The world’smost productive whisker-reinforced ceramic inserts

WG-300® WG-600®

Special Geometries

WG-300 ® and WG-600 ®

Summary Previous to applying WG-300 ®, the roughing cycleusing a competitor’s ceramic tool took 20 minutes and used twocutting edges. WG-300 ® reduced the cycle time to 6 minutesusing only one cutting edge. A 66% reduction in cycle time plus reduced tool consumption!

WG-300® & WG-600®

the world’s most productive whisker-reinforcedceramic insertsWG-300® whisker-reinforced ceramic inserts are extremely successful at machining hard materials such as hard steels andnickel- and cobalt-based super alloys, and offer excellent wearand shock resistance at high surface speeds. In fact, WG-300®

is capable of operating up to 10 times the speed used foruncoated carbide tools!

What is WG-300®?WG-300®, developed by Greenleaf Corporation, is the first commercially available ceramic composite using the technologyof whisker reinforcement. The basic concept of whisker rein-forcement involves strengthening a hard ceramic matrix withexceptionally strong, stiff, silicon-carbide crystals, commonlycalled whiskers. These whiskers are grown under carefully controlled conditions and, due to their high purity and lack ofgrain boundaries, approach the theoretical maximum strengthobtainable. This strength is calculated to be in the order of 1 million psi (6,900 MPa) tensile!

The super-strong whiskers are then dispersed into a matrix of fine-grained aluminum oxide where they act much like glassfilaments do in fiberglass, for example, by adding tensile strengthand improving the fracture toughness of the ceramic matrix.

What is WG-600®?WG-600® is the only commercially available coated whisker-reinforced ceramic cutting tool. Greenleaf’s proprietary coatinggives WG-600® the advantage of offering 2-3 times longer toollife over uncoated whiskered ceramics. WG-600® excels atmachining high-strength alloy materials, hardened steels andother difficult to cut materials; and, it is particularly well suitedfor demanding applications in which extended tool life is critical.

Why choose WG-300® and WG-600®?WG-300® and WG-600® can outperform carbide and SiliconNitride-based ceramics in heat-resistant alloys, hard steels, weld overlays and 400-series stainless steels. WG-300® and WG-600® have outstanding thermal and mechanical shockresistance making it the grade of choice for intermittent cutapplications, such as milling. Grooving and turning applicationscan also benefit from using WG-300® and WG-600® by reducingcycle time and extending tool life.
