The Nucleus• Function: directs the activities

within the cell; contains DNA which determines which proteins to make.

• Location: central location in the cell

• Appearance: eyeball with nucleolus as the iris (colored part)

• Nuker was the boss at Celly’s, determining what type of burgers and how many to make

Page 2: Organelle info

Golgi Apparatus

• Function: modify, package, and export proteins

• Location: near the endoplasmic reticulum

• Appearance: stacked, folded pancakes

• Goldie added pickles and packaged burgers

Page 3: Organelle info

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER)• 2 types: Rough and Smooth• Function: carries materials

through cell• Location: connected to and

surrounding the nucleus• Appearance: folded

macaroni; Rough has ribosomes; Smooth does not

• Eddio-O moved burgers around.

Page 4: Organelle info

Ribosome

• Function: produce proteins• Location: on the rough ER and

throughout cell• Appearance: little dots; when

magnified it looks like a marshmallow

• Ribsy made the hamburgers

Page 5: Organelle info

Mitochondria

• Function: breaks down molecules to release energy; site of cell respiration

• Location: throughout cell• Appearance: • Closely associated with ATP,

the energy transfer molecule• Mito was responsible for the

energy at Celly's.

Page 6: Organelle info

Cell Membrane• Function: maintains homeostasis by determining what gets into or out of the cell

• Location: the outside boundary of the cell

• Appearance: a zipper or velcro with lint in it surrounding the cell

• Selma was the doorman at Celly’s

Page 7: Organelle info

Vesicle• Function: store, transport,

or digest cell products and waste

• Location: throughout the cell

• Appearance: ball filled with stuff

• Examples: – Lysosomes break down

molecules and digest old cell structures

– Central vacuole– Transport vesicles take

proteins from ER to Golgi• Lysol: cleaned Celly's,

garbage, recycling

Page 8: Organelle info

Chloroplast• Function: uses light energy to

make sugar (food) for plant cells• Location: throughout cells that

photosynthesize• Appearance: green jelly bean• Not a worker at Celly’s

Page 9: Organelle info

Cell Wall

• Function: protects and gives the cell structure

• Location: Outside the cell membrane

• Appearance: shell or peel surrounding the cell

• Found in plant cells but not animal cells

• not a worker at Celly’s

Central Vacuole

• Function: a special vesicle that stores water, nutrients or wastes in plant cells; animal cells have small vacuoles Location: when full, takes up most of the space in the cell

• Appearance: a large lake• Not a worker at Celly’s
