Editorials allow reporters and editors to argue one side or another of a topic in the current news cycle. Journalists are supposed to be objective in their reporting, so the editorial column was designed to allow a subjective opinion.

The thing that distinguishes an editorial from a persuasive essay is the TIMELY NEWS ANGLE. This is where the importance of current events is most apparent, For this editorial, the Presidential Election is your timely news angle.

•Introduction is no more than 4 sentences.•The thesis is the last sentence of the introduction.•The body paragraphs are 3-4 sentences.•The conclusion is no more than 3 sentences.

Editorial writing is tighter than the traditional essay, so you must state your case clearly and succinctly.

•The editorial must include an objective explanation of the issue at hand. This gives the writer credibility.•Editorials should include and refute arguments from the opposing side.•Editorials should deliver the writer’s opinion in a professional manner.

Good editorials engage the reader with the issues. Attacking personalities, name-calling, and ridicule are not permitted in a good editorial. (No matter how tempting)

Editorials offer a solution to the problem being addressed. Anyone can complain, but a good editorial takes a pro-active approach to making the situation better.

Although short, the conclusion must resonate with the reason. It must be a powerful summary with some punch.

It must be in the THIRD person. (I already know it’s your opinion.)

It must reference Animal Farm.

It must be EXACTLY 500 words.
