So she became a club director. Then shevolunteered to help with the IN sections at anAtlanta tournament. Edith McMullin wasimpressed and she asked Whidden, “Want to be atournament director?”

Whidden’s answer was a resounding “Yes!”and that’s how her tournament directing began.

Her parents played a lot of bridge and she wasintrigued as she watched them play. That’s how shelearned the game – by watching.

DirectorsContinued from page 1

Carey SniderThe is the last National for Carey Snider of

Atlanta. She plans to get together with CarolMatthews, her bridge partner from 20 years ago, toreinstall their partnership. And she’ll play with herhusband Bill as well. But she’s going to miss beinga tournament director.

“I loved every day of my directing career,” shesaid. “I like the people and I love the directing staff. The camaraderie among directors is such awonderful feeling. I also love the challenge ofmaking tournaments work right. I’ll be leavingbehind a host of good friends.”

Her husband was in the military back in theSeventies, and he suggested that she learn bridge tobetter socialize with other military wives. “He’sregretted that move ever since,” she said.

Her directing career began in 1973 when shestarted working at a club. Betty Perkins had noticedher and asked her if she’d run the game for herwhen she was away. Then in 1985, Perkins said toher, “This is silly! Why don’t you really direct?” SoSnider asked for a chance and she got it.

“PJ (Pat Jackson), Patty Johnson and Kojak(Bill Schoder) were terrific – they helped me somuch along the way. Kojak was the one who put meon full-time.”

Snider still has a few tournaments ahead, butshe’ll she put “finis” to her career in January.

Marty Chaitt“I’m getting ready to make many more

mistakes as a player” is the way Marty Chaitt looksat his retirement from tournament directing. This ishis last NABC, but he still has one regional and twosectionals to go before calling it a day.

Calling it 46 years is more like it. Chaitt beganhis directing career way back in 1958. Of today’sactive directors, only Stan Tench has been pacingthe playing floor longer.

Chaitt had two reasons for ending his playingcareer and taking up directing. The first had to dowith his playing ability.

“When my youngest was born in 1958, Icouldn’t get out to play, so I kibitzed once in awhile. One night I was kibitzing Al Roth, and Iwatched him make a contract that I thoughtcouldn’t be made. When I got home I went over thishand in my mind for 35 minutes, and I finallyfigured out what Roth worked out in a matter ofseconds. That’s when I realized that I wasn’t cut outto be a champion player.”

The other reason was money. Chaitt had beenplaying rubber bridge, and he won five times in arow. The sixth time out he lost it all. He asked DickFreeman, a tournament director at the time, how hecould make bridge pay off, moneywise. “Direct,”said Freeman.

Chaitt asked how he could go about that.“Come to Richmond next weekend for the regionaland we’ll use you for three days.” That Labor Dayregional in Richmond was the beginning of a newlife.

And now Chaitt is starting another new life –bridge player and golfer. His partner in bridge willbe his partner in life – Ellasue, his wife for the past29 years. “I’m not much of a golfer,” he said.“There are two things I rarely miss – putts andtrees.”

In the next couple of days, you will seetelevision cameras around the hotel. The CanadianTelevision Network is filming a documentary aboutsome of Canada’s brightest bridge players. DirectorAndy Pedersen and cinematographer Mike Nolanwill be shooting Friday through Sunday, especiallyduring the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams.

We will make every effort to ensure thatfilming does not disturb play. If you have anyconcerns, please speak to a tournament director orcontact Linda Granell, director of marketing, in theTampa Room.

In addition, if you expressly do not want to befilmed, we will try to avoid including you in theshooting. However, please remember that these

Down 5 sound good?It wasn’t this time

By George Klemic

This deal came up in the first qualifying sessionof the Blue Ribbon Pairs.Board 7 ♠ A Q 4 3 2Dlr: South ♥ —Vul: Both ♦ 10 6 5 4

♣ Q J 6 2♠ K 10 ♠ J 8 7 6 5♥ K J 9 8 6 ♥ Q 10 3♦ A Q 9 7 3 ♦ 2♣ 4 ♣ A K 7 5

♠ 9♥ A 7 5 4 2♦ K J 8♣ 10 9 8 3

The auction was very brief – South’s 2♥opening was the final bid. South, when sorting herhand, thought the ♦K was the ♥K, making theheart suit worth the preempt.

West led his club singleton to partner’s king, and East switched to the ♦2. West won the queenand ace (East discarding a spade). East ruffed thediamond continuation with the 3. Now it wasWest’s turn for a ruff. East cashed the ♣A (Westdiscarding the ♠10) and led a club for partner toruff. When West returned still another diamond,East ruffed with the 10 and declarer took her firsttrick by overruffing with the ace. This was theposition at this point:

♠ A Q 4 3 2♥ –♦ –♣ Q

♠ K ♠ J 8 7 6♥ K J 9 8 ♥ Q♦ 9 ♦ –♣ – ♣ 7

♠ 9♥ 7 5 4 2♦ –♣ 10

South tried to cut down on the crossruff byleading a trump. I was all ready, ruffing low andprepared to exit with the ♠K so that I could ruffeither black-suit return and exit with a diamond toscore all my trumps for down five and plus 500.What a surprise! My partner won with the queen! He returned a club and we collected our 500 –declarer eventually took a long trump.

Could we have done better? Yes! After the handwas over, I realized what I could have done, and Iwould have known it would work.

Look back to the trick where declareroverruffed my partner’s 10 with the ace. Whywould she waste the ace if she had the queen? Shewouldn’t, of course. It could have been amechanical slip, but that wasn’t very likely.

If partner started with ♥Q-10-3, the right playon the trump lead was the king, a crocodile coup! When the king smothers the queen, West can drawall the outstanding trumps and score the fifthdiamond for down six and plus 600.

In practice, 500 and 600 scored the same in oursection – 14 out of a possible 25 matchpoints. Whyso few points? Well, a number of pairs bid andmade 4♥ for plus 620! Sometimes they weredoubled, and one was even redoubled!

A different viewBy Dave Butler, Keswick VA

The following deal was written up by MatthewGranovetter on Tuesday. My partner, Mark Dahl ofRichmond VA, had a different idea on bidding hishand (it came from the second qualifying session ofthe Open Board-a-Match Teams).

My partner’s 3♠ bid asked me to bid 3NT witha spade stopper. South tried a low club, which gaveme 11 tricks, and the run of the eight red winnersput unbearable pressure on South. This was theposition when I played the last heart winner:

♠ J 7♥ —-♦ K 10 9♣

♠ 8 5 ♠ K 6♥ 5 ♥ —-♦ 6 ♦ —-♣ 6 ♣ A K J

♠ A Q♥ —-♦ —-♣ Q 10 8

North’s plays are immaterial. When I playeddummy’s last heart, discarding the ♠6 from hand,South was dead. If he pitches the ♠Q, I put him inwith his blank ♠A to lead into the club tenace. If hediscards a club, his queen will drop and I’ll takethree club tricks. It was a satisfying plus 690, but itturned out to be overkill, since our teammatesbought the contact for 4♠, making for plus 620.

Bad trump splitPlayers in the Blue Ribbon Pairs don’t often find

themselves in 1-1 trump fits — and it’s doublyannoying when the outstanding trumps split 8-3 — butthat’s what happened to Geoff Hampson in the firstqualifying session of the Blue Ribbon Pairs. Despite asilly result, Hampson and Eric Greco ended the dayleading the field.

They played the deal in question against Steve andKerri Sanborn.

(1) Any solid long suit. With her own solid eight-bagger, Kerri figured she

would pass and come in later. Greco, looking at asingleton spade, figured that was his partner’s suit, andhe wasn’t disposed to jacking up the level of thebidding by trying to find out what he thought healready knew.

Steve, looking at honors in the other three suits —South’s suit was supposed to be “solid” — also figuredSouth’s suit was spades, and Steve didn’t see wherehis side might be going in the auction, so he passed aswell.

Kerri started off with the ♠Q, then cashed anotherhigh trump before switching to the ♣10. Hampsonwent up with the ♣A and played a diamond to his ace.Kerri ruffed and played a club to Steve’s jack. Shepitched a heart when Steve cashed the ♣K, then ruffedthe diamond return.

On the run of the trumps, Hampson came down tothe ♥K J in dummy. When Kerri exited with a lowheart, Hampson misguessed, putting up dummy’sking.

The upshot is that declarer took one trick, finishing down eight for minus 400 – not a bad resultconsidering that West is cold for 12 tricks in spades(North is squeezed in hearts and clubs on the run of thespades).

Getting to slam is no trivial matter, however, andNorth-South can bid up to 6♦ and go down only 300.

Plus 400, it turned out, was worth 19 of 25matchpoints for the Sanborns.

They won the 2nd Senior International Cup during the world championships in Istanbul, Turkey.Seated, John Onstott, non-playing captain Gene Freed and Marshall Miles; standing, Jim Robison,Neil Chambers and John Schermer. Not pictured is Leo Bell.

hoped he could find out before he had to attack thetrump suit on this deal from the BracketedKnockouts.

Fontaine, playing in 4♠, got a club lead to hisjack. He decided his first objective was to get rid ofhis diamond loser. So he led a heart to the queenand king, and East shot back another club. Hewould have been much better placed if he had triedthe ♦K. Fontaine took his ♣A and led a secondheart. West went up with the ace and led a thirdclub. Fontaine pitched a diamond from dummy asEast ruffed with the 6. Now came the switch todiamonds, and Fontaine took his ace. He crossed tothe ♠K and got rid of his losing diamond on the ♥Jas East followed with the 10.

Then he checked his counting. West had sixclubs and it appeared very likely he had four hearts. He had followed to two diamonds as well, so hisspade was a singleton. So Fontaine took the trumpfinesse and racked up his game.

How do you play it?This deal from the second final session of the

Board-a-Match Teams can be quite instructive.Board 22 ♠ 10 8 6 5Dlr: East ♥ J 10 3 2Vul: E-W ♦ Q 10 9 7

♠ K♥ 8 6 5 4♦ J 8 3♣ J 9 8 6 5

Let’s say that you arrive in 6♠. How do youplay in IMPs, matchpoints and board-a-match?

In IMPs it is important to make your contract –overtricks are minor. Finessing the queen gains onlyonce – when the king-10 are onside. So it isn’t worththe chance that the singleton king is behind the ace-queen. You should go up with the ace. In this case itdrops the king and you score up your slam.

Overtricks can make a big difference inmatchpoints, so it seems that you should finesse. You probably will have a lot of the field with youeven if you go down. But take a second look. Howmany pairs will get to the slam? A few but probablynot many. So it’s important to make your contractagain. You forego the finesse and cash the ace –unless you really need a big board.

Then there’s the board-a-match problem. If youthink your opponents will get to slam, thenfinessing could win the board if the king-10 areonside. Your opponents probably will do the samething, so you’ll probably have a push. But again, ifyou think your opponents will stop short of slam, play it safe and cash that ace.

Big winner, and he’s not even here

Tournament Directors Bob and Betty Bratcherwere in their hotel room Tuesday morning with thetelevision tuned to ABC’s “Live with Regis andKelly.”

Every day, the hosts select a postcard withsomeone’s name on it. That person is called, and ifhe or she can answer a question about the previousday’s show, the hosts spin a wheel to determine aprize.

On this particular day, hosts Regis Philbin andKelly Ripa had the lucky winner on the phone.

Bob wasn’t even in the same room as thetelevision, but when he heard the start of theinterview, he said, “Hey, that sounds like SteveSkinner.”

Sure enough, it was a bridge player well knownon the West Coast, a Huntington Beach resident theBratchers see at most tournaments.

Luckily for him, the wheel landed on “wild,”meaning he could choose from any of the prizes. Hepicked a Mediterranean cruise.

Smith stays in tune with new playersPriscilla Smith can still remember her days as

an eager, inexperienced player, ruffing herpartner’s ace. “We knew less than nothing,” shesays.

Being able to relate to new players is one ofSmith’s strong points as a tournament director –and one reason why she keeps returning to runnewcomer games at NABCs.

The Atlanta-based TD started out in Michigan, moving to the South in1974 with the company she worked for – Scientific Games, whichproduced the scratch-off lottery tickets. Smith was vice president in chargeof production.

One day in the fall of 1980, Smith’s office manager saw a newspaperad for an after-school program for learning bridge. They went and, beforethe lessons were finished, they were playing in a 99er game at a local club.

“I never played party bridge,” Smith says. “There’s too much talk andnot enough action.”

Five years after she got involved with duplicate, Smith recalls, she wasrecruited to run a newcomer game. At the time she was semi-retired. “Iguess I looked like a likely candidate,” she says.

She has worked with Edith McMullin, the creator of Easybridge! andnow runs her own bridge club, Ruff ‘n Sluff, on the north side of Atlanta.

“It’s been pretty wild,” she says, “but the new players have moreinteresting rulings, and when you come to their table they say thank you.”

Smith is now running 13 sessions a week at her club and drawing energyfrom the new players she meets. “I’m remembering the joy and fun I had whenI started,” she says. “It’s like seeing the game anew through their eyes.”

West leads the ♥A. This is a two-part question:(1) As West, what do you lead at trick two? (2) AsSouth (declarer), how do you plan to take eighttricks?

West leads a high heart, hoping partner has adoubleton. Partner plays the ♥6. Is this the start ofa high-low signal? In order to determine whetherpartner’s spot card is an encouraging signal, lookbeneath the card.

In other words, determine if any lower cardsare still at large. You have the 5 and 2, both lowercards, while dummy has the 4 and 3, also lowercards. Therefore, partner’s 6 is not a signal but hislowest heart.

West shifts to a diamond at trick two and Eastcashes the ♦K-A and plays a third diamond todeclarer’s queen.

So here you are; you’ve lost three tricks and aresure to lose two more, the ♣A and the ♥K. Youmust find the ♠Q to make your contract. Anyclues?

There are clues. Neither opponent could openthe bidding or overcall. Passed hands are presumedto hold fewer than 12 high-card points. Rememberthat number.

What have you seen point-wise so far? Westpresumably has the ♥A K while East has shown the♦A K. Each player has produced 7 HCP. What if

you know who had the ♣A?Whichever defender wins the ♣A will have

shown up with 11 HCP. He can’t have the ♠Q andpass originally (or on subsequent rounds ofbidding).

As it happens, West has the ♣A so you playEast for the ♠Q. If East had turned up with the ♣A,you would play West for the ♠Q. Elementary, mydear Watson.

Point to remember: Assume a passed hand hasfewer than 12 HCP. If a passed hand turns up with10 HP, assume his partner has any missing queen, king or ace. If a passed hand turns up with 11 HCP,assume his partner has any missing jack, queen, king or ace.

One technique for digging out an importantcard (the ♠Q in this case) is to locate a relativelyunimportant card (the ♣A). Knowing who has theunimportant card may be the key to locating theimportant card. It’s called a discovery play.

Triple celebration: Carl and Anita Gutschick ofArnold MD (near Annapolis) were happy onTuesday. They celebrated their 19th weddinganniversary by winning twice in the 299ergames.

Some tips for new duplicate players

Susan Freeman, who teaches bridge at theMiami Valley Bridge Center in Dayton OH,prepared these tips for her players who are newto duplicate:

• Count cards face down before sorting tomake sure all hands have 13 cards.

• Recount after sorting to make sure nocard is hidden.

• Decide your bid before you touch the bidbox so you don’t give extra information.

• Place bidding cards sequentially on thetable so all bids can be seen and reviewed.

• Bid in tempo to avoid givinginformation, which may result in partner beingbanned from further bidding.

• Ask about opponent’s bids only when itis your turn to bid.

• Direct questions to bidder’s partner.• For first lead, place your card face down

on the table and ask your partner if there areany questions. This will avoid leading out ofturn or being influenced by partner’s question.

• Play each card in tempo to avoid givingextra information to your opponent or yourpartner.

• Call the Director of the game if there isany question about any part of the game and lethim or her make any decisions or rulings. Thedirectors are there to help.

• Arrive early when playing with a newpartner to decide partnership agreements andfill out a convention card.

• Be sure your convention card iscomplete, available and visible during thegame.

Have fun!!!!!!!

Vanderbilt Knockout Teams). He has dozens ofbooks in print and he writes regularly for severalbridge magazines.

The list of regular partners Kantar has hadduring his career reads like a who’s who of bridgelegends: Marshall Miles, Bob Hamman, BillyEisenberg, Paul Soloway, Mike Lawrence and AlanSontag.

“I’ve had some great partners,” he says. “Ineeded them.”

Nowadays, Kantar has a completely differentfocus. He’s still into bridge big time, but instead ofstudying system notes and flying off totournaments, he spends hours each day writingabout bridge and adding to his web site(www.kantarbridge.com).

He doesn’t play bridge as seriously, he says, inpart because “I don’t have the patience to play intwo- and three-day events.”

His last regular partner in the “serious” eventswas Sontag. “I found that I wasn’t playing muchbetween NABCs,” Kantar says, “and I wasn’t assharp. I forgot the system at lot. It wasn’t fair toAlan.”

Kantar maintains an active life at home, playing paddle tennis five times a week, lecturingin various venues and going on cruises. He andYvonne play in the famous Home Games regularly, and he spends a lot of time at the computeranswering questions by e-mail.

Kantar says he gets a lot of inquiries about hisbook on Roman Key Card Blackwood, now in itsfourth version. “I’m still not sure I’ve got it right,”he says with typical modesty.

Yvonne bristles when Kantar denigrates hisown game. “You’re still as good as the otherplayers,” she protests.

He may not be playing at high levels any more, but Kantar hasn’t abandoned bridge. “I read all thetime,” he says. “It’s not like I’ve deserted thegame.” Kantar even reads bridge magazines inFrench and Italian – he studied languages at theUniversity of Minnesota.

Kantar may have stopped competing in theSpingolds and Reisingers, but he still knows what’sgoing on in the bridge world, and he can speak tochanges in the game. “It’s much moresophisticated,” he says. “There’s much less

guesswork in the bidding, but there’s also morememory work, and much more preempting.”

Kantar says it’s doubtful he will ever return tothe kind of play he once enjoyed, but his devotionto bridge has not diminished one iota. “I still lovethe game,” he says.
