went to Whitechapel, London to visit the Jack the Ripper museum and do a walking tour of the area. This forms part of GCSE Paper 1 which is a study into the historic environment of Whitechapel. The students had a guided tour of Whitechapel which was tailored towards the exam board syllabus then visited the Jack the Ripper Museum on Cable Street. We were also lucky enough to do a walking tour of some of the sites of London – some of which feature in our Paper 2 on Early Elizabethan England. We saw the Tower of London, Tower Bridge, the Golden Hind (Francis Drake’s ship), the Globe Theatre and St Paul’s Cathedral. The students behaved impeccably as ever and gained a lot of knowledge from this trip which will support them in their GCSE exams.

The Autumn term is always particularly busy for us at school as we remember the Armistice to end the First World War on 11th November and we have been privileged to take part in numerous events – at school, locally, nationally and even internationally!

Battlefields TourOn Friday 8th November, 5 students – Zara Shaukat, Lucy Greaves, Tom Ratu, Kenzie McCann and Fatimah Latif along with Mrs Tarran participated in a battlefields trip to France and Belgium, organised by the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme and UCL.

They visited museums, cemeteries and battlefields around Ypres in Belgium and along the Somme in France. They were given enquiries to investigate and paid respects at the graves of over 15 Rochdale soldiers whose lives are commemorated on our legacy poppy map in the pupil entrance. The students also watched a performance of the play “A Journey’s End” and paid their respects at 11:00 on 11th November at a military cemetery in Villers-Bretonneux in France. Fatimah was also selected to lay a wreath at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate on behalf of all the Manchester schools who participated on the trip – a huge honour.

Jonathan Ali Conference on social cohesion in the Manchester communityAs a follow up, the students attended a post-tour reflection day – The Jonathan Ali Conference – at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday 21st November. They participated in workshops regarding social cohesion, remembrance and lessons from the Holocaust. They also liaised with two ranking officers from the British Army and now have plenty of ideas for their legacy project – a memory garden at Oulder Hill – a place where we can remember key events in History and where our students can receive bereavement counselling. We look forward to seeing the completed memory garden.

Remembrance Day – 11th November - London, Rochdale, Oulder Hill We were privileged to be invited to attend several remembrance events on 10th and 11th November.

Bailey Boyd-Aust and Sarah Gore (Head Boy and Girl) attended the Remembrance Ceremony at Rochdale Cenotaph on Sunday 10th November where they laid a wreath on behalf of the staff, students and governors of Oulder Hill.

On Monday 11th November, we were very honoured to be invited to attend the Remembrance Parade and Ceremony at the Cenotaph on Whitehall in London and lay a bespoke wreath at the Cenotaph – which had been beautifully created by Mrs McCarry and Miss Clarke. We had been nominated by Simon Bendry – Programme Director of the First World War Centenary Battlefield Tours Programme and invited by the Western Front Association. Bailey Boyd-Aust, Sarah Gore, Jake Idiens and Jenna Holt all travelled to London, accompanied by Miss Clarke and Mr Armitage. They were an absolute credit to the school and to Rochdale.

In school, the History Ambassadors – Ali Riaz and Henna Azhar – along with Deputy Head Boy and Girl – Alfie Naylor and Emily Sandison, laid a wreath at 11:00 below the legacy map as two buglers played the Last Post. They then accompanied Mr Watson to another remembrance ceremony at Rochdale Cemetery which was attended by the Mayor of Rochdale, the Royal British Legion and councillors and dignitaries.

OULDER HILL REMEMBERS

Thank you to everyone who bought a poppy and who remembered those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Oulder Hill Remembers.

Whitechapel trip

Our group of GCSE Music students visited the Bridgewater Hall to watch the Halle Orchestra.

Once again our pupils demonstrated exemplary behaviour, with quite a few of the public stopping to chat to them. Each time we go, we are always stopped by people who comment on how well-mannered and respectful they are. None more so than a gentleman who stopped me to say that he recognised us from our last visit, for all the good reasons!

The group were captivated by the performance.

At the end of last year we sent off some students work for a national writing competition and we have had some of the work selected for publication. Out of 18 pieces sent off, 16 were selected - overall, there were 18,000 entries!! Congratulations to the students involved:

• Hollie Bamford Y9• Rachel Ashworth Y9• Josh Ashton Y9• Katie Bull Y9• Ali Rehman Y8• Musa Raza Y9• Laiba Kashif Y9• Annabelle Turner Y8• Poppy Hunt Y8• Harrison Massey Y8• Libby Cowen Y8• Naa’ll Ansari Y8• Sumiya Ashraf Y8• Jenna Ashworth Y9• Laraib Ahman Y9• Sameer Mahood Y9

This year we held our annual LRC Halloween Party. Students were expected to dress up and they didn’t disappoint.

The party was based in the School’s LRC where we had tales of horror, scary bingo and trick or treat where all students were daring enough to try the lucky dip game.

Halloween treats and drinks were provided and with time running out, costumes were judged and prizes awarded.

In October we took a group of students to Milan in Italy. The trip was successful and students really enjoyed themselves, learning a lot about Italian culture. Duomo di Milano Cathedral and Teatro Alla Scala, Opera House Theatre, were among the many places of interest.

GIRLS FOOTBALL

Year 8 Girls Football SuccessOur year 8 girls competed in a Football competition at the Soccer Factory hosted by Rochdale AFC. The winner of this competition would then go on to represent Rochdale in the next round in Huddersfield and then have the chance of eventually playing at Wembley.

After 4 gruelling matches in which our girls showed amazing teamwork and effort, we came out on top! Our outstanding girls scored an unbelievable 22 goals and only conceded 1. This event sees us through to the next round in which we will be representing the whole of Rochdale against teams from: Barnsley, Bradford, Bury, Leeds, Middlesbrough, Oldham, Salford and Sunderland.

The following pupils who will also be receiving a certificate in assembly: • Maddison Hernon • Evie Collins• Jamie-leigh Dermody • Esme Mills• Lucy Bennett • Scarlett Smith

Special mention to Scarlett Smith who played the year higher with her only being in year 7 and performed amazingly!

BASKETBALL Year 11 Basket Ball Team

The Yr 11 basketball team competed in the initial group stages of the Rochdale Schools’ Basketball Competition. The boys played magnificently well against some very strong teams from Mathew Moss, St Anne’s and Middleton Technology School. They were extremely unlucky not to win in the first game and ended up drawing 4-4 against last year`s champions Middleton Technology School. In the second match they were up against St.Anne`s Academy and Oulder Hill won 4-2 with baskets coming from Sam Chadderton and Umar Azeem. In the third game Oulder Hill were beaten 6-4 by Mathew Moss and were very unlucky with a number of decisions going against them.

The team performed extremely well and should be proud of their overall performance.

Player of the tournament goes to Sam Chadderton for performing under pressure (He scored 2 free throws).

Team as follows:• Corie Shaw • Paulo Alfonso • Daniel King• Fernando Teca • Haris Bowden • Umar Azeem• Sam Chadderton • Ahmad Mujtaba• Dhanyal Zamir
