• Disabilities are one of the largest barriers which impact how people can

perform in the workplace

• Physical and mental disabilities can limit or exclude people with them from

conducting certain required work tasks

• The list of disabilities covered by the ADA is not all inclusive; a partial list:1. Caring for oneself 7. Walking2. Performing manual tasks 8. Standing3. Seeing 9. Lifting4. Hearing 10. Bending5. Eating 11. Speaking6. Sleeping 12. Breathing

• Creation of the ADA applies to federal, state, local governments, and private

businesses which must comply with the law

• The law allows reasonable accommodation to the disabled individual in the

workplace unless it becomes an unduly financial or safety burden

Discussion of Disability Diversity Laws

Page 4: Org545 critical thinking 1

• Disability discrimination laws are necessary to ensure equality in the

workplace; for example providing equipment which assists the blind and deaf

• Provisions must be made to wheelchair bound individuals such as installing

ramp ways, elevators, and automatic opening doors

• Discrimination is no longer tolerated regarding individuals with limited

immune systems, digestive, bowel, bladder, neurological, brain, respiratory,

circulatory, and reproductive functions

4

Analysis of Disability Diversity Laws

Page 5: Org545 critical thinking 1

• The Civil Rights Act of 1964 laid the foundation for protecting disability

discrimination by starting with race, color, religion, sex, and national origin

protection

• Further protections were created in 2008 with the ADA Amendments Act

which expands the scope of who is considered disabled

• The ADA continues to delve deeper into this topic and determine what is

considered disabled and what protections should be afforded

5

Creation of Disability Diversity Laws

Page 6: Org545 critical thinking 1

• Disability diversification laws have reduced discrimination and opened the work

field to disabled individuals who would not have tried previously

• The major changes the ADA has enacted is protection from disability

discrimination, created reasonable accommodation, and proper access
