Seed Napkin Rings Craft

Make a seed mosaic around cardboard tubes to create these earthy and charming napkin rings that are perfect for a Thanksgiving or garden table setting.

SuppliesA variety of seeds, beans and spices Cardbiard tubes White glue or tacky glue Craft knife Poster paint or acrylic paint Paint brush

Page 7: Ornament Ideas

InstructionsCut a cardboard tube into three sections, with each section about 1.5 inches wide. Each paper tube section will be the base for your napkin ring. Paint each one with a background color.

Prepare various seeds, grains, beans and spices.  Apply a thick layer of white glue or tacky glue on a small area of the napkin ring base. Tacky glue is a thicker variety of white glue and bonds things quicker than white glue.

Sprinkle seeds onto the glue.

Work on a section at a time. If you're using white glue, you may need to let each section set before moving on to the next. Tacky glue will bond the seeds more readily.

Continue until you have covered the entire surface of the napkin ring. Here are some notes and ideas for your mosaic design:  Doing simple geometric designs like stripes or triangles are the most doable for younger kids because it allows them to just sprinkle on the seeds.  An even more spontaneous option would be to have kids mix 2 or more types of seeds on a tray. After applying a thick layer of glue on the napkin ring, let them sprinkle, spoon on some seeds or roll the napkin ring onto the trayful of seeds.

Try out a more intricate design by carefully lining up the seeds rather than sprinkling them onto the napkin ring. You don't always have to do a full mosaic. The background can be a charming and integral part of your design.

Page 8: Ornament Ideas

Allow your finished napkin rings to dry completely.

If you're concerned about the seeds coming off, you can seal in the seeds by covering the surface of the napkin ring with a thick layer of white glue. Squeeze on a glob of glue and spread it with a paint brush, covering even the spaces between the seeds.

White glue and tacky glue will dry clear. These beautiful seed mosaic napkin rings are perfect for a Thanksgiving or garden table setting. This craft is reprinted courtesy of FirstPalette.com.

Recycled Greeting Cards:Make a Christmas Gift Box from Used Christmas Cards

Copyright © 2002-2010 Jane Lake

These little gift boxes are a wonderful homemade craft for children or anyone who likes to recycle.

Use Christmas cards, tie up with Christmas ribbon and they make neat Christmas tree trims that can hold little surprises - although they would be good for Easter or other occasions as well.

I've made them into a join-the-dots craft, so there's no measuring involved - just print out the template, transfer 12 dots for each square pattern piece, join them as instructed

Page 14: Ornament Ideas

and away you go - just follow the rest of the instructions and you'll be making recycled

greeting cards into gift boxes in no time!

Greeting Card Box Instructions

Note: This project is more difficult to explain than it is to do; once you have made one box, the next ones will go together more quickly and easily.

First print out the full size pattern. You can use the pattern many times as you don't need to cut it.

The smaller pattern is the bottom of the box, using the back page of the greeting card. Don't worry about a verse or two, or any other small amount of printing; usually it's invisible when the box is folded up.

The larger pattern makes the box top. There are fold lines indicated, and two cut lines - you will assemble both the top and the bottom of the box in exactly the same way.

Begin by placing the pattern on the back of your card. For the top of the box, try to position it so that the most colorful or interesting scene of the card front will be centered in the middle of the pattern.

Page 15: Ornament Ideas

Working on the back, transfer 12 dots, as shown on the pattern, to your card. Place 4 dots at each corner of the square, and two more on each side, where indicated.

Now join the dots, copying the pattern. It isn't necessary to draw coloured lines; the colours are only to help with the instructions for the box -- you'll find, when you're done, that it sounds much more complicated than it is!

Next, cut into your card template where indicated on the pattern by the green lines.

It's time to start folding. Work from the blank side of the card, which will be the inside of your box. Begin by folding the four corner triangles outwards, so you're folding toward the printed side of the card.

Figure 1Now take a box side and fold it in half to crease it so the green corner line will meet the red line of the inside square, as shown on the paper template. Repeat with the other sides. See Figure 1.

Figure 2On the two longer sections, you will need to fold in the ends, as shown in Figure 2. These form two flaps which hold the box together in the last step.

Figure 3

Fold up the sides to form your box.

Figure 4

Last step is to fold the straight sides over the flaps that were made in Figure 2. Push all the triangular ends into place at the bottom of the box. Usually no glue is required to

Page 16: Ornament Ideas

keep the box together, however if you find the folds coming open, use a small dab of glue to fasten in place.

Use the same method to make the box bottom and the box top. You will find the top fits over the bottom fairly snugly, so the box when assembled does not fall apart.

Now you have made a tiny treasure box from a recycled greeting card. These are suitable in size to hold small treats, a few coins, candy, earrings or other small gifts.

For Halloween, add treat gifts or a small assortment of stickers, an eraser, pencil sharpener etc.

And for Christmas, embellish with thin ribbon and hang from your Christmas tree as ornaments to be opened on Christmas Day. They can also be added to wreaths, table settings etc. as a colourful little addition that holds a nice surprise.

Recycled Toilet-Paper-Roll Wall Decor!

I hope you've been saving those toilet paper rolls because this project is

fantastic! But I can't take credit for the brilliant idea, that goes to my friend

Tali the architect here. I've had this one on my agenda for ages and I've

Page 19: Ornament Ideas

been diligently saving those rolls, and now I've got something special

hanging in my kitchen. Yippee!

And I'm slowly chipping away at the list of recycled materials that I

suggested you save. And toilet paper rolls can be stored collapsed and

bound together with a rubber band if you're short on space!

This is a great project for all ages, and for those of you who'd like to get a

head start on Succah decorations this would be perfect!

My project is still in it's "natural" state, but I'm considering spray painting it

gold. Then I have a feeling no one will guess it's humble origins!

You'll Need:

recycled toilet paper tubes, or paper towel tubes, lots of them!

white glue or a hot glue gun

lots of paper clips, if you're using white glue

Page 20: Ornament Ideas

How To:

1. Cut tubes into evenly sized rings. You do want the rings to be the same

depth, so do take the extra time to measure! If you want to be a

perfectionist, cut with a craft knife and a metal ruler.

2. Start gluing tubes together. I used hot glue since it's quicker, but I'd

recommend using the white glue and paper clips method for kids. Use the

paper clips to hold the pieces together as they dry flat on a table.

3. I really didn't have a plan so I decided to assemble flowers, and figure out

what to do with them afterwards! You might want to actually design

something first for more certain results. You could even plan your design on

the computer!

4. Run to the neighbors to see if they have some extra tubes, when you run

out!

5. Finish assembling your entire design and paint if desired. Hang and enjoy!

Crayon School Box

~

August 2004

Project idea by 8 yr old David

© Copyright 2004 by AOK Corral Craft and Gift Bazaar.  All rights reserved. These projects are for your personal use only and may not be reprinted or copied.

Materials Needed:

Cardboard Quaker Oats Container Size Small - Approx. 16 - 18oz

Cereal Box Self Adhesive Velcro

Pieces Tacky Glue 1 and 1/2 inch wide

Packing Tape Clothes Pin

Ruler Scissors Black Marker Acrylic Paint Paint Brush Colored Construction

Paper

Make the Crayon Box;

Empty the oatmeal container and discard the lid. Look inside the container to find the joining line that winds up

the cardboard to the top of the container. Select two opposite sides of the container that do not land on

the joining line to be the front and back of your box. (You will

Page 22: Ornament Ideas

not want your front and back to be on the joining line because this will weaken the cuts you will create in the next step.)

On one selected side, using your marker, make a 2 inch line down the container starting at the top.

Then, make another 2 inch line down the container 3/4 inch away from the first line. The cardboard in between these two lines will form the front "tab" of the box, used for the clasp.

On the opposite selected side, make a 2 inch line down the container starting at the top.

Then, make another 2 inch line down the container 1 and 1/2 inches from the first line. The cardboard in between these two lines will form the back "tab" of the box, used for the hinge.

Around the rest of the container, measure and make marks at 2 inches from the top.

Connect all those marks with a line going around the sides of the container from the front tab to the back tab.

Cut down along each of the 2 inch lines and keep cutting just 1/4 inch beyond the end of the line.

Then cut along the lines going around the container between the tabs.

Lastly, if you wish you can peel the label off of the container. (Your container should look like the container in photo 1.)

Paint the container in the color of your choice.

Make the Crayon Box Top;

To make the cone shaped top of the box; Click Here to use our Cone Pattern.

Use the cardboard from the empty cereal box and cut out the cone top using the pattern.

Cut the little opening shown in the pattern for the clasp.

To form the cone, bring the top edge of the cardboard over the glue area to the overlap line forcing the center into a point.

Flatten the cardboard back out and apply tacky glue to the glue area as shown on the pattern.

Page 23: Ornament Ideas

Form the cone again against the glue. Use a clothes pin to help hold the edges together at the base

of the cone while the glue dries in place. After the glue has dried, Paint the cone top in the color of

your choice.

Putting the Crayon Box Together;

Bend the hinge tab of the container back and forth a few times to make it flexible.

Put a generous amount of tacky glue on the outside of the hinge tab.

Carefully place the cone onto the top of the container sliding the clasp through the hole and guiding the hinge to the inside of the cone.

Take notice of where the hinge tab is located inside the cone top because this is where you will secure it with the glue.

Now, carefully open the front of the cone off of the clasp tab. Press the hinge tab inside the cone top as you noticed when

the top was completely on.  Also check to make sure that the bottom edge of the cone is

lined up with the bend in the hinge. Close the cone top slightly to see that the clasp hole still lines

up with the clasp. If it does not, adjust the hinge and top connection while the glue is wet.

Then, use a piece of packing tape to additionally secure the hinge inside the cone. This will also keep it in place as the glue dries.

Finishing your Crayon Box;

Cut two strips of construction paper that are 4 inches by 8 inches.

Glue both pieces together along the 4 inch width by overlapping one piece over the other about 1/2 inch.

After the glue dries, draw and color 1/2 inch thick wavy black lines on both of the long edges of the paper.

Page 24: Ornament Ideas

Draw an oval shape and write the owner's name inside the oval.

Wrap the paper around the crayon container and allow the end to overlap the begining about 1/2 inch. Trim off extra paper.

Turn the construction paper over and put tacky glue around all the edges.

Apply the paper to the container about 1/2 inch up from the bottom and make sure the name oval will not fall directly under the clasp.

Apply a small piece of velcro (about 1/2 inch square) to the outside end of the clasp tab.

Feed the clasp tab up through the hole in the cone.  Close the top of the crayon box all the way down and bend the

clasp tab down. Apply the matching small piece of velcro to the container's

side where the clasp tab meets it.

Done! A Fun to Make School Box for Pencils, Markers or

Crayons.http://www.allcrafts.net/fjs.htm?url=www.aokcorral.com/projects/how2aug2004.htm
