CATHOLIC POSTAGE STAMPS OF THE WORLDThe plan or layout under subject headings of this fifth edition
of the list of stamps of Catholic interest is the same as in previous
editions. Scott illustration numbers have been used in all but a
few Instances as less likely to be changed than the individual stampnumbers, so that even the beginner can readily determine from the
catalog which stamp carries the illustration and how many there
are of any particular issue.
Countries are arranged in alphabetical order, in preference to
that by possession, for easier reference, as only the advancedhistorian can readily recall in many cases which country belongs
to which in this changing world. Illustration numbers for colonies
have been omitted where the illustration is essentially the same as
for the mother country or the illustration varies only due to over-
print, surcharge or country title.
Churches and similar institutions that were formerly Catholic
have been designated with an asterisk. Some few listed in formereditions, particularly of the Balkan area, have been omitted as
being too remote in interest for the average collector.
The list under Biographical should undoubtedly be much larger,
particylarly for the South and Central American Countries, but
the available encyclopedias give but meager details at best, andrarely any mention of the individuals, religious affiliations or his
devotion thereto.
Crosses and Crucifix designs have been listed in so far as they
seem to appear with a religious connotation, rather than merely
because they are part of an emblem, coat of arms, etc. The
collector is, of course, free to add or delete, as the list is intended
as a suggestive aid to those interested in items of Catholic
significance.
Space does not permit the naming of, or the rendering of
adequate thanks to collectors, both clerical and lay, organizations
and publications, for the many previous suggestions and historical
references to designs that otherwise would have been overlooked.
May they find satisfaction for their efforts in the spread of the
hobby and the increased religious interest of other collectors to
whom the list has been of benefit.
