Bulletin November 18-28, 2004 78th Fall North American Bridge Championships Volume 78, Number 1 Friday, November 19, 2004 Editors: Brent Manley and Henry Francis Daily Orlando, Florida Complimentary Self Parking Complimentary self parking, located in the resort’s parking garage and directly behind the North Tower, has been extended exclusively to ACBL players! Special self parking passes for registered resort guests can be obtained at the Front Desk. This can be placed on your dashboard. Non- hotel guests may present their convention card at the time they depart the garage. The handicapped- accessible self parking lot is located directly in front of the convention center entrance and is on a first-come, first-served basis. In addition, valet parking is available for $15 per 24 hours. Advice from the ACBL staff - rent a car! The Marriott World Center is a terrific resort hotel and nearly ideal for an NABC, but with the golf course and development around the hotel, players will not be able to walk to nearby restaurants if they choose not to dine in any of the fine restaurants in the hotel. Minimum cab fares to restaurants will be about $12, so with the great values available with rental cars, we strongly urge you to rent a car and take advantage of the free parking offered by the hotel to bridge players. For your convenience, Enterprise Rent-a-Car is located in the South Tower and is offering a 15% discount off their already-low rental rates for bridge players. Stop by or contact them at house extension 85241. Hours are 8-6 on Friday, 8-2 on Saturday, 9-1 on Sunday and 8-5 Monday - Thursday. Peter Mollemet Longtime ACBL employee Peter Mollemet died of heart failure Nov. 18 in Memphis. The 61- year-old Mollemet, who had battled heart problems for years, arrived for work at ACBL Headquarters Thursday morning complaining of shortness of breath. He was taken to a Memphis-area hospital, where he died shortly thereafter. Today is Peter Mollemet Day The unexpected death sent shock waves through the ACBL family, particularly in the office at Memphis, where Mollemet was well liked for his dry wit and easy-going manner. Headquarters staffers Rena Hetzer and Carol Robertson were both close friends of Mollemet. “Peter was so smart and so funny, just a joy to be around. He was always ready with a zinger. I’ll miss his impish humor,” said Hetzer. Robertson added, “I am going to miss Peter Mollemet so much. I’ve never had a friend like him. He was always there when I needed him. Peter loved helping people, especially in the bridge world. He is going to be missed in many ways. Thank you, Peter, for being my friend.” Mollemet was best known to ACBL members for his decades of service as a tournament director, especially in District 5 (western New York state and Pennsylvania, northeast Ohio and northern West Virginia). He drew the initial Golden Age character and DC comic book, The Flash #1, which appeared in January 1940. Page 4 Daily Bulletin

New members of ACBL are often confused bythe array of terms they hear: knockout teams, redpoints, rookie. Here’s a list of terms and theirmeanings:

Knockout Teams: an event in which a team (offour, five or six players — with four playing at atime) plays another team. The losers are eliminatedor “knocked out” while the winners play otherwinners until only one team remains undefeated.

The length of a KO match may vary from asingle session to a full day (the Vanderbilt andSpingold) to a multi-day event (the BermudaBowl).

Bracketed Knockout Teams: a KO event inwhich teams are divided into groups — usually of8, 16 or 32 teams — based on their masterpointholdings. The top group — Bracket I — and allother groups compete in a separate event with theirown set of winners.

Compact Knockout Teams: a shorter versionof Bracketed KO teams.

Swiss Teams: an event in which a team (offour, five or six players — with four playing at atime) plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nine-board matches. Team A sits North-South at Table 1and East-West at Table 2 while Team B sits East-West at Table 1 and North-South at Table 2. Theresults are compared and scored by InternationalMatch Points (IMPs).

Pairings for the first round are random. Pairingsfor succeeding rounds are determined by a team’swin-loss record or Victory Point total.

International Match Points (IMPs): the mostcommon method of scoring Swiss Team matches. IfTeam A scores plus 620 for bidding and making 4♠on Board 4 and Team B scores only plus 170 (theydidn’t bid the game), the difference is 450 — whichconverts to 10 IMPs. The IMP chart is shown on theinside of your convention card.

Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoringSwiss Team matches. After the scores are comparedand converted to IMPs, the IMP total is convertedto Victory Points. A team’s VP total may be used todetermine its next opponent and its final standing.

Side Game Series: single-session pair gamesthat pay red points. The Morning Side Game SeriesI, for example, is played at 9 a.m. the first Friday,Saturday and Sunday of each NABC. Pairs mayplay in one, two or three sessions. You must play inat least two sessions to be eligible for overall goldpoints.

Flighted pairs: When flighting is used, thefield is divided by expertise or experience or bothinto several separate games. Flight A — “unlimitedmasterpoints” — is open to all players while theremaining flights are limited. Flight B might be 0-500 MPs or 0-1000 MPs while Flight C might be 0-300 or 0-500.

Each flight is scored individually, andmasterpoint awards are made for each flight.

The masterpoint holdings of the playersdetermine their flight. If one player is an expertwhile his partner is new to the game, the pair mustcompete in Flight A if the expert has a lot ofmasterpoints.

In flighted events, you may play up but notdown. That means you may play in Flight A orFlight B even if your masterpoint holding qualifiesyou for Flight C. Conversely, you may not play inFlight B or Flight C if you are a Flight A player.

Stratified Pairs: The idea is to competeagainst everyone but to be ranked only with yourpeers.

Each pair is assigned a stratum or “strat” basedon the masterpoint holding of the partner with moremasterpoints.

Example: A = 1500+ masterpoints; B = 500-1500 MPs; C = 0-500 MPs.

Thus, the most experienced players are placedin Strat A, intermediate players in Strat B and lessexperienced players in Strat C. Masterpoints areawarded for placings in all strats, but gold pointsare awarded only in A and B.

The game proceeds normally — the differencecomes when the scores are tabulated and ranked.

In a three-strat game, the scores are rankedthree times. The first ranking is done as in a regularopen game. These are the Strat A results.

If a B or C pair does well in this ranking, theyreceive full credit for that performance. It is not allthat uncommon for a Strat C pair to place firstoverall, and they receive the full masterpoint awardfor that game.

Note: A pair is eligible for only one set ofmasterpoint awards and automatically receives thehighest award.

The second ranking compares the scores ofonly the B and C pairs — the scores of the Strat Apairs are eliminated. Once again, if a C pair doeswell, they receive points for their finishing positionin the Strat B results.

The third and final ranking compares the scoresof only the C pairs — all the scores of the Strat Aand B pairs are eliminated.

Strati-flighted Pairs: The top group plays in agame of their own — Flight A. The rest of the fieldin divided into strats and plays as in a regularstratified pairs.

A recent innovation has been stratifying withinFlight A. Flight A-1 may be listed as 3000+ MPswhile Flight A-2 (or Flight X) may be listed as 0-3000 MPs.

She won 35 North American titles includingtwo Vanderbilts, five Spingolds and fourReisingers. She won the McKenney Trophy (nowthe Barry Crane Top 500) three times: in 1941,1942 and 1944.

When Smith died of cancer in 1969, the BridgeBulletin remembered her as a player “without apeer among women and very few peers amongmen. Helen played like a man, it was true. But shealso played like a lady.”

The opening lead is the ♥K. You (South) aredeclarer. Plan the play.

If you think that East’s 4♥ bid is aggressivewith so few high-card points, think again. It is aconservative jump. Holding a weakdistributional hand with a good fit, facing apartner who is also weak, you know thatopponents surely have a game and a likely slam.

At least jumping to 4♥ (down only one, bythe way) takes away several levels of biddingthat the opponents would like to use to determinewhether they have game or slam.

What about South’s leap to 6♠?Conservative or aggressive? Well, it certainlyisn’t aggressive. All South needs to find in theNorth hand is the ♣J and 6♠ is cold. If hedoesn’t have it, that’s his fault.

He biggest worry is that North has the ♣Kand 7♠ is cold.

On to the play: when holding a superpowerful trump suit and a void in the suit theopponents have led, be very careful about ruffingwith your lowest trump. That low trump cansometimes be used to get to dummy.

If you ruff the opening lead with any spadeother than the 2, you make your contract. Youdraw trumps, cash the top diamonds and enterdummy with your carefully preserved ♠2 todiscard a club on the ♦10. The club finesse loses, but who cares? You have bid and made avulnerable slam.

Now try making this contract if you ruff theopening lead with the♠2.

Points to remember:1. With a big fit for partner’s major suit plus

wild distribution (preferably a singleton or void),jump in partner’s suit, usually to game. Just doit! You will either make your contract or it willbe a good save.

2. When all you need to make game or slamis a stray jack or queen in partner’s hand, bid it.Don’t expect partner to know that’s all you need.

3. When holding a massive trump suit, bereluctant to ruff with a low trump that mightpossibly serve as a late dummy entry. Amen.

Truth in advertisingB.D. Lim of Palos Verdes CA and her partner

are relatively new bridge players. Lim remembersat their very first bridge tournament at HollywoodPark CA, they were defending against 4♠. Thedeclarer drew two rounds of trumps, and at thethird round, Lim discarded the ♣2.

Lim’s left-hand opponent asked Lim’s partner,“What’s your discard?”

Lim’s partner looked at the card and looked alittle perplexed. “It’s the two of clubs,” she said.

Lim’s LHO continued, “What does thatmean?”

At this point, Lim’s partner was a littleannoyed and said with a straight face, “That meansshe has no more spades!”

Notes Lim: “We have come a long way sinceand my partner is now a better player than I.”

Mollemet personallycreated each of the web-based versions of theonline Daily Bulletins from the recent NABCs.Mollemet’s dedication to his work was evidenteven as he departed for the hospital, enjoiningfellow employees to make sure the Orlando DailyBulletins were taken care of. Tributes from aroundthe ACBL poured in, and many recalled Mollemet’spreferred style of humor as the intelligent wise-guy.

Henry Cukoff: “My good friend Peter diedtoday, the reason still unknown. As always, he hadkept whatever was bothering him a secret. That wastypical Peter. Despite the fact that no one did morefor the players or his fellow tournament directors,he always kept his true feelings under thatseemingly impenetrable exterior.

“Well, the rest of us won’t have that problem. As more people learn of his passing, there will bean outpouring of affection for him. While heprobably would have been shocked by all thisattention, the rest of us certainly will not be.”

Patty Johnson: “Peter and I both worked ourfirst National back in 1977, and we hit it off rightaway. We were fast friends forever after that.”

Jim Miller: “When I worked my firsttournament in Lancaster back in 1989, Peter cameoff medical leave to personally offer his support. He helped me calm my nerves.”

Sol Weinstein: “Peter and I practically livedtogether during the late Eighties and the earlyNineties. The masterpoint system needed fixing, and we did the fixing at my house.”

Jonathan Steinberg: “He was super reliable. Ifyou sent him a problem in the evening, you’d haveyour answer in the morning — every time.”

Chris Patrias, fellow National TD, said, “Eventhough half his heart went away a few years ago, hehad a bigger heart than a lot of people.”

Mollemet leaves a sister, a niece and a nephew.

The last Orlando NABC, held in the fall of1998, didn’t set any attendance records but itproduced some fascinating deals. Here are a few.

Doing the mathBryan Maksymetz made a valuable overtrick

on this deal from the first qualifying session of theLife Master Open Pairs.

Maksymetz made his first good move by layingdown the ♣A. The fall of the ♣Q persuaded himthat East was 2-4-5-2.

Maksymetz cashed the ♠A and exited with aclub to East’s king. When East played the ♦Q, hishand counted out to 6 high-card points in the redsuits and the ♣K Q.

To make up an opening bid, East needed the♠Q, so Maksymetz laid down the ♠K and droppedthe queen offside.

* * *Converting the doubles

JoAnna and Lew Stansby posted a 68.5% gamein the afternoon and followed with 58% in theevening to claim the Life Master Open Pairs bymore than a board.

Reflecting on that huge first final session, Lewpointed to an unusual number of penalty doubles byhis side that resulted in lots of matchpoints.

because of the quick tricks in his hand, plus thegood possibility that JoAnna could get a heart ruff(she would have raised hearts had she held morethan two).

JoAnna did indeed get a heart ruff. Combined

with three diamond tricks and the ♣A, the resultwas plus 300 and 71.55 out of 77 matchpoints.

Four boards later, Lew converted another oneof JoAnna’s doubles.

In fact it would have taken a heart lead —unlikely on the auction — to defeat 4♣.

Lew’s pass turned out to be inspired, however, and plus 300 earned his side 67 matchpoints.

* * *Rita Shugart became the first women since

Helen Sobel Smith in 1957 to win the ReisingerBoard-a-Match Teams.

Shugart and her international squad — AndrewRobson and Tony Forrester of England and GeirHelgemo of Norway — led the event after days oneand two and after the first final session.

The team dropped out of first place afer thethird of nine rounds in the second final session. Forfour more rounds, the Shugart squad hung in,staying in second place, less than a board behindthe leaders. Shugart’s team regained the lead afterround seven, scored a near sweep in round eightand held on for the final three deals to eke out thewin.

The turning point, Shugart said, was Board 13in round five. Shugart and Robson were playingagainst Geoff Hampson and Eric Greco.

The key, obviously, was the diamond suit.Shugart was certain that Greco had the ♥A for hisvulnerable two-level opener, so she had to find the♦Q. If she guessed wrong and lost the lead, she washeaded for minus 200 or worse.

After winning the ♠Q, Shugart cashed the ♣Qand overtook the ♣10 with dummy’s jack. Shecashed the ♣9, pitching a heart, and called for the♦J from dummy, convinced that Greco needed the♦Q for his opener.

When the ♦J held, Shugart had 10 tricks and awin, since South at the other table went down in2NT.

Give Steve Robinson a chance for an extratrick, and you can bet he will take it. In fact, hemanaged a club trick with the singleton ♣Qopposite the ♣J 9.

The deal occurred in the second qualifyingsession of the Mitchell Open Board-a-MatchTeams. Robinson was playing with Peter Boyd.

Robinson led the ♠2 and East, who could seean endplay looming, discarded the ♣A. If East hadthrown his low club, Robinson would have had aneasy endplay with the ♣Q, forcing a heart returninto Robinson’s tenace.

When East unblocked clubs, Robinson cashedthe ♥A, removing West’s 7, and played the ♣Q.West won with the ♣K but had only the ♣10 left toplay to dummy’s good jack.

wonderful time playing bridge and traveling. Theydecided to come to their first NABC in Orlando, found Cotterman to say hello, and came in first inC Thursday afternoon – and later that evening – tokeep their winning streak alive. They look forwardto playing many more sessions in the I/N events, and they hope Cotterman will be around to be theirlucky charm.

Pre-Alert formsIf your partnership plays special overcalls, you
