what it means to be a priest. Leader of a parish or church community? A dispenser of the sacraments?

A pastor?An important aspect of my experience ofthe priestly life is celebrating theEucharist . I find being a priest so many-sided thatit can't be defined satisfactorily interms of tasks and duties .

The Catholic Church counts ordination as one of the seven sacraments. Martin Luther protested against the special

status of the priest For Luther, the priesthood of believersconsists primarily in the free accesswhich everyone has to God. You don't need the special function of a priest

to reach God. Luther sees the priestly task ofbelievers as residing especially in praise of

God.

Priests are the bishop's 'co-workers' ,and participate in his priestly office. Theordination, or consecration, of a bishophas the same structure as that of apriest. This makes clear that this bishopis now included in thecollege( collegium )of bishops.

The rite of anointing is somewhatdifferent, too. Since his hands havebeen anointed already during hisordination as a priest, the bishop's head is anointed now.
