This report contains the data -for Dioxin Case 5028. Thiscase was received at Versar on September 28, 1985. The sampleswere shipped to versar by Federal Express. The samples arrivedintact and are listed below:

There was a problem with the extraction of this case ofsamples. The problem is discussed in detail below. Once theproblem was corrected and the system back on track, the analysesproceeded smoothly.
The initial sample processing was started on October 22,1985. The initial extracts were analyzed on October 25,1985 andthe samples had low internal standard and surrogate recoveries.The column cleanup was suspected to be the cause. We analysedthe preeluant of the silica gel and alumina columns. There wasno recovery of material -from that. It was evident that thematerial was stuck on one o-f the columns. Some work was done toimprove the lab technicians column packing techniques and toassure the correct column activity. In addition the carbopackcolumn cleanup was omitted on the subsequent re—extraction.
The samples were re—extracted and reanalyzed and the re-extraction recoveries were good. Some of the samples were foundto have dioxin in them. Should you have questions or requireadditional information please call. We regret any inconveniencethe delays in reporting may have caused.
