You get hurt and you get bruised when that happens, sometimes severely. Sometimes you fail and sometimes you succeed but hopefully you learn from your failures and you will learn from the successes of others, as you strive for the final goal. CATHOLIC BIBLICAL SCHOOL

News from the Catholic Biblical School

Announcing the NEW Certificate in Biblical Studies at St. Thomas Seminary

The Hartford Office of Religious Education and St. Thomas Seminary have created an academic certificate program that allows students in the Biblical School to receive up to 18 undergraduate credits for successful completion of an accredited version of the CBS program.

By licensing this new certificate, the Connecticut Department of Higher Education affirms the mission of St. Thomas Seminary, in partnership with the Hartford Catholic Biblical School (CBS), to form adult students in understanding and interpreting the Bible for pastoral leadership. The program prepares individuals seeking deepened theological knowledge, both for personal spiritual enrichment and for preparation for ministry in the Church.

Students enrolled in the twelve member schools that make up the Hartford Consortium of Higher Education (including Univ. of Hartford, Univ. of Connecticut, Trinity College, St. Joseph College and Hartford Seminary) will soon be able to register for CBS courses (2011-12) through St. Thomas Seminary. Students currently enrolled in the Biblical School will have the opportunity, beginning this year, to receive credit for their CBS work. Course syllabi are available through the Office of Religious Education. A process for enrollment in the new certificate is currently under review.

Sometimes, you forget your final goal because of the many intermediate goals that occupy your time and attention. There is education, your job, your clothes, your cars, food, pets, vacations, recreational activities, etc. These things are not bad if they do not interfere with your ultimate goal. But, if they become an end in themselves, they can be destructive.

If a football player becomes so preoccupied with running and passing that he forgets to head for the goal line, than all his efforts are for nothing. And so it is with you and your life. All your activities, all of your education will amount to nothing if you forget the real purpose or goal of your life.

What we think about the most is what we treasure, that is where our heart is. That is what the Gospel says. Sometimes, football players lose their sense of direction, sometimes they run the wrong way and cross the wrong goal line. You never want to do that!

Today is as good a day as any for us to reevaluate our priorities and our direction in life. If we do it correctly then we will all see each other forever in heaven. ~Monsignor Michael J. Motta

Social Media Guidelines

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has developed a synthesis of best practices for using social media. The document includes guiding priciples, the Church and Social Media: an overview definitions, guidelines, establishing a site, social networking with minors, personal sites and how to report and monitor. These guidelines come at a time when these media present us with wonderful means of communication but, at the same time, it is especially necessary that we use social media in a proper manner. This includes web 2.0, blogs, micro-blogs, social networks (such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr and Linkedln), ministry websites and personal websites. For a copy of the guidelines, go to www.usccb.org/comm/social-media-guidelines.shtml.

Connecting Catholic Families with the Bible

A key to the success of any religious education program is the family – their connection to the parish and what happens in the home. The Center for Ministry Development will present “Connecting Catholic Families with the Bible”, a workshop for parish leaders. The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 20, 8:30-3:00 at the Archdiocesan Center in Bloomfield. Leif Kehrwald is the presenter. For more information or to download the program, go to www.usccb.org/prolife/programs.

High School Curriculum Webinar

The National Association for Lay Ministry and Ave Maria Press are presenting a free live webinar with Mike Amodei: “Applying the Bishops’ High School Curriculum to Parish Programs” on Tuesday, October 12, 3:00-4:00 pm EDT. Incorporating catechesis in a successful parish religious

education or youth ministry program for high school teens is at once a challenging and exciting endeavor. The challenge is to present essential content. The excitement is the ability to do so in a way that is flexible and diverse while incorporating elements like sacramental catechesis, spirituality, retreats, prayer and works of charity. The USCCB's Adaptation of a Curriculum Framework offers an outline of catechetical topics. This session explores ways to incorporate those topics into parish programs based on a trimester model that allows for comprehensive and flexible coverage to serve the varied and demanding schedules of both teens and adults. To join, go to http://www.avemariapress.com/ and click on Professional Development Series.

YOUTH MINISTRY

Catholic Youth Spectacular

God is Good! What a day! With 2036 participants on a cloudy but DRY day Jesse rocked the house. Young people took advantage of the time to reflect on the Luminous Mysteries at the painted rosary on the tennis courts, the quiet time in the chapel with the Stations of the Cross, and Reconciliation near the Mission “hula hoop” Rosary. The opening prayer was pretty impressive as we were surrounded by Saints –posters courtesy of the Notre Dame Vision Leadership Program – and the generous donations of flip-flops, shoes, toiletries, baby items and flower bulbs were presented. Thanks to all who helped sort them for distribution to St. Gerard Center, an orphanage in Haiti, and the Immaculate and South Park Shelters in Hartford. We have started to plant the bulbs on the grounds of the seminary! The saint posters marked the communion stations at Mass where Archbishop Mansell incorporated the Saint Scavenger Hunt and other activities into his homily. Check out our video at www.youtube.com/orehartford

The “set aside $5.00” campaign for the offertory collection netted $4064.21 for Catholic Relief Services. Thanks to everyone for their generosity. Of the 30 groups who marked their donation St. Mary/St. Robert Bellarmine in Windsor Locks had the biggest collection of $486.00 and the highest average at $6.94pp. Honorable mention goes to Blessed Sacrament-Waterbury, East Hartford Cluster, St. Joseph-Poquonock, St. Joseph-Canaan, and the Torrington Cluster for meeting or exceeding the $5.00pp challenge.

Planning has begun for the September 18, 2011 and September 30, 2012 Catholic Youth Spectaculars. Please return your evaluations or if you or your youth are interested in shaping future CYS, please let Shawnee know and a meeting date will be set.
