George Frideric HANDEL (1685–1759)
Handel’s Finest Arias for Base Voice – 2
Christopher PurvesArcangelo, Jonathan Cohen
Christopher Purves is renowned for both the powerful sense of dramatic conviction he brings to everything he undertakes, and for a vocal technique which must be heard to be believed. From Handel’s early cantata to selections from Italian opera and English oratorio, this is a recital from a very special singer indeed.
Josef SUK (1874–1935)
Piano Music
Jonathan Plowright
The early works of Josef Suk channel something of the same life-affirming Czech spirit also characteristic of Dvořák, his teacher and father-inlaw. Jonathan Plowright makes a persuasive case for a composer whose music is at last emerging from the shadows.

Piano Concertos
Simon CallaghanBBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Ben Gernon
Just what the Romantic Piano Concerto series does best: three works unlikely to be encountered in the concert hall, in performances by artists who wholeheartedly—and justifiably—believe in the music. The high expectations of this series are amply realized in volume seventy-six.

Sir Richard Rodney BENNETT (1936-2012)
Concerto for Stan Getz; Symphony No. 2; Serenade for Small Orchestra; Partita
Howard McGillBBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, John Wilson
The recent partnership of John Wilson and BBC SSO on record reaches this second volume in their invigorating exploration of fascinating orchestral works by Sir Richard Rodney Bennett. Less well known than his widely famous film music (Murder on the Orient Express, Four Weddings and a Funeral, etc.), the orchestral works featured here display the versatility with which Bennett contradicted the dogma of musical modernism at the time of their creation (60s-70s), as well as an evolution of his compositional style towards a musical language that spoke to audiences everywhere in the world. This album features works that break down the false walls between two musical worlds and will appeal to anyone willing to explore, discover, or simply enjoy great music.
Come to Me in My Dreams Dame Sarah Connolly, Joseph Middleton
Dame Sarah Connolly’s exceptional, nocturnally inspired recital spans over 120 years of British song from Stanford to Turnage, and includes world premieres of two songs by Benjamin Britten. Marking Sarah Connolly’s Proms recital debut, the centenary of Sir Hubert Parry’s death, and British composers in general, who studied or taught at the Royal College of Music, this album is an astonishing collection not to be missed.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809)
Piano Sonatas, Volume 7
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet
Alongside an internationally acclaimed celebration of Debussy’s centenary, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet continues his sumptuous journey through Haydn, the instalments consistently praised for their intelligent approach and clear and vivid interpretations. But through Jean-Efflam Bavouzet’s playing, all these pieces are revealed in their purest essence and diversity, from the energetic, witty, and ironic to the graceful, tender, and intimate.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)
Three Piano Trios, Op. 1
Trio Goya: Kati Debretzeni, Sebastian Comberti, Maggie Cole
In this new Chaconne release, Trio Goya offers unique accounts of Beethoven’s early piano trios, revealing on period instruments and in the magical acoustic of the Britten-Pears Auditorium at Aldeburgh’s Snape Maltings the extraordinary range of colours and narratives that these pieces suggest. Beethoven’s Opus 1 features amongst Trio Goya’s central repertoire, played regularly in the UK’s most prestigious venues and beyond. After a recent Wigmore Hall concert, Early Music Today wrote that ‘Trio Goya sent us home spinning on the delights and laughter of early Beethoven. His piano trio opus 1 No. 1 frothed and bubbled down the finale’s theme, the musicians swept along by their own hell-for-leather, immaculately kept tempo.’

Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971)
Music for Violin, Vol. 2
Ilya GringoltsPeter Laul, Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia, Dima Slobodeniouk
The relationship between Igor Stravinsky and the violin didn’t get off to a promising start. Nevertheless there are in Stravinsky’s oeuvre a number of works featuring a solo violin, all of which have now been recorded by his compatriot Ilya Gringolts. The focus of the preceding volume was on the works for violin and piano, most of them Stravinsky’s arrangements of his own music for the stage. In this, Gringolts and pianist Peter Laul were praised for their performances. On the present disc, Gringolts combines duos – again in the company of Laul – with other genres, including Stravinsky’s most famous work for the violin: his Violin Concerto from 1931. In the concerto, as in the extract for solo violin and strings from the ballet Apollon musagète, Gringolts is supported by Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk.

One of Sweden’s leading composers, Rolf Martinsson enjoys a particularly close collaboration with the soprano Lisa Larsson. The two started working together in 2011, devising a soprano version of Orchestral Songs on Poems by Emily Dickinson, and Larsson has since performed Martinsson’s music at more than a hundred concerts to date.

Kalevi AHO (b. 1949)
Timpani Concerto; Piano Concerto No. 1
Ari-Pekka Mäenpää, Sonja FräkiTurku Philharmonic Orchestra, Erkki Lasonpalo, Eva Ollikainen
Kalevi Aho’s Timpani Concerto was commissioned by the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra for its timpanist Ari-Pekka Mäenpää. The soloist and composer worked closely together during the writing process, and the result is a concerto that explores the instrument’s full potential, from the melody opening the concerto, to the rhythmically compelling third movement. Composed almost 30 years earlier, Piano Concerto No. 1 reflects the composer’s interest at the time in numerology, and specifically in so-called cyclic numbers. The colourful and exciting work is, however, anything but cerebral.

Louis SPOHR (1784-1859)
3 Sonatas for Harp and Violin
Masumi Nagasawa, Cecilia Bernardini
At the time of writing Louis Spohr would have had in mind a so-called single-action pedal harp, of a similar type to the instrument heard on this disc. Soon to be replaced by the double-action pedal system, the single-action pedal harp was best suited for playing in flat keys. Spohr adopted a method of tuning the harp a semitone down, which had the added benefit of reducing the tension on the strings. The Sonatas Opp 113-115, in D and G major, therefore have harp parts notated in E flat and A flat major respectively. Because of its delicate construction and stringing, the single-action harp has a distinct silvery bell-like sound and these sonatas are among the last important works specifically written for it.

Carl Philipp Emanuel BACH (1714-1788)
The Solo Keyboard Music, Vol. 36‘für Kenner und Liebhaber’, Collection 6, Wq 61
Miklós Spányi
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach published the first collection in his series ‘for Connoisseurs and Amateurs’ in 1779, at the age of 65, and the sixth and final in 1787, a year before his death. In this collection, recorded here by Miklós Spányi, the fantasias and rondos continue to resemble each other in structure and in stylistic features. On this amply-filled disc, Miklós Spányi also includes four other works from Carl Philipp’s last decade, including the Sonata in G major, Wq 65/48, and the Variations Wq 118/9.

Soprano Edita Gruberova is undoubtedly one of today’s most well-known interpreters of colouratura opera singing, and especially of Italian bel canto. This album celebrates the ‘Slovak Nightingale’s’ 50th stage anniversary (Gruberova debuted on February 19, 1968 at the age of 21 as Rosina in Rossini’s ‘Barber of Seville’ at the National Theatre in her hometown of Bratislava), and presents nine recordings made between October 1983 and June 2000 at Bayerischer Rundfunk concerts.

There are few artists who have dominated a particular vocal field for so many years as the Swedish soprano Birgit Nilsson in the highly dramatic roles of Wagner and Strauss. That dominance has continued to resonate in the decades since her retirement in 1984 and the years since her death in 2005; indeed, it has been reinforced – one could even say her reputation has been immortalized – by numerous benchmark recordings. There are several things that are remarkable about this Tristan performance released here officially for the first time. It documents her Bayreuth debut in one of the aforementioned roles in which she was to shine.

Brett DEAN (b. 1961)
HamletGlyndebourne; Staged by Neil Armfield
Allan Clayton, Sarah Connolly, Barbara Hannigan, Rod Gilfry, Kim Begley, John Tomlinson, Jacques Imbrailo, David Butt Philip, Rupert Enticknap, Christopher Lowrey, London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Glyndebourne Chorus, Vladimir Jurowski
The world premiere recording of Brett Dean’s new opera based on Shakespeare’s best-known tragedy. ‘To be or not to be’; this is Hamlet’s dilemma, and the essence of Shakespeare’s most famous and arguably greatest work, given new life in operatic form in this original Glyndebourne commission. Thoughts of murder and revenge drive Hamlet when he learns that it was his uncle Claudius who killed his father, the King of Denmark, then seized his father’s crown and wife. But Hamlet’s vengeance vies with the question: is suicide a morally valid deed in an unbearably painful world? Dean’s colourful, energetic, witty and richly lyrical music expertly captures the modernity of Shakespeare’s timeless tale. Matthew Jocelyn’s inspired libretto is pure Shakespeare, adhering to the Bard’s narrative thread but abridging, reconfiguring and interweaving it into motifs that highlight the main dramatic themes: death, madness, the impossibility of certainty and the complexities of action.

Das Land des LächelnsStaged by Andreas Homoki; Recorded at the Opernhaus Zürich, June 2017
Piotr Beczala, Julia Kleiter, Rebeca Olvera, Spencer Lang, Cheyne Davidson, Martin Zysset, Philharmonia Zürich, Chor der Oper Zürich, Fabio Luisi
‘Always smile and always be cheerful, always satisfied, no matter what happens, smile in spite of your sorrows and a thousand aches and pains’, sings Prince Sou-Chong, thus introducing the fundamentally melancholic tone of Das Land des Lächelns (‘The Land of Smiles’), which even has a tragic ending in store. For the new production of this operetta, world class tenor Piotr Beczala returned to the Opernhaus Zürich as Sou-Chong. He has an equal partner in Julia Kleiter, who plays the role of Lisa. Fabio Luisi and Andreas Homoki also know that the genre of operetta requires particular care – which is why they assumed personal responsibility for this production. Homoki sets the plot in a Paris Variété theater from the 1920s, complete with show staircase and heavy curtains.

La fanciulla del WestStaged by Hugo de Ana; Recorded at the Teatro di San Carlo, Naples, December 2017

Triumphantly premiered at New York’s Metropolitan Opera on 10th December 1910, La fanciulla del West brought Puccini huge international success, even though the opera was never to attain the popularity of La bohème, Madama Butterfly and Tosca. It was Puccini’s first important attempt to free himself from the traditional patterns of operatic dramaturgy, making use of surprisingly modern musical language, as recent scholars have duly pointed out. This recording documents the production staged at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples at the opening of the 2018 season, with Hugo de Ana as director and set designer, and Juraj Valčuha as conductor, both praised by audiences and critics alike.
