You are great, O God, and greatly to be praised. You have made us for yourself, and our

hearts are restless until they rest in you. Grant that we may believe in you, call upon

you, know you, and serve you, through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,

slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

Lord, you are good to all,

and your compassion is over all your works.

LESSON — Genesis 24:34–38, 42–49, 58–67

[Laban, Rebekah’s brother, received a visitor who said,] “I am Abra-

ham’s servant. The Lord has greatly blessed my master, and he has be-

come wealthy; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male

and female slaves, camels and donkeys. And Sarah my master’s wife

bore a son to my master when she was old; and he has given him all that

he has. My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for

my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live; but

you shall go to my father’s house, to my kindred, and get a wife for my

son.’

“I came today to the spring, and said, ‘O Lord, the God of my master

Abraham, if now you will only make successful the way I am going! I

am standing here by the spring of water; let the young woman who

comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, “Please give me a little water

from your jar to drink,” and who will say to me, “Drink, and I will draw

for your camels also”—let her be the woman whom the Lord has ap-

pointed for my master’s son.’

“Before I had finished speaking in my heart, there was Rebekah com-

ing out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the

spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’ She quickly let

down her jar from her shoulder, and said, ‘Drink, and I will also water

your camels.’ So I drank, and she also watered the camels. Then I asked

her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Na-

hor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and

the bracelets on her arms. Then I bowed my head and worshiped

the Lord, and blessed the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who

had led me by the right way to obtain the daughter of my master’s kins-

man for his son. Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my

master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so that I may turn either to the right

hand or to the left.”

And they called Rebekah, and said to her, “Will you go with this

man?” She said, “I will.” So they sent away their sister Rebekah and her

nurse along with Abraham’s servant and his men. And they blessed Re-

bekah and said to her,

“May you, our sister, become

thousands of myriads;

may your offspring gain possession

of the gates of their foes.”

Then Rebekah and her maids rose up, mounted the camels, and followed

the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way.

Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was settled in the Neg-

eb. Isaac went out in the evening to walk in the field; and looking up, he

saw camels coming. And Rebekah looked up, and when she saw Isaac,

she slipped quickly from the camel, and said to the servant, “Who is the

man over there, walking in the field to meet us?” The servant said, “It is

my master.” So she took her veil and covered herself. And the servant

told Isaac all the things that he had done. Then Isaac brought her into his

mother Sarah’s tent. He took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he

loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother’s death.

Holy wisdom, Holy word.

The yoke of discipleship

GOSPEL — Matthew 11:16–19, 25–30

The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

Glory to you, O Lord.

[Jesus spoke to the crowd saying:] “To what will I compare this genera-

tion? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one an-

other,

‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;

we wailed, and you did not mourn.’

For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a

demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a

glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom

is vindicated by her deeds.”

At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,

because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent

and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious

will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one

knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the

Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens,

and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I

am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For

my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM ELW p. 307

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Ever-living God, author of creation, we give you thanks for your gift of water that

brings life and refreshes the earth. We bless and praise you, for by water and the Word

we are cleansed from sin and receive everlasting life. Join us again this day to the saving

death of Christ; renew in us the living fountain of your grace; and raise us with Christ

Jesus to live in newness of life; for you are merciful, and you love your whole creation,

and with all your creatures we give you glory, through your Son Jesus Christ, in the uni-

ty of the Holy Spirit, now and forever.

Amen.

Almighty God, who gives us a new birth by water and the Holy Spirit and forgives us all

our sins, strengthen us in all goodness and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in

Virtual Vacation Bible School

with Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church

August 10–14

We can stay home, stay safe, AND Jesus' power will STILL pull us

through! ZOOM along the Rocky Railway with us August 10–14 daily at

10:00 a.m. With videos, songs, stories, skits, experiments, snacks, dis-

cussions and much more we'll engage in online faith focused fun and

exploration. Stay on track supply packs, including a t-shirt, music album,

and lots of fun surprises will be provided for each participant. Cost per

person is $30. Scholarships are always available if need-

ed. Opportunities for safe and distanced in-person gatherings may be

added as government and health guidelines progress and permit. Online

registration is now available at prlc.org.

Summer Strolls Begin TODAY Summer is here, and that means the return of picture-perfect Seattle weather and PRLC’s “Summer Stroll” weekly walking small group. This year’s theme is “Stay Healthy”, and thanks to the City of Seattle’s Stay Healthy Streets program, there are miles and miles of city streets that have been closed off to through traffic, leaving plenty of room for walkers to spread out and stay at a safe distance from one another. Each Sunday Evening at 6:00 pm in July and August we’ll gather at a different Stay Healthy street to explore our urban neighborhoods, enjoy the long summer evenings, and spend some time amongst our PRLC friends. As in past years, the walks will be fami-ly and dog friendly. Guest walkers are welcome, and this is a “drop in group,” so feel free to attend as few or many walks as you are able. With the constantly evolving COVID-19 restrictions, it will be important to get on the group mailing list so you receive the most up-to-date instructions in re: distancing and other potential protective requirements. You’ll also receive details about each walk, parking information, etc. The first loop walk will start/finish at 1st Ave NW and NW 73rd St, only a few blocks away from PRLC, this Sunday, July 5 at 6:00 pm. The walk will be 3.75 miles in length with no significant hills, almost all of which will be on Stay Healthy and/or "Neighborhood Greenway" streets. If you'd like to plan one of this summer's walks on a Stay Healthy Street, Greenway, and/or urban trail in your neighborhood, please let me know. Jan Hus, martyr, died 1415 Monday, July 6

Hus was a Bohemian (present-day Czech Republic) priest who spoke against abuses

in the church, and was seen by Martin Luther as his predecessor in the reforming

movement. He was found guilty of heresy by a council of the church, and burned at

the stake.

Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino, died around 540 Saturday, July 11

Benedict is known as the father of the Western monastic movement. Educated in

Rome, he went to live as a hermit, and eventually gathered a community of monks

around him. He wrote a rule for living in monasteries that is used by Benedictines and

adapted by others.

Fill our hearts with joy and delight. Give us what we need and enough to spare for works of mercy in praise of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Through Christ may glory, honor, and power be yours forever. Amen.
