On the Cover – Grant Union JRSR High School is located in John Day, Oregon, a small town of about 2,000 people in Grant County. John Day is located at the heart of Eastern Oregon, surrounded by grassy fields, rivers, and tall mountain ranges. Grant School District 3 services about 580 students in three schools: Humbolt Elementary (K-6), Seneca School (K-6), and GUHS (7-12). GUHS prides itself on comprehensive curriculum and student involvement in extracurricular activities and clubs, with over 80 percent of students participating in clubs and athletic activities.

President’s Message

ThE wiNTER EDiTiON OF OFSMa news always gives us an opportunity to highlight

the upcoming conference, which will be held on april 15-17 at the Linn County Fair and

Expo Center in albany. I sat in on a Conference Committee meeting a few days ago, and

I can assure you that your colleagues who serve in that group are once again planning

a terrific event packed with educational sessions covering many topical issues. the

conference program is published in this issue, so please take a few minutes to check

out the workshops – I’m sure you’ll find some that will be of interest to you. as usual,

we expect more than 100 vendors to be on hand thursday to display their latest and

greatest products and services. the food will be great, the company stimulating – please

come and join us!

In the school facilities arena, we all work hard to serve our clients – students, families,

faculty – to the best of our abilities. to be sure that we are deploying our resources in the

way that best supports their needs, we need their feedback. and the best way to get that

feedback is to make a habit of asking for it. no matter how good we are at anticipating

needs, the feedback we get from our communities is always valuable in helping us

improve what we do.

Similarly, the OSFMa board wants our organization to be a resource for you – to

provide resources and support that help you to be more effective in your work. and so

we are making plans to ask you to let us know how OSFMa can best be of service to you.

the board has set aside extra time at our March meeting to talk about our mission as

an organization, to do some brainstorming about how and where OSFMa might best

focus its energies and resources. We will make a plan to gather feedback from all of you

in the coming months, with a particular emphasis on engaging you on this topic at the

conference. I encourage to spend some time thinking about this and to bring your best

ideas to share when we gather in april.

OSFMa has a long history of supporting school facility professionals in our state. We

aspire to do an even better job of it in the future! v

Who We Are...OSFMA iS AN ORgANizATiON of School Facilities Maintenance Professionals with the common goal of promoting and developing the highest degree of professionalism in the maintenance, operations, planning, development and construction of school facilities. Our association is managed by a Board of Directors, composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary/treasurer, and immediate Past President; and elected by a majority of our voting members. the Board also includes Directors from each of the five geographic zones, who are nominated by the members of said zones and also approved by the voting membership. there are several committees, with delegated responsibilities that oversee the following areas to give advice to the Board of Directors.

MEMbERShiP…Active Members: Oregon school and community college employees actively employed in a position of program level authority and or responsibility for Maintenance Services and Operations in an educational facility. Educational Associate Members: those persons regularly employed in a position of supervisory responsibility in the field on maintenance, operations and facility programs related to an educational institution. Non-Educational Associate Members: those persons regularly employed in a position of administrative, managerial, or supervisory responsibility in the fields of maintenance, operation, and facility programs not related to an education facility. Educational Partner Membership: Supplier, vendor, contractor representative, or other agency or association who offers or provides membership, products, goods or “services for a fee” to maintenance and operations departments in educational facilities.honorary Members: Honorary membership in this association may be extended to any person whom the association approves.Retired Members: Members in good standing may retain a non-voting membership in the association upon retirement.

OSFMA OFFERS PROFESSiONAL gROwTh CERTiFiCATiON…the Oregon School Facilities Management association provides

professional certification to qualifying members based on education, achievement, and experience. two certificate programs are available which are designed to demonstrate a high degree of professional competence and growth. Both growth paths, either the Certified School Facilities Manager or the Certified School Facilities Specialist, have three focus areas:

1. Participation in OSFMa. 2. Other professional growth activities. 3. Knowledge and skill gained through experiences.

ANNuAL CONFERENCE AND TRADE ShOw Each spring our association holds an annual conference in

In July 1986, 24 facilities managers from around the state discussed the formation of a new organization, with the objective to promote and foster the highest degree of professionalism in the maintenance operation of school facilities. the first annual conference was held in 1987 at the Chumaree Comfortel in Salem. nine workshops were presented, and Russell Sadler, noted newspaper columnist, was the speaker at the banquet dinner. ten vendors attended the first conference, displaying services and products. Over the years, the annual conferences were held in Springfield, Eugene, and currently in albany Oregon. the vendor trade show has grown from 84 booths in 1991 to over 120 in 2014. training workshops have grown from nine in 1986 to over 20 in 2014. v

OSFMA PROFESSIONAL GROWTH APPLICATION GUIDE

The Oregon School Facilities Management Association provides professional certification to qualifying members based on education, achievement, and experience. Two certificate programs are available which are designed to demonstrate a high degree of professional competence and growth. Both growth paths, either the Certified School Facilities Manager or the Certified School Facilities Specialist, have three focus areas:

1. Participation in OSFMA 2. Other professional growth activities 3. Knowledge and skill gained through experiences

While the topics within the areas are different, what is needed to demonstrate proficiency in each area is similar. Some topics you may have previously completed. There may be others that you will still need to accomplish. There is no time limit to follow for completing your certification program. Part I: Participation in OSFMA To be brief, if you want to be certified by OSFMA you need to be active in the organization.

Required Elements: Provide a page describing your activities in OSFMA while you have been a member. Be as specific as you can on the conferences you have attended and the workshops in which you participated. If you received certificates of attendance you may include copies. If you have items in this area yet to complete you can contact the Conference Committee Chair to find out how you can get involved. Do the same for Zone Meetings and other OSFMA activities. Elective Elements: From the list of topics you will need to complete a minimum of two. Here again you need to give dates and describe the activity that demonstrates the completion of each topic selected.

Part II: Other Professional Growth Activities You most likely have participated in a number of formal or informal growth and training opportunities to get the position you now hold. As a professional, it is important that you continue to take advantage of growth opportunities throughout the year.

Elective Elements: This area has three elements labeled I, II, Ill. You need to complete two of the three. Where individual items are listed below the element heading you must demonstrate completion of at least One. The lists are not intended to be all inclusive. You may submit other items that you feel will meet the requirements of the element.

Our expertise, targeted repairs, and sanitary jobsites allow us to perform work that is not invasive to the client, allowing them to go about their daily tasks as necessary. We make a clear effort to perform work in a non-intrusive manner and work around the client’s schedule, allowing businesses to remain open during regular working hours. this option is, of course, contingent on the size of the loss and repairs necessary.

Our effort toward clean, contained job sites makes it possible for us to perform work at commercial sites where cleanliness and safety are of utmost importance. this has resulted in our ability to provide services at schools, hospitals, and other facilities.

When a West Gresham Elementary school heating/air-conditioning unit had been leaking, our water intrusion experts were called out to complete the dry-down process. the water had soaked through the floor of the classroom, and into the ceiling tiles of both the music room, and computer lab that were positioned beneath. Our response services allowed us to properly track and dry the loss, leading to minimal necessary repairs during the put-back process. Our team was able to cover the unaffected areas which reduced any further losses. new ceiling tiles were installed in the affected areas, and small dry wall repairs were made where demolition occurred.

In another event, our crews were notified of water in an attic at Highland Elementary School when facilities maintenance staff went to use the attic for roof access. the water heater

in this area had been leaking for an undeterminable period of time. the emergency response team was able to begin immediate, same-day demolition and repairs. as the project progressed, large amounts of water were extracted. During our investigation, water was found in the ceiling of a teacher’s lounge below, as well as in electrical panels. the location of the water loss required that our crews access the work site via the roof. Drying mats, as seen below, were used to dry the attic floor, preventing the water from further migration.

have more academic success in learning environments where they are exposed to more natural light and are allowed to look outside and then refocus on their work. the SaGE classroom provides that environment.

With the constant exchange of fresh air and building materials with virtually no VOCs, these classrooms will keep the teachers and students healthy year round.

will use up to 50 percent less energy than an average modular classroom and has an expected lifespan of 50 to 60 years.
