Before Steve Smyers and his archi-tectural team softened the course, Orlando’s Grande Pines Golf Club

developed a reputation as a punishing track. Bunkers were seemingly unavoidable and tufts of wispy native grasses served as fi nal resting places for wayward shots. The club’s slick, sloping greens were as diffi cult to read as an article on the intricacies of the credit default swap.

The 2003 re-design that would even-tually earn Grande Pines the distinction of

Marriott Golf property of the year (2008) removed bunkers, widened landing strips, dialed back native areas and installed dog-legs. The inherent qualities of the layout remained intact, but the course became much more playable. While Grande Pines is less daunting now, it continues to be a stern test of shot-making ability. And while they roll true, those greens still take some getting used to.

A new maintenance practice will only magnify the improvements at Grande

Pines, cementing its status as a “must play” for the coming season. Grande Pines will be doing its fi rst-ever full tee-to-green rye and Poa overseed, and is expected to be in all-time form for the start of 2011.

Grande Pines has more tree-lined fairways than a typical Florida course, and visually imitates a more forested setup you’d fi nd in North Carolina.

As the upscale resort course enters a new decade, this Marriott masterpiece is arguably the most dynamic layout in

Central Florida. Aesthetically pleasing and well-kept

green complexes are the hallmark of the design. Many greens are guarded by deep bunkers, water features or both, and nar-row, elevated openings leave little or no room for error.

Placement is also at a premium. A number of the smooth, pristine put-ting surfaces have multiple tiers. If your approach comes to a stop in the wrong section of a green, two-putting becomes a

diffi cult proposition. Overall yardage from the back tees is

listed at 7,012, but Grande Pines tends to feel shorter if you can take advantage of the angles and shortcuts available to you. Driver is not a must on every hole. In fact, some fairways on short par 4s won’t hold a tee shot struck purely depending on the tee box you’re hitting from.

A unique mixture of short and me-dium length par 4s keeps the golfer’s mind sharp throughout the round. On the front side there are two par 4s – Nos. 3 and 7 –

that measure less than 350 yards from the tee, but present winding doglegs to deal with. By contrast, the front nine features three holes that exceed 400 yards, includ-ing the striking 429-yard 6th that features a bend to the left and a sizeable greenside lake.

Like the front, the second nine wastes little time showing off the goods that keep golfers coming back to Grande Pines. Rated as the second toughest hole on the course, the 551-yard par-5 11th is certainly a classic. Water looms on the right side for the duration of this true three-shot par 5, putting more value on accuracy than

length. A birdie is possible if you can leave yourself with a short approach and avoid the water and bunker fronting the green.

The remainder of the back nine is high-lighted by a trio of par 4s – the 14th, 16th and 18th – that will test every aspect of your game from driver to fl at stick. All three measure over 435 yards from the back tees, and feature severe doglegs and require deft approach shots to challenging greens.

Thankfully, a pair of quality par 3s break up this stretch of impressive par 4s, providing golfers with a brief respite before

the next challenge arrives.

The ability to draw the ball from right to left, and cut it back left to right is always a valuable skill. It can be the difference between a routine green hit in regula-tion and a diffi cult up-and-down out of a sandy grave at Grande Pines.

At its core, Grande Pines is a

thinking man’s golf course where potential problem areas are more likely to be visited by aggressive players. Calculating a proper game plan and deciphering the quick, well-contoured greens necessitates patience and repeat play.

“It’s a course that has to be played and studied and understood,” Smyers told the Lakeland Ledger when Grande Pines re-opened in 2003. “You’re not supposed to get it the fi rst time around.”

“The idea was to not make the course too tough off the tee with forced carries and length, but to create a golf course where you really had to place your ball,”

said Grande Pines Director of Golf Andy Mitchell. “The course is entirely out in front of you, but there are places on every hole you simply can’t hit the ball and not pay a price.”

Smyers, who teamed with player consultant Nick Faldo at Grande Pines, has built outstanding layouts from the heart-land of the U.S. to Australia, but he’s saved some of his best work for his home state of Florida.

In addition to Grande Pines, which was known as International Golf Club before he got a hold of it, Smyers is the architect of record for the award-winning Southern Dunes Golf & Country Club in Haines City and Old Memorial in Tampa. He also revitalized prestigious Isleworth Golf and Country Club.

Grande Pines has kept its promise to preserve and protect the environmental in-tegrity of the land it was built upon. You’ll notice unaltered marsh and native areas as you move from one hole to the next. This eco-friendly approach was celebrated in 2007 when the course earned Audubon Certifi cation through the Audubon Coop-

erative Sanctuary Program for golf courses. Golfers staying at the doorstep of

Disney will discover that Grande Pines is a quick and painless commute. The golf club is located just down the road from Sea World off of International Drive.

Four sets of tees give beginners a chance to play Grande Pines, and all golf carts are equipped with GPS systems that give real time yardage readings. You can even order lunch from the comfort of your cart and have it ready, warm and waiting as you make the turn.

Those looking to take their game to the next level should check out the Faldo Golf Institute across the road from Grande Pines. The premier golf instruction outfi t has programs to match each player’s skill level and desired goals. Applying expertise matched to your game, the institute caters to elite players, new players and everyone in between.

Grande Pines Golf Club, which re-opened in 2004, has established itself as a “must play” for visitors to Central Florida. Voted one of “America’s Best Resort

Courses” by Golfweek magazine, this 18-hole championship gem is also highly desired by the locals, offering up a distin-guished experience every time it’s played. Grande Pines was designed to challenge the inner champion in every golfer and will cater to the boldest of players, while still offering options at every turn for the more conservative player. Nestled among sparkling lakes, towering pines and fl ourishing palms, Grande Pines was recently certifi ed as an “Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.” Not to forgo a single ounce of quality, the course boasts the latest TifEagle and Tif-Sport grasses. You’ll also fi nd the latest collection of top name brand merchandise and equipment in the golf shop, and the clubhouse offers breakfast or lunch with full bar ser-vice from the Greenside Grille which overlooks the 9th and 18th green. With its picturesque setting, strategic challenges, and a staff that is committed to excellence, it’s no wonder why Grande Pines was voted 2009 “Property of the Year” amongst Marriott Golf’s entire portfolio.

Eagle Creek Golf Club

Picture this: The breezes are blow-ing across Central Florida (aren’t they always?), but unlike other courses in the area, Eagle Creek is fi rm and fast, with Scottish-style revetted bunkers between you and the pin 40 yards away. You shape a bump-and-run shot within three feet and drain the putt to get into your buddy’s wallet. You’ve just experienced something you’ll fi nd nowhere else in the Orlando area, the true Scottish golf expe-rience of Eagle Creek Golf Club, located just southeast of Orlando International Airport. From the moment you arrive inside the gates at Eagle Creek and are greeted by the Union Jack fl ying alongside Old Glory, you know you’re in for a unique round. By the time you leave, you’ll likely

have not only used every club in your bag, but something even more impor-tant, your imagination. For Eagle Creek offers a challenge nobody else in Central Florida can, or will. By not overseeding the summer Bermuda with winter rye, Eagle Creek gives you a taste of Scottish-links golf, with dry, hard and fast fairways and fi rm greens. At Eagle Creek, brown is beautiful. Oh, the folks at Eagle Creek aren’t just letting the sheep roam a dormant course for the winter. It’ll still be im-maculately manicured, the greens cut to exacting specifi cations and the sod-stacked bunkers groomed as smoothly as any course anywhere. But Eagle Creek thought you might enjoy the challenges of the great links courses of Scotland and

Orlando’s True Scottish Golf Experience

Ireland, without the hassle of the trip overseas. You’ll certainly hit your drives longer, you’ll play an entirely different game, on a course that’s got a lot of character, but won’t beat you up. And when the day is over, you’ll probably have more stories to tell your friends about the unique, and fun round of golf you just played. And isn’t that what the game is all about? The “game” at one of the country’s only par-73 layouts has always been dis-tinctive, a European/American design of Floridian Ron Garl and Englishman How-ard Swan, exemplifi ed by the fi nal hole. It

was originally designed as a long par 4 with a lake behind the green and a shaved area behind that saved for lawn bowling, croquet and the like in front of the clubhouse to complete the European theme. During construction, course owner Peter Emerson Jones had the brainstorm to move the green behind the lake and make the hole a fabulous 535-yard risk-reward par 5. That forced-carry fi nish over a coquina rock bulkhead ended up costing Jones $250,000 to

014-017 Eagle Creek .indd 2014-017 Eagle Creek .indd 2 10/13/10 1:30:25 PM10/13/10 1:30:25 PM

16 centralfl orida.golfersguide.com FALL/WINTER 2010-11

reconfi gure the hole, but the “extra” par 5 that brings the course to its signature par-73 has created more than that in “buzz,” much of it from the players in the Belfry restaurant that now overlooks the green, where the advice to “lay-up” or “go for it” fl ows freely. You think former Gator Chris DiMarco laid up when he set the course record of 63? Maybe DiMarco’s success with the European fl avor at Eagle Creek was a precursor to his great run at the British Open? Eagle Creek is also the fi rst course Cen-tral Florida to install Mini Verde grass on its greens, a strain de-signed to hold up better under the stress of the Florida climate. And when tightly-mown, the Mini Verde greens run better than 10 on the Stimpmeter. For a course known for the playabil-ity of its par 5s, the par 3s, as a group, might affect your score more. Three of the four are handicapped among the 12 toughest holes on the course, because they’re all over 170 yards even from the mid-handicap yellow tees. The 11th is home to much of what makes Eagle Creek distinctive, a waste area trimmed by na-tive grasses near the tee and a large green guarded by a trio of Swan’s sod-stacked bunkers, manicured to give you brick wall-like feeling of denial. Among Garl’s signature bunker complexes (there are 98 bunkers at Eagle

Creek, not counting the waste areas) are sets of cross-bunkers on two of the par 5s and a combination of four revetted bun-kers in the front of the par-4 14th green. Has it worked? Course critics, profes-sionals in the golf industry, and most importantly, players like you, continue to add to the accolades at Eagle Creek. It all began soon after the fi rst tee went into the fi rst tee box, when Travel & Leisure

Golf Magazine selected it as one of the best courses to open in Flori-da since 2000. Among the other “bests” from the crit-ics include Florida Golf Central’s “Best 18th Hole in Florida” award for the 535-yard signature

fi nishing hole. The 18th was also honored as one of the “Best 18 in Orlando” by Golfweek’s Golf Life Orlando Magazine and even the 19th hole (home of the Belfry restaurant) is on a list with such private clubs as Isleworth in Orlando Magazine’s “Best 19th Holes.” You always like to be recognized by your peers. Eagle Creek had held a number of Florida State Golf Association events in its fi rst seasons, but was hon-ored with hosting the 62nd Florida Open in the fall of 2006, won by former Florida Gator All-American Camilo Benedetti. FSGA Executive Director Rick Whitfi eld commented that Eagle Creek’s layout was “unusual compared to the typical Florida course. It has great bunkering, some eleva-tion change and there are several great

risk-reward holes that added excitement to the Florida Open.” Eagle Creek also played host to the Hooters’ Collegiate Women’s Match Play Championship in the fall of 2006 and the 2007 Florida State Public Links Championship. But the most important reviews came from the golfers who play Eagle Creek every day, and they gave the course 4-1/2 Stars in Golf Digest’s Places to Play. Nobody in the state rated higher. And Golf Digest readers ranked Eagle Creek among the very best in “consistently excelling in the area of customer service.” Eagle Creek is home to the interna-tionally-recognized Graves Golf Academy, where Todd and Tim Graves have devel-oped training techniques based on the teachings of the legendary Moe Norman, who’s simple and effi cient swing theories have helped thousands of golfers improve their games. Going the extra step has led to the suc-cess of a place like Eagle Creek. The club’s attention to environmental details has resulted in inclusion among the Audubon Society’s International Silver Signature Courses. The professionalism of the staff that’s committed to exceeding expectations is one of the reasons so many groups have enjoyed successful outings at Eagle Creek that come with the Five-Star Tournament experience that includes being featured on the Parview GPS system along with updated leaderboards from the pro tournaments. The award-winning

banquet and catering staff looks forward to hosting your special event for up to 150 guests, but just as important is the iced towel on a warm Florida afternoon offered by the customer service rep overseeing the pace of play. Eagle Creek Golf Club was designed to blend unobtrusively within the master-planned Eagle Creek golf community that is developing a variety of single-family homes, villas, townhomes, condominiums and apartments to create a unique neigh-borhood close to schools, shopping, full-service recreation facilities and a network of walking trails. You can fi nd out more about the development online at www.eaglecreekcommunity.com. Located just two miles off Highway 417 (Central Florida Greenway) and 11 minutes from Orlando International Airport, with shower and locker facilities in a gorgeous 14,000-square-foot New England manor clubhouse, Eagle Creek is still the best place for that “last” round of Orlando golf for vacationers. And now it’s the place for the most unique round. One thing is for sure: you’ll need all your clubs to play Stoney-brook.

public golf course. GolfWorld ranks Hills No. 2 on its list of “The Games Hottest Architects” and GolfLink.com puts Stoneybrook West at No. 9 on its statewide countdown of “Best Courses to Play.”

Stoneybrook West’s unique location provides elevation changes that will produce spectacular ap-proaches against dramatic backdrops.

Carved out of orange groves and overlooking Black Lake, Stoneybrook West displays Hills’ trademark bunkers and undulating fairways.

After carefully thinking and playing your way to the green, be prepared to face some of the swiftest greens in the area, produced by installing the latest hybrid in putting turf (TifEagle).

The Stoneybrook Grill is the perfect place to eat, drink and relax after a great round of golf. It is open daily for lunch and happy hour.

FALL/WINTER 2010-11 centralfl orida.golfersguide.com 71

Local Golf News from the Central Florida Area Fall/Winter 2010-11

There are a few myths that show up on the lesson tee from time to time. These myths are passed on from generation to generation, and can have a harmful effect on your golf swing. I have chosen two of the most common myths to debunk:No. 1 – You should always keep your head downNo. 2 – You have to ‘get under’ the ball to get it airborne

Do any of these sound familiar? Are you currently trying to incorporate any of them into your golf swing.

Myth No. 1 A very common fi x offered by sympa-

thetic golf buddies and spouses is “Keep your head down.” In reality, this hurts your game far more than it helps. When golfers keep their head down through the swing, any chance of getting into a good balanced fi nish-ing position is lost.

Look at the photo of the two fi nishes.

The photo on the left is an example of what happens when a golfer attempts to keep his/

her head down during the swing. Notice how, by keeping my head fi xed, my golf swing is restricted and I’m unable to transfer my weight onto my left side. I drew a vertical line from my left foot up through my body.

Notice the difference between the two swings. By allowing the head to turn with your chest so that you’re watching the ball in fl ight, versus looking at the divot where the ball used to be, your entire body can rotate to the target and fi nish in a good, balanced position.

Myth No. 2The idea that you must get under the

ball to get it airborne is the root cause for many chilly dipped and thinned wedge shots around the green. Golf is a brilliant game of opposites. You want to hit down on the ball to make the ball go up. If you try to swing up on the ball, you’re actually raising the club up into the ball. As a result, you will either bot-tom the club out too early (a fat shot) or work the leading edge of the club up so you will strike the ball in the equator ( a thin shot).

Notice the photo of the two impact

Two Golf Myths for the New Golfer

positions. In the image on the left, I’m trying to “get under the ball.” Notice how the shaft is tilted backward. That is a weak position to strike a ball. The photo on the right is a better impact position because I’m trying to swing down and through the ball, rather than lift it. The shaft has a forward lean and my weight is in my left side where it should be.

Sometimes those old standard golf “tips” aren’t all that benefi cial. Let your head turn with your shoulders into a good proud fi nish position. Teach yourself to hit down and compress the ball and get away from the thought that you have to help the ball into the air. By getting a better picture in your mind of what the swing is, you will be on your way to a sound golf game.

■ LAKE MARY PREP SENIOR WINS CITY TITLE

A 17-year-old senior at Lake Mary Prep was not very kind to his elders on Sunday in the Lake Mary City Golf Championship at Timacuan Golf Club.

Owen Curry shot an even-par 72 from the back tees over the Ron Garl design to win the city title by two shots over runner-up Jay Sampsell. John Henry was third at 76.

“I didn’t make as many putts as I would have liked, but overall I played pretty well,” said Curry, a member at Heathrow Country Club and a native of Colchester, England.

“Timacuan is a great golf course and is in good condition. It is a strategic layout. You have to play the par fi ves well, and if you do that you shoot a good score.”

Curry had 14 pars to go with two birdies and two bogeys. He secured the title with birdies on 10 and 12.

Finishing tied for fourth at 78 were Chris Parone and Josh Strausbaugh, followed by Mike Shields at 79.Other winners were:

■ NEW TURF, SAME GREAT LAYOUT AT SOUTHERN DUNES

Haines City’s award-winning South-ern Dunes Golf & Country Club has re-opened with new Champion Bermuda Dwarf greens, the result of an unexpect-ed improvement project that closed the course for much of the summer. Grain has yet to take hold, and the greens are rolling as well as any course in the Orlando area.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Champion Dwarf, it is very dense and aggressive grass that makes for a beautiful putting surface, allowing cours-es to maintain higher green speeds year round. The added bonus to Champion Dwarf is that overseeding is no longer required since the grass holds its color during the winter months in Florida.

Many of the most prestigious courses in the Southeast are now install-ing Champion Dwarf including Seminole CC the No. 1 course in Florida. In 2011 “The Atlanta Athletic Club” will be the fi rst course in over 30 years to host a “Major” (The PGA Championship) fea-turing Bermuda grass (Champion Dwarf) greens.

New landscaping here and there

throughout the course will also accom-pany the newly renovated greens. The Champion Dwarf greens will only add to the popularity of this stunning course that has been consistently ranked among the nation’s best. If it has been a while since you have played Southern Dunes you will certainly want to put it on your play list the next time you visit Orlando.

■ FALCON’S FIRE GOLF DEBUTS NEW LOOK

Falcon’s Fire Golf Club has de-buted a new and improved look, further establishing it as one of Central Florida’s leading public-access coures. The $1.5 million renovation project is highlighted by resurfaced greens, a Championship-length layout stretching to just over 7,000 yards and a remodeled clubhouse.

As part of the golf course enhance-ment project, all greens were resurfaced with TifEagle variety of turf, an UltraD-warf Bermuda grass, providing golfers with faster, smoother putting conditions.

Additional modifi cations to the course included the enlarging of bun-kers, the re-sculpt-ing of fairways, the creation of new run-off areas around certain greens, and installing an im-proved greens

irrigation and drainage system. Further, with the construction of

additional tee boxes on select holes, the course has been stretched to over 7,000 yards from the Championship tees, offer-ing a fair challenge for golfers of all skill levels, while ensuring the shot-making skills of elite players are tested when playing from the tips. Complementing the exciting renovations is a new fl eet of carts complete with a new GPS system.

In addition to the new tee boxes, Falcon’s Fire has invested in a breadth of new maintenance equipment, which will improve the daily operation of the club, while ensuring a best-in-class condi-tioned golf course.

■ STONEYBROOK WESTCOME BACK TO OUR NEW FUTURE

Since our purchase of the Stoney-brook West in late spring, we have been working diligently to improve every aspect of the property to provide each guest with an exceptional experience.

Our maintenance team has been hard at work to improve the overall look and feel of the golf course. We’ve re-ceived many comments from our guests about how great the course looks and the improved quality of the entire facility. Recently we completed extensive work to resolve several long standing drainage issues.

We have added a new fl eet of Club Car golf carts and have completed many physical improvements in the clubhouse area – from tree trimming to refurbish-ing the golf shop. We are delighted to announce that our restaurant is now open and that we are ready to host daily lunch and events of any kind. Come see us for some our ‘themed’ evening dinners which have become a big neighborhood hit.

We are proud to be part of the Cele-bration Golf Management team and urge you to visit our other courses in the area including the Celebration Golf Club, Kings Ridge Golf Club, Legends Golf and Country Club and our newest property, the Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Point in Windermere.

The CGM team is currently estab-lishing a reservation center being built to assist you in making tee times at any of our properties. The center will be open-ing in the 4th quarter and we want you to come get to know us and let us Create Great Memories for each of you.

So please take time to come visit to the new Stoneybrook West Golf Club… it will be a whole new future!

They don’t make professional athletes and husbands like the great Byron Nelson anymore. That’s the resounding message passed

along by Peggy Nelson, Byron’s wife of 20 years, in her loving tribute to the man she worshiped and the time they spent together. “Life with Lord Byron: Laughter, Romance, and Lessons Learned from Golf’s Greatest Gentleman” chronicles the couple’s relation-ship and the lessons they taught each other in touching detail.

Peggy provides fi rst-hand stories of Byron’s compassion, kindness, humility and competitive fi re, and compiles a wide-range of tales from friends, family and fellow golfers.

Byron won 52 PGA Tour tournaments during his brilliant but brief career, includ-ing fi ve major championships. A humble hero, he exited the professional golf scene to pursue other interests and avoid some of the attention his fame required.

“(Byron) didn’t consider himself famous, he would just say a lot of people know me,” Peggy relayed from Fairway Ranch just outside of Dallas. “He always tried to be very patient and one of the things I admired most about him was one of the reasons he left the Tour early. The pressure from media and fans had reached such a level, and there was so much attention, he was concerned he might be unkind to someone.”

Byron’s most notable achievement on the golf course came during the 1945 season, when he won an unprecedented 11 consecu-tive PGA Tour events, and 18 of 35 overall. He would fi nish second an astonishing seven times in the same year, and set a record for scoring average of 68.33 which stood until a guy named Tiger Woods broke it in 2000.

But above all, the most important aspect of Byron’s life was the relationships he formed with people and his relationship with God. Peggy hammers home the point that Byron never forgot where his talent came from, and took every opportunity to change the lives of those he encountered for the better. For a man with so much infl uence and fame, his humility was heaven sent.

“Humility is something you have to work at,” Peggy said. “Other people’s percep-tion of you will be very closely tied to how you behave in the small moments as well as the big ones. Sometimes there are heroes that are really genuine heroes through and through.”
