Your Mother Is Always With You

Your mother is always with you

She's the whisper of the leaves

as you walk down the street

    She's the smell of bleach

    in your freshly laundered socks.

She's the cool hand on your brow

    when you're not well.

Your mother lives inside your laughter

She's crystallized in every tear drop

She's the place you came from

    your first home

    She's the map you follow

with every step that you take

    She's your first love

    and your first heart break

and nothing on earth can separate you

    Not time, Not space

    Not even death

    will ever separate you

    from your mother

You carry her inside of you

The Wager, by Donna Jo Napoli. Her story is based off an old Sicilian fairy tale, Don Giovanni De La Fortuna. Giovanni is a very rich, very handsome aristocrat from Messina, Italy. A tsunami strikes the Messina coast wiping out most of the town, along with Giovanni’s sheep and crops. He soon finds out that he was not as rich as he thought he was. He ends up begging throughout the Italian countryside, when he runs into the devil.

The devil gives Giovanni a magical purse. All he has to do is whisper an amount and the purse will produce all the gold coins he wants. BUT Giovanni has to agree not to bathe for three years, three months, and three days. YUCK! At the time it sounded like a good idea. If Giovanni fails, the devil gets his soul. The ending could go either way, which keeps you read-ing. Recommended for teens and adults.

Splendors and Glooms, by Laura Amy Schlitz. Marionettes can be a little creepy when they are hanging around in a darkened room waiting to be used. The story gets creepier when one of those puppets turns out to be a real girl. Gaspare Grisini, a magician and Cassandra, a witch, battle over a magical stone. Grisini’s young assis-tants, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall, are the only ones who can save their friend Clara from a life on strings. That means getting their hands on the stone. This Book is a Newbery Medal Winner. Recommended for teens and adults.
