SECOND SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 3 years

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Psalm 95:6

No matter who you are—a committed follower of Jesus, a person curious about Christianity, or a skeptic of spirituality—God is calling you to worship him. Wherever you are on the journey, we hope that you feel welcomed and at home. Perhaps you have never been to church (or not in a long time) and fear that you will not know what to do, how to act, or what to say. Be assured: God’s grace is for people just like you.

In our congregation, we follow an ancient liturgical pattern in our worship, drawing from the wisdom of Christians who have gone before us. Every Sunday we renew our commitment to God, offer him our prayers and gifts, confess our sins, receive forgiveness, hear from God’s word, and celebrate the Lord’s Supper together.

We find worshipping this way liberates us from our culture's obsession with that which is novel. We have also found worshipping this way to be deeply and profoundly formative over time. If you are not used to worship, or not used to worshipping in this manner, give yourself some time to get acclimated. We also make every effort to explain things as we go along.

Although we are committed to worshiping in this manner, we realize that the danger of liturgical worship is that it can become an empty ritual. We understand that, at its heart, worship is profoundly relational. It encompasses both our relationship with God and our relationship with one another. Every week we gather to meet with God, strengthen our ties to one another, and welcome strangers into our congregation.

For these reasons, although our worship is structured and informed by ancient practices, we also strive for it to be warm and personal.

In all of this, our great confidence is that God enjoys meeting with us.

Let us worship!

R E F L E C T I O N Q U O T E S

People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made. Joan Rivers

Never work just for money or for power. They won’t save your soul or help you sleep at night. Marian Wright Edelman

You won’t be liberated from deformation by new information. God doesn’t deliver us from the deformative habit-forming power of tactile rival liturgies by merely giving us a book. Instead, he invites us into a different embodied liturgy that not only is suffused by the biblical story, but also, via those practices, inscribes the story into our hearts as our erotic calibration, bending the needle of our loves toward Christ, our magnetic north. The Scriptures seep into us in a unique way in the intentional, communal rituals of worship. If we want to be a people oriented by a biblical worldview and guided by biblical wisdom, one of the best spiritual investments we can make is to mine the riches of historic Christian worship, which is rooted in the conviction that the Word is caught more than it is taught. The drama of redemption told in the Scriptures is enacted in worship in a way that makes it “sticky.” Study and memorization are important, but there is a unique, imagination-forming power in the communal, repeated, and poetic cadences of historical Christian worship. James K.A. Smith, You Are What You Love

Tithing is a form of prayer. We say to God, 'I give you my tithe to acknowledge that all that I have belongs to you. Put your blessing upon the rest and make it sufficient to meet all my needs.' Bishop Stephen Scarlett

Let the one who is wise heed these things and ponder the loving deeds of the Lord.

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service.

Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself―today and every day.

Charles Wesley, 1739 Carl Gläser, 1828 arr. L. Mason, 1839

Seated L E C T I O S A C R A Joshua 3:7-17

The Lord said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. And as for you, command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” And Joshua said to the people of Israel, “Come here and listen to the words of the Lord your God.” And Joshua said, “Here is how you shall know that the living God is among you and that he will without fail drive out from before you the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Hivites, the Perizzites, the Girgashites, the Amorites, and the Jebusites. Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is passing over before you into the Jordan. Now therefore take twelve men from the tribes of Israel, from each tribe a man. And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be cut off from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap.”

So when the people set out from their tents to pass over the Jordan with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, and as soon as those bearing the ark had come as far as the Jordan, and the feet of the priests bearing the ark were dipped in the brink of the water (now the Jordan overflows all its banks throughout the time of harvest), the waters coming down from above stood and rose up in a heap very far away, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan, and those flowing down toward the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, were completely cut off. And the people passed over opposite Jericho. Now the priests bearing the ark of the covenant of the Lord stood firmly on dry ground in the midst of the Jordan, and all Israel was passing over on dry ground until all the nation finished passing over the Jordan.

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! I N T E R L U D E

“Lectio Sacra” means “sacred reading.” It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God’s word.

Standing C O N F E S S I O N O F S I N

Father in heaven, forgive us for how we have sinned with our money.

For orienting our lives around it, instead of around you. For viewing it as our own, instead of as coming from you. For running away from it, instead of handling it wisely. For spending it only on ourselves, instead of giving it to your kingdom.

Forgive us our sins and soften our hearts through your generosity. May your grace make us generous people. (You are invited to confess your sins silently)

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ.

2

Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection and worship.

R E C E I V I N G O F G R A C E Adapted from Psalm 94

Unless the Lord had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. When I said, “My foot is slipping,” Your love, O Lord, supported me. The Lord has rescued us through His Son. Know that in Christ we are forgiven, accepted cherished. Amen. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you!

Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection.

P R A Y I N G T H E P S A L M S Psalm 107:1-9, 33-37 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.

He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield.

Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen.

Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

O F F E R I N G M U S I C R e l e n t Lyrics provided for reflection below.

If I gain the world, would it be worth the price? To work these hands to death and not be satisfied If every effort bought another sleepless night I'd be so tired I have strived enough to know that this divide Could never be repaired through countless second tries Still I stay the course avoiding what is right Now I'm so tired I'm just so tired

[Chorus] I relent There is nothing for me here You can have it all this life is not my own You give life That is worth the loss of mine I surrender all I have to follow you

I have traded cherished truth for worthless lies Raging through the earth for treasure I couldn't find Wallowed in the mud for nothing but my pride And I'm so tired I'm just so tired

[Chorus]

I just want to live in peace But I'm struggling to believe That letting go will bring me peace Can I sit here at your feet? Cuz' this is where I belong I can feel it in my soul You see i'm right where I belong And I know that I belong I know that I belong I know that I belong

[Chorus]6

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven’t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church.

If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you.

Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line.

Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen.

Deacons' Fund Offering Sunday, Nov. 26th @ 9 AM The Grace Diaconate serves those who have financial need in our church body through the benevolence ministry. The funding for the benevolence ministry comes in part from periodic designated collections taken during the year. At our worship service on Nov 26th, all giving during the service will be devoted to the Deacons' Fund in thanksgiving for the grace made possible by Jesus Christ. Please consider giving toward sharing one another's burdens. If you are not able to be present during this service, you can mail a check to the church office (400 E Pine St, Suite 215) and designate it to the Deacons' Fund or give online and designate it to the Deacon’s Fund.

Friends of Youth Thanksgiving Drive Service Opportunity Everyone is welcome to join Parish 11 in a service opportunity with Friends of Youth this November. The parish is collecting specific food items for Thanksgiving baskets that Friends of Youth will be delivering to families. On Friday, Nov. 17 from 5-7pm, volunteers will meet at Friends of Youth in Kirkland to package items into baskets. Children are welcome. If you would like to donate items, there is a list of requested items available at the Connection Center and there is a box in the lobby where you can deposit the requested items. If you would like to join in on the packaging work day, please contact a Parish 11 (Eastside) friend, or Jennifer Spaith at [email protected] for details. Grace App We are happy to announce that Grace now has a smartphone app that is both iPhone and Android compatible. On the app, you will be able to give on-line, listen to sermons, keep up with what’s happening at the church and more. To download the app, visit the App Store or Google Play, search for “Grace Church Seattle”, and click download.

WAYS TO GET CONNECTED

Parish fellowships What is a parish? A parish is a neighborhood or collection of neighborhoods that are proximate to each other. Each parish has a parish captain who is responsible for coordinating quarterly parish fellowships for the people who live within the parish. These fellowships are a great opportunity for new people to connect with others from Grace and for regular attendees and members to get together for an informal time of fun and fellowship together. To be added to your parish e-mail list, contact your parish captain (see page 11) or e-mail our Ministry Administrator, Catie Stroethoff at [email protected].

Community groups What is a community group? A community group (CG) is a small group of up to 12 adults plus children that commit to journey together for the year (September-May) for the purpose of growing in relationship with God and each other. Community groups are located throughout the city, and are hosted and led by various members of the Grace community. CGs spend time in some form of study/discussion and prayer as well as fellowship. To see the list of available groups, please see page 12. If you have questions about community groups, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

See our full calendar at graceseattle.org/events/calendar Sign up for our email list by emailing [email protected]

Grace Kids Fall Open House November 12th @ 10:30 AM (During Christian Formation Hour) The Grace Kids Open House is a wonderful opportunity to hear from teachers and leadership about what the Lord is doing amongst our little ones every Sunday! Part of our goal at Grace is to not only educate our children in the ways of the Lord, but to also foster strong inter-generational relationships between adults and children, beyond the parent-child dynamic. We encourage youth, singles, couples, and elders to attend our showcase at 10:30 AM to hear, discuss, and observe classes in session. Thank you to all teachers and volunteers for providing this opportunity to the congregation! If you have any questions, contact Nicole Herring at [email protected], or Pastor Jason at [email protected].

Christmas Pageant Registration Open Grace's 2017 Christmas Pageant will be held Dec. 17th at 10:30am. Children ages 5 and up are invited to join the fun and adventure of putting on the pageant this year. This concludes our series on discovering and expressing our spiritual gifts and we hope it will provide a tangible way to connect our gifts with specific needs within our congregation and our neighborhoods. Since our congregation draws from a wide geographic area, the parish model provides a way for people to connect with people who live near them. There is the greatest opportunity for organic connection and time together when people are proximate to one another. We want to establish and grow community groups within each parish, and we also hope that quarterly parish fellowships provide a natural way to reach out to neighbors who aren’t part of the Grace community. If you are uncertain which parish your neighborhood is in, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

Community groups are places of care and community where we learn more about living the Christian life together. Each group is unique and has its own "personality," and yet all groups are focused on growing in relationship with God and with each other. Groups meet on different nights in various neighborhoods around the city, and include time for fellowship, study and reflection, and prayer together. If you have any questions about community groups, contact Debbie (Smith) Tacke at [email protected].

S E R M O N T E X T

Matthew 6:19-34

[19] “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. [21] For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

[22] “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, [23] but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

[24] “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

[25] “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? [26] Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? [27] And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? [28] And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, [29] yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. [30] But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? [31] Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ [32] For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. [33] But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

[34] “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
