Hi you all!

Welcome to read this spare time themed issue, number 5. This time the magazine is more or less about sports, hobbies, outdoors and nature in Ostrobothnia. We hope to serve you nice tips or even motivate you to start a new hobby.

Something new is also served, and this time it is bread cheese! In a new recipe corner you will be introduced traditional Ostrobotnhian recipes.

After making this magazine, we will step back and give some time to planning and developing the future magazine. It is about deciding where we should go next. We are still looking for new active writers and photographers, and most important, we would like to get your developing ideas. If you want to take part of the magazine?s (developing) team, do not hesitate to contact us.

I got my first own fishing gears on my 7th birthday. It was spinning rod, reel and some lures. Before that I had been fishing with my dad?s equipment, mostly just fishing with worm. Most of times I went fishing with my dad, like most of the kids in this area. Sometimes we went fishing with friends to lakes nearby, but? ? going to fish with dad and uncles - it was like a lifestyle. Before starting it took couple of hours to get everything ready, adults were preparing stuff: getting flies ready, checking lures and reels, talking about where to go, what river would be good in this time of year with this water. For me as a child it was? ?Come on, let?s go fishing?. Now when you think of that? Trip started on that moment and

there is a lot of good memories just preparing equipment just before leaving to river. Years went by, my dad died when I was 11 years old. Luckily I have uncles and we kept fishing on. I got my own car and that was making fishing more easily, now I had my own ride. My style of fishing was spinning. I knew about fly fishing but I didn?t know anyone who was fishing like that. It was in the beginning of 1990?s, there was no Google to ask about it? .

I think it was around 1998 when I decided that I will try fly fishing. I went on fishing shop and bought gears. I started to read about fly fishing and learned everything by myself. I can tell you it is a long way to the

top if you want to do it that way. For me it was only chance. Internet was coming also and you could find something from there. There were some articles about gillies, fishing guides? . I started to think that, it would be nice to be fishing guide, you could fish and somebody would pay for you to do that. Well that is not how it is going but? ..

In 2008 I moved to Kuusamo, yes there is a girl involved but that one is totally another story even it also is a fishing story. And over time I got a chance to be a fishing guide. The girl I mentioned was owning Palosaari?s reindeer and fishing farm ? a family company which is offering fishing services. I had been fishing in Kuusamo area since

1999 but now it was time to turn a page. I started to study in 2010 to be authorized fishing guide and I gratuated in 2011. Since that my hobby has been my ?work?, but let?s go back to fishing.

For me fishing is not a hobby, it is passion, it is lifestyle, it?s a way of enjoying nature. Fishing is a social event, especially in Kuusamo area where trout fishing is similar as salmon fishing in the rivers. We have a circuit where everybody has their own fishing turn and when you are waiting for your turn, you just sit by the fire and talk with other fishermen. You tell your stories and listen to others. Those stories are mostly about fishes which were lost or released. There are a lot of fishermen who release for example female trout and take only males. There is a good reason for that kind of selection. The females are carrying eggs which are

more precious than males milk (small males can do same job than big ones, but small females can?t do the same than big females). Nowadays I?m mostly sitting by the fire telling stories and watching that clients are fishing good places and helping them to catch fishes. I feel happiness when I see that clients got their first something or biggest something, mostly those fishes go back on the river so the same fish can be someone else?s first or biggest.

For me it is really difficult to write about fishing that I could explain what it is. But close your eyes and imagine that you are sitting by the river with open fire, can you here running water and some noise from the fire. Look in the sky, only light is coming from the fire and you can see thousands of stars on the sky, if lucky also northern lights. You taste coffee from your kuksa. You

take your fishing rod and go to make your run. Maybe on this run your dream comes true with a silver beauty, if not, there is always next run and next summer.

At its simplest level, geocaching requires these 8 steps:

1. Register for a free Basic Membership.

2. Visit the "Hide & Seek a Cache" page.

3. Enter your postal code and click "search."

4. Choose any geocache from the list and click on its name.

5. Enter the coordinates of the geocache into your GPS Device.

6. Use your GPS device to assist you in f inding the hidden geocache.

7. Sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.

8. Share your geocaching stories and photos online.

Geocachi ng Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor

treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Geocaches can be found all over the world. It is common for geocachers to hide caches in locations that are important to them, reflecting a special interest or skill of the cache owner. These locations can be quite diverse. They may be at your local park, at the end of a long hike, underwater or on the side of a city street.

History of Geocaching

On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the great blue switch* controlling selective availability was pressed.

Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.

The announcement a day before came as a welcome surprise to everyone who worked with GPS technology. The government had planned to remove selective availability - but had until 2006 to do so. Now, said the White House, anyone could "precisely pinpoint their location or the location of items (such as game) left behind for later recovery." How right they were.

London, Paris, New York, Beavercreek?

For GPS enthusiasts, this was definitely a cause for celebration. Internet newsgroups suddenly teemed with ideas about how the technology could be used.

Within three days, two different readers read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container, and shared their experiences online. Throughout the next week, others excited by the prospect of hiding and finding stashes began hiding their own containers and posting coordinates. Like many new and innovative ideas on the Internet, the concept spread quickly - but this one required leaving your computer to participate.

Within the first month, Mike Teague, the first person to find Ulmer's stash, began gathering the online posts of coordinates around the world and documenting them on his personal home page. The "GPS Stash Hunt" mailing list was created to discuss the emerging activity. Names were even tossed about to replace the name "stash" due to the negative connotations

On May 3, one such enthusiast, Dave Ulmer, a computer consultant, wanted to test the accuracy by hiding a navigational target in the woods. He called the idea the "Great American GPS Stash Hunt" and posted it in an internet GPS users' group. The idea was simple: Hide a container out in the woods and note the coordinates with a GPS unit.

The finder would then have to locate the container with only the use of his or her GPS receiver. The rules for the finder were simple: "Take some stuff, leave some stuff."

On May 3rd he placed his own container, a black bucket, in the woods near Beavercreek, Oregon, near Portland. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav:

of that name. One such name was "geocaching."

What are the rules of geocaching?

1. If you take something from the geocache (or "cache"), leave something of equal or greater value.

2. Write about your find in the cache logbook.

3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com.

What do I need to go geocaching?

The only necessities are a GPS device or a GPS-enabled mobile phone so that you can navigate to the cache, and a Geocaching.com Membership.

Ostrobothnian Bread Cheese - LeipäjuustoMatt Stauffer

3 l whole milk

4 dl powdered milk

2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon cheese rennet

Warm milk (about 35 degrees). Add and beat up the powdered milk, add salt and cheese rennet. Let the mixture stay on a warm place until the milk has clot (about 10

minutes).

Break the mixture with a scoop or a wooden fork slashing it crisscross. Let the milk stay on a warm place until the whey comes up.

Lift the cheese with a scoop in small sets to a strainer (round shaped bottom) lined with a gauze and push gently the whey away. Put the

strainer to a deep bowl which collects the water, and let it drain in fridge over the night.

Reverse the cheese from the strainer and fry in a grill or in oven for 3-4 minutes until the cheese gets brown dots.

Serve bread cheese with cloudberry jam, or if you dare, try devil?s jam!

RECIPE

Samba el Gambo is a samba school in Kokkola. The samba school was founded in 1998 in Fredericia, Denmark. The Kokkola based band Ykspihlajan Työväen Soittajat were performing in Fredericia and after the gig some of the guys in the band realized they both had played samba in different samba schools before they joined Ykspihlajan Työväen Soittajat. The name el Gambo came from a bottle of wine ? which perhaps gave the samba enthusiasts some inspiration.

After returning from Denmark, the sambistas decided to form a samba school in Kokkola. The school has had their 'quadra' in Niittykatu 1, Kokkola since 1999. Samba el Gambo is a registered association and it's managed by it's board. Dance classes in Brazilian style carnaval samba and samba-reggae are held weekly and samba percussion classes are held as weekend courses. As the tradition is in Brazil, the classes are held by more experienced sambistas, not professional dance teachers or professional musicians.

Samba ? A Hobby for the Whole Family

The dance classes start from children's samba classes with groups for 4-6 year old's and 7-12 year old's groups. For adults there are Basic 1 class, Basic 2 class (usually after one year in Basic 1) and Advanced class in carnaval samba dancing. This year there is also 'Condition Samba' class that focuses more on getting in shape with samba-reggae dancing. The groups are for both boys and girls and men and women. Bateria percussion classes are for everybody, children and adults. Small children can also participate, but preferably with a parent or other adult. There is no maximum age for joining in the classes ? it's fun when there are people from a wide age range!

The classes are held usually in Finnish, but teaching can be arranged in Swedish and English if you contact us beforehand, so the teacher knows to be prepared. All classes and contact information can be found on our website www.samba-el-gambo.com

In the samba school tradition there are also Samba School Nights with theme parties and just sambistas getting to know each other and hanging out. Usually there is program for children in the beginning of the evening as well.

Helsinki Samba Carnaval

The main event for Finnish sambistas is The Helsinki Samba Carnaval. Every year in June Finnish Samba Schools have a street carnaval in the heart of Helsinki. The carnaval is not just a street party, it also determines which school is The Finnish Champion of Brazilian Samba. Currently there are 7 samba schools in Finland. Samba el Gambo made it's debut in Helsinki Samba Carnaval in 2001 and since then the sambistas from Kokkola have participated almost every year with a competing carnaval parade. Finnish samba schools form The Association of Samba Schools in Finland (ASSF) and arrange the street carnaval together. More information about ASSF can be found at www.samba.fi

For the carnaval the sambistas make a story, a carnaval samba song in Finnish, costumes and floats. The planning for the next carnaval starts in the fall, usually the theme and story is selected in October. After that the planning starts

and the samba song is recorded around February. After that the costumes and choreographies are made and in April and May there are rehearsals for the parade. All costumes are made by the sambistas themselves. Materials are bought from all over the world. Thanks to the Internet, for example buying ostrich feathers and rooster feathers is easier. Silver and gold dance shoes are usually imported by other Finnish sambistas ? from Rio de Janeiro, of course!

Samba is all about having fun. The latin groove takes you away and whisks your mind into a beach in Rio De Janeiro, even though you are really freezing your butt off in the middle of Finnish winter. The first dance lesson is free, so please come and try it out!
