Job Descriptions:

• for what they’re responsible • to whom they are responsible • what the basis of their job performance will be.

Good job descriptions indicate all of these functions in a compact manner.

Additionally, a good job description will allow a person who is unfamiliar with a function to understand it because the description will accuratelyreflect both the day to day and long term responsibilities of that function.

How should a job description be written? The best approach is to break it down into its functional parts:

• the job title• to whom the person holding the job reports• whom the person holding the job supervises• what the budget responsibility of the job is• what the job is accountable for

The general responsibilities of the job can be broken down by:

• budgeting/financial• staffing/personnel• particular responsibilities of the specific job• departmental management responsibilities

Your own job descriptions can—and should—reflect your own company’s organizational needs and tasks.

Job descriptions also provide direction to the company as a whole, and they help integrate various company and functional areas.

At some point, you will want to spend a good deal of time with these descriptions and become completely familiar with their structure and role.
