Suhanya Aravamudhan has had a recent article entitled ―Market Segmentation

of non-adopters of balanced scorecard using CHAID analysis‖ published in

Styles.‖ Journal of Multidisciplinary Research, Vol. 3, No. 1, Spring 2011, pp

65-80. ISSN 1947 (print); ISSN 1947-2919 (online).

For just a brief overview of Dr. McCann’s work, the abstract from the article

states: ―The purpose of this study was to determine whether organizations in

the United States are product or customer centered, as perceived by their mar-

keting managers. The research was designed to evaluate the levels of product

centered and customer centered behaviors in United States organizations. This

study included a target population of the 2009 Fortune 500 companies in the

United States. Product or customer orientation, and outcome factors, were

rated by marketing managers in these organizations using the Product Cen-

tered or Customer Centered Questionairre (V-1). Leadership orientation and

outcome factors were measured through direct report ratings of CEOs Multi-

factor Leadership Questionairre (MLQ 5X) (short form). The research ad-

dressed the following questions: Are organizations in the United States prod-

uct or customer centered, as perceived by their marketing managers? Is there

a correlation between product and customer centered tendencies and leader-

ship orientation and outcome measures of the multi-factor leadership ques-

tionnaire?‖

Foundations Corner

Hurry up and wait! That seems to be the way I

feel when submitting grant proposals. The nar-

rative and budget must be edited and polished,

attachments gathered and arranged in the exact

order requested. One final proof and then the

document gets mailed or electronically filed.

And then we wait, sometimes up to nine months

for a response. Foundation boards and program

officers will evaluate the myriad of applications

they receive to ensure that the organizations and

projects they are funding will be successful.

I recently served on a peer review panel for the

Tennessee Arts Commission. Lest you think that

sounds impressive, let me assure you that re-

viewing 25 grant applications is not that easy!

However, it was a great opportunity to compare

and analyze writing styles. Here are some key reminders for all grant seekers:

Answer the question! If the question is on evaluation, explain the evaluation

process.

Don’t just say that you do something, explain how you do it. If you say you

―empower girls‖ tell the reviewer how you do that.

Pay attention to detail. If you are cutting and pasting from one document

into another make sure your sentences actually make sense.

Follow directions. Font size does matter!

Spell out acronyms as close to the top of each page as possible. The re-

viewer should not have to guess what the ABC, DEF and XYZ programs

stand for.

Be concise. The reviewer should be able to easily follow your narrative.

So what? You may have a terrific program and a lot of participants but you

need to show the foundation that you make a difference, serve a need or

impact lives.

Be accountable. You will need to send the foundation a report on activities.

Keep good records of your expenses and track evaluations.

And all those things make for a well written grant proposal. Now we must

sit back and wait!
