Our activities contribute to the sustainable development of delta areas,
coastal regions and river basins. We also devote a great deal of attention
and care to the environmental implications of our work. And so we strive
to minimise the ecological footprint of our business operations. We do
this in different ways. For example, our new office building (Tetra) in Delft
uses low amounts of energy and produces low levels of carbon emissions.
We have also introduced digital working methods, cutting back the use of
paper, and we introduced an environmental protection system in 2014.
We find corporate social responsibility to be entirely natural. A few related
highlights from 2014.

An Aquifer Thermal Energy System is a
sustainable method for heating buildings
in the winter and, to cool it down in the
summer. It also leads to a considerable
reduction in costs.

• We generate renewable energy using solar panels on our campus. Another 1100 were installed in 2014. That is the equivalent of energy for 130 households.
• We wanted to reduce paper consumption by 10%. Using a monitoring system for multifunctional printers, we were able to determine that consumption was actually reduced by 15%! This success was achieved because unconfirmed printing assignments are removed from the queue after 72 hours and because of the switch to digital working methods.
• We have started on the establishment of an environmental protection system. We identify environmental risks and record them in an environmental register. Working with that register allows us not only to clearly identify environmental risks, but also to set out the steps we take to reduce the environmental impact.
• We compensate for our plane travel by planting trees.
• We have installed an aquifer thermal energy system in our Tetra building. As a result, we can now make better use of stored heat so that we can reduce our dependence on energy sources involving gas and electricity.
• Sustainability is an important criterion in procurement. For example, our new furniture is made from sustainable and recyclable materials. The production machines used comply with the latest sustainability requirements and residual heat from the machines is recovered.
• Deltares cyclists participating in the ‘things work better on the bike’ plan cycled 33,655 kilometres last year. All that pedalling generated a nice sum for charity.
• By using our own herb garden, fair trade products and by reducing waste flows, we made the first step to establishing a company restaurant that supplies food in ways that are healthier and ecologically sound.
• We can monitor the internal climate and the consumption of gas, water and electricity better. As a result, we have a clearer picture of consumption patterns and we can prevent unnecessary consumption.
