Cherry Liqueur - Sangue Morlacco

indefinite

Luxardo’s second historical speciality after Maraschino Originale. It is a liqueur of marasca cherries (a sour cherry variety exclusively cultivated by Luxardo) - a variant of cherry brandy. It is obtained by the infusion of fermented marasca juice, matured for two years in oak vats. Luxardo cherry liqueur was renamed with the curious name of Sangue Morlacco (Morlacco blood) by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio in 1919, at the time of the Fiume military expedition, due to its dark red colour while “Morlacco” derived from the name of warrior people of the Dalmatian hinterland.

• Colour: dark red. •  Aroma: intense, inebriating perfume of marasca.• Taste: good body, very rounded on the palate. Quite different from normal cherry-brandies, both through the intensity of the cherry’s typical taste (here decidedly enhanced), and through the surprising expansion of the after-taste, which makes it priceless when combined with pure chocolate.

Round black bottle, with black capsule; the label shows D’Annunzio’s signature in connection with the liqueur’s “baptism”. The back label contains some serving suggestions and the required legal information.

• Neat, at room temperature or with ice, as an after dinner drink or meditation liqueur. In mixed drinks, in several coded international cocktails using cherry-brandy as an ingredient: Singapore Sling, Yale, Hollander Pousse Café, Cherry-brandy flip, Cherry Cobbler , etc. With berry fruits (raspberries, bilberries, blackcurrants, etc.).

• With pure dark chocolate.• With berry fruit syrup or over vanilla ice-cream.

Triplum® - Triple Sec Orange Luxardo®

Indefinite

Triplum is a classic “triple sec” distilled by Luxardo, rigorously faithful to the original production specifications since the first half of the 19th century. The “triple sec” name indicated, in the tradition of that century, a liqueur obtained from the distilled dried peels of three types of citrus fruits: mainly curaçao (a bitter orange of the Dutch Antilles, from the island of that name), together with sweet oranges and mandarins.Luxardo Triplum is obtained from the distillation of the three types of citrus fruit mentioned above with the separation of the ‘heads’ and ‘tails’. Only the ‘heart’, i.e. the central and best part, is sent to a second distillation. Other ingredients are included in the Luxardo recipe: dried orange flowers (zagara), European Penny-Royal, Vervain, and others. All this gives to the distillate a unique refined aroma, further enhanced by ageing in ash-wood white casks. After ageing for at least six months, the distillate is filtered, diluted and sugared. It is one of the few liqueurs obtained by distillation.

• Colour: trasparent.• Aroma: an intense nose of citrus fruits, with bitter notes of curaçao, tempered by the perfume of zagara.• Taste: smooth enveloping flavour of citrus fruits,a very well rounded and mature taste.

A patented square bottle in patented green glass, with rounded edges and with the Luxardo logoin relief.

• Neat or on the rocks after dinner.• In numerous international cocktails such asMargarita, Cosmopolitan, Daiquiri, Claridge, etc.• For classic confectionery uses. It combines perfectlywith chocolate.

As an antique tradition would have it, a tradition that to this day embraces all the countries of the Mediterranean basin, Italy too has its anise based national liqueur: Sambuca. It is a sweet but strong liqueur, containing essential oils obtained by steam distilling the seeds of star anise, which are soluble in pure alcohol. A concentratedsolution of sugar and other natural aromas are added to this. Already known and appreciated in ancient times for its therapeutic properties, the anise plant, originating from China, became widespread through the centuries in the countries of the Mediterranean coast, where it became widely used for preparing typical dishes and desserts. Above all, the oils obtained from anise were used by liqueur firms to produce a selection of liqueurs such as French Pastis, Spanish Anis, Turkish Raki and Greek Ouzo. The word Sambuca derived from the Arab word Zammut (= anise). The word “zammù” still exists in the Sicilian dialect, meaning an anise drink diluted with water.

A variation of the traditional Sambuca dei Cesari Luxardo. It is aromatized with liquorice, with a production recipe entailing several levels of successive infusions to blend the different ingredients. The predominant taste is star anise. However, it is combined with a new velvety sensation on the palate, with light spicy hints of cardamom and coriander, and an after-taste where the typical digestive aromas of liquorice predominate. It is neither an ordinary liquorice digestivo nor a commonplace coffee-sambuca.
