One of the readings for October 5th offers us a chance to see how closely the prayers of the Divine Liturgy are based on the words of Scripture. The reading is Ephe- sians 3: 8-21. Like the rest of the letter to the Ephesians, these verses emphasize God's eternal plan to offer salvation and eternal life to every person. The Lord wants not only His chosen people, Israel, to find their way to the Kingdom, but the Gen- tiles as well. In fact, Paul begins the third chapter of the letter by referring to himself as "Paul, a prisoner for Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gen- tiles." In 3:8, the first verse of this day's reading, Paul describes himself as "the very least of all the saints." The same recogni- tion of personal unworthiness is reflected in the words of the Divine Liturgy. As the priest partakes of the bread and then the cup of Holy Communion, he says that the Most Holy Body and the Most Holy Blood of Jesus Christ are "given to me, the unworthy priest ......" and then inserts his own name. The Communion Prayer said by the congregation expresses a similar idea. Each per- son who is to receive the Eucharist con- fesses belief in Christ as the Son of the living God, who came into the world to save sinners, "of whom I am first" or "of whom I am chief." Some people won- der a little about these words. Do we really have to say that we are worse than everybody else? Surely there are people who have sinned more seriously than we have. But Paul's next words show us the true significance of these self-accusations. He writes that though he is the least of all the saints, "to me this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things." In other words, not only does God have a wonderful plan for us, but Paul has been given the grace to know the plan and to reveal it to others. The privilege of being given this grace is so over- whelming that Paul can only feel awe at its immensity and his unworthiness. In the prayers of the priest and the congregation receiving the Eucharist, the sense of privi- lege is the same. The priest and people are about to enter into the Mysteries of God Him- self. They are about to be given the precious Body and precious Blood that are foretastes of life everlasting, of heaven itself. For them, as for Sant Paul, the only possible response is awe at the immensity of such a gift. That is why each person saying the Communion Prayer asks God to "make me worthy" to receive such a gift--no human being is capable of earning it. Each one of us is the first among sinners, but God offers Himself to us anyway. Saint Paul shares our wonder at such generosity and grace. Message from Our Rector

PAGE 2 SS PETER & PAUL ORTHODOX CHURCH NEWSLETTER

Dear Brother and Sisters in Christ,

Someone recently asked me if send Christmascards and if I had yet ordered or purchasedthem. Although the question was asked withreally no other purpose than to make “smalltalk,” I thought it seemed odd thatone would be talking of sendingChristmas cards before the begin-ning of the month of October.Such a question, coupled with thefact that Christmas decorationsare already making their way tostore shelves, causes me to pauseand reflect upon the fact that wealways seem to be in such a hurry.In a hurry for the cooler weather toarrive. In a hurry to get throughthe week and into the weekend.In a hurry to complete this or that task. In ahurry for the holidays. And maybe even in ahurry to have the holidays done and over sothat we can get back to our normal, hurriedlives.

Approaching life with such a hurried and har-ried approach can cause us to miss out on thepresent, to fail to recognize the beauty of the

present moment, and all the “here and now”moments of life. And that is unfortunate, be-cause we have no real control over what tomor-row will bring and, as Scripture tells us, every-thing has its own appointed time. “There is anappointed time for everything, and a time for

every affair under the heav-ens…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). The LordJesus Himself reminds us of thefutility of worrying—and hurrying—when he speaks of the lilies of thefield in the Gospel of Saint Luke:“Consider the lilies, how they grow:they neither toil nor spin; and yet Isay to you, even Solomon in all hisglory was not arrayed like one ofthese. If then God so clothes thegrass, which today is in the fieldand tomorrow is thrown into the

oven, how much more will He clothe you, Oyou of little faith? And do not seek what youshould eat or what you should drink, nor havean anxious mind. For all these things the na-tions of the world seek after, and your Fatherknows that you need these things. But seekthe kingdom of God and all these things willbe added to you” (Luke 12:27-31).

Therefore, instead of worrying about the future,about Christmas cards or holiday preparationsor when the weather will be more pleasant, weshould live the present moment—for each mo-ment we live is a moment of grace, every mo-ment is a moment in which can draw closer tothe Lord and allow Him to enter more fully intoour hearts and lives. And if we live each mo-ment with our hearts centered in the Lord, thereis nothing for which we really need worry—forthe most important task is thus completed, thetask of being prepared for that moment—whenever it shall be and however it shall ar-rive—that the Lord will come and call us into thefullness of His kingdom. So, even though we allhave preoccupations about tomorrow and whatit might bring, let us live this moment, here andnow, seeking the kingdom of God with the con-fidence that the Lord will give us His grace inthe present moment and grant us the wisdom toseek Him above all other things.

With love in the Lord,

Father David

Comprehending the Gospel

PAGE 4 SS PETER & PAUL ORTHODOX CHURCH NEWSLETTER VOLUME 11, ISSUE 10

“Wisdom! Attend! Let us listen tothe Holy Gospel! Peace be with you

all!” (Divine Liturgy, preamble toreading of the Gospel)

Wisdom is the requirement not just to listen tothe gospel, the normal translation, nor to read itourselves at home or in the English translationprovided in those churches praying in otherlanguages, but to grasp the inner meaning. Theinner sense comes from wisdom [Sophia. Pre-mudrost.] Sophia means the deep things ofGod which we understand not just by reasonbut by preparing our souls to comprehend a“hidden wisdom which God ordained before theages for our glory.” And how do you gain thatgreat wisdom? By returning to the purity andinnocence of childhood. By cutting through thedrivel, the superficial veneer that has built upover the years of listening to banality, vulgarity,stupidity and nonsense that infects our hearingand pollutes our minds so that we not only donot hear any longer those truths about life andmeaning and purpose and direction, we havelong forgotten that such realities exist. Thesounds of the world have clogged up the arter-ies of the mind. The banalities, trivia and tru-isms have infected us so that we not longerhear as we had when we were children. Soeach time the gospel is read, we are warnedthat what is coming is not what you learn fromTV or read in a magazine. This is profoundwisdom. But even with this warning and invita-tion, it’s so difficult to change the way we tuneinto the world.

What is needed is a blessing. “Peace be withyou all.” The voice is my own as the celebrantat the Divine Liturgy for the Lord Jesus Christ,and I have no peace of my own to give you. I’mjust like you – maybe even a bit worse – yet Ihave the honor and duty to appear as the rep-resentative of Jesus who is here among us butcannot be here physically; He sent me to ap-pear on His behalf. With the mystery of wis-dom, then you can imagine through me Christis really here with us. With my hand He isblessing all of you the way He did the apostlesin the Upper Room on Resurrection day.

Once again, all this is hidden, possibly justnonsense, to those Christ called the “wise andprudent.” [Or learned]. Who are they? Godforbid they are you. They are those who live inan adults only world. They know everything, butthey know nothing about the ways of the Lord.

From the Fathers . . .

"Remember that the Lord is in every Chris-tian. When your neighbour comes to you,

always have great respect for him, be-cause the Lord is in him, and often ex-presses His will through him. ' It is God

which worketh in you both to will and todo of His good pleasure' (Phil. 2:13).

Therefore, do not grudge anything to yourbrother, but do unto him as unto the Lord;

especially as you do not know in whomthe Lord will come and visit you; be im-partial to all, be kind to all, sincere andhospitable. Remember that sometimes

God speaks even through unbelievers, ordisposes their hearts towards us, as it

happened in Egypt when the Lord gaveJoseph favour in the sight of the keeper of

the prison. (Gen. 39:21)."

St. John of Kronstadt

"Ever let mercy outweigh all else in you.Let our compassion be a mirror where we

may see in ourselves that likeness andthat true image which belong to the Di-vine nature and Divine essence. A hearthard and unmerciful will never be pure."

St. Isaac of Syria, Directions on SpiritualTraining

"God is a fire that warms and kindles theheart and inward parts. And so, if we feelin our hearts coldness, which is from thedevil, - for the devil is cold - then let us

call upon the Lord, and He will come andwarm our hearts with perfect love not

only for Him, but for our neighbor as well.And from the presence of warmth thecoldness of the hater of good will be

driven away."

St. Seraphim of Sarov

They are street smart. Shrewd and clever, theydon’t believe in anything or anyone, and theycall it wisdom. They live by axioms like:

a) All men are hypocrites no matter what theytell you;

b) They all have a price and can be bought andcontrolled – it’s just a matter of money;

c) Don’t trust anyone.

Yet Jesus said that “Many prophets and kingshave desired to see what you see and have notseen it, and hear what you hear and have notheard it” (Luke 10:24)

What did they want to hear?

A.That the Almighty Creator of heaven andearth is still concerned for the universe;

B.He is not to be feared, except if you are asinner and don’t know Him;

C. To His children, He is a Father;

D. To His special Son, He is a special Father;

E. He invites and welcomes all who wish to beadopted children through bonding with Christ;Note: You don’t adopt adults, of course; youonly adopt children. Therefore, to be a son ordaughter of the heavenly Father, you mustreturn to childhood, and to do so you will be-come what the world calls foolish.

F. For “The Father so loved the world that Hesent His Son into the world so that all whowould like to become united with the Father areencouraged to do so through the Son by theHoly Spirit.” (John 3:16)

Joy ofAllWho SorrowOctober 24 is the day of commemoration ofan icon given the name "Joy of All WhoSorrow." The center of the icon shows theMother of God with her arms outstretchedto the people who surroundher. They are those who suf-fer with various illnesses,worries, and pain of the heartor the body. They reach to-ward her, asking her prayersand intercession.This is one of the icons in whichthe Theotokos is shown fulllength and standing, rather thanholding her Son. He appearsabove her head, enthroned asthe King of heaven and earth. InHis left hand He holds the Bookof the Gospels, and with His right He blessesthe people—young, old, poor, rich—who arereaching out to His Mother. Flowers of Para-dise, and angels on either side of the Theoto-kos, remind us that both the heavenly and

earthly realms are part of the scene.Many stories of miracles and healings are as-sociated with the icon. One of the best-knownevents took place in Saint Petersburg, Russia

in 1888. Severe thunderstormshad struck the city and the sur-rounding area. A bolt of light-ning struck the chapel in whichthe icon was housed. The boltwas so powerful that it set theinterior walls on fire, burnedmost of the icons, and shatteredthe collection box. Only the iconof the Mother of God, the Joy ofAll Who Sorrow, was not ruinedor even affected. An ear-shattering clap of thunderknocked the icon to the floor,

and some copper coins which had been in thecollection box became permanently fused to it.But the image on the icon was intact.The news that this single icon had been sparedthe destruction of the chapel and its contents

spread through Saint Petersburg, and by eve-ning crowds of people had gathered to vener-ate it. It was not long before people begancoming from all over Russia, and as theyprayed before it, many were healed of dis-eases and injuries.It is easy to "put ourselves into" this icon, inwhich the Theotokos inclines her head slightlyto one side, so as to listen attentively to us aswe ask her to pray for us. One of the hymnsexpresses our request to her in this way:"Enlighten our hearts with devout purpose andraise your prayer to your Son for the salvationof our souls." She is the Mother who sees us,listens to us, understands, has compassion,and willingly asks her Son Jesus Christ to havemercy.

The Communion Prayer said by the congre-gation expresses a similar idea. Each personwho is to receive the Eucharist confessesbelief in Christ as the Son of the living God,who came into the world to save sinners, "ofwhom I am first" or "of whom I am chief."

Some people wonder a little about thesewords. Do we really haveto say that we are worsethan everybody else?Surely there are peoplewho have sinned moreseriously than we have.

But Paul's next words showus the true significance ofthese self-accusations.He writes that though heis the least of all the

One of the readings for October 5th offers usa chance to see how closely the prayers ofthe Divine Liturgy are based on the words ofScripture.

The reading is Ephesians 3: 8-21. Like therest of the letter to the Ephesians, theseverses emphasize God's eternal planto offer salvation and eternal life toevery person. The Lord wantsnot only His chosen people,Israel, to find their way tothe Kingdom, but the Gen-tiles as well. In fact, Paul be-gins the third chapter of the letter byreferring to himself as "Paul, a pris-oner for Christ Jesus on behalf of youGentiles."

In 3:8, the first verse of thisday's reading, Paul describes himself as "thevery least of all the saints." The same recog-nition of personal unworthiness is reflected inthe words of the Divine Liturgy. As the priestpartakes of the bread and then the cup ofHoly Communion, he says that the Most HolyBody and the Most Holy Blood of JesusChrist are "given to me, the unworthypriest ......" and then inserts his own name.

grace is so overwhelming that Paul can onlyfeel awe at its immensity and his unworthi-ness.

In the prayers of the priest and the congrega-tion receiving the Eucharist, the sense ofprivilege is the same. The priest and peopleare about to enter into the Mysteries of GodHimself. They are about to be given the pre-cious Body and precious Blood that are fore-tastes of life everlasting, of heaven itself. Forthem, as for Sant Paul, the only possibleresponse is awe at the immensity of such agift. That is why each person saying theCommunion Prayer asks God to "make meworthy" to receive such a gift--no humanbeing is capable of earning it.

Each one of us is the first among sinners, butGod offers Himself to us anyway. Saint Paulshares our wonder at such generosity andgrace.

Bits and PiecesTHANK YOU FOR YOUR KINDNESS!I would like to express my sincere thanks anddeep gratitude to our entire parish communityfor honoring (and surprising!) me on the occa-sion of the thirtieth anniversary of my ordinationto the Holy Priesthood. The wonderful meal,the shared memories, and the thoughtful giftsall added to the joy of the not-to-be-forgottencelebration. I was deeply touched by the manykind words and expressions of love and supportthat I received from all of you. This beautifuloccasion invited me to recall the words writtenby the Prophet David in the Book of Psalms:“Behold how good and how pleasant it is forbrethren to dwell together in unity!” (Psalm133:1). May the unity we share in Christ, theoneness of mind and heart that the Lord desiresfor us, continue to grow in our parish commu-nity—all to the glory of God and for the salva-tion of our souls. Again, please accept mygratitude. With love, Father David
