Thought for Meditation: Johns Gospel speaks of rebirth and new life. Both are required to enterGods kingdom. Rebirth occurs as one is baptized, receiving Gods spirit. New life is received throughthe gift of Gods Son. It is time to put the old order aside in order that Gods will may be known.Baptism and repentance remain points of departure for life lived in faith.

*Call to Worship From John 3

No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and spirit.Truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen.Everyone who believes in the Son of God may not perish but have eternal life.

God sent not the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be savedthrough Him.Let us worship God!

    Call to Confession

Remember that our Lord Jesus can sympathize with us in our weaknesses, since in every respect hewas tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with boldness approach the throne of grace thatwe may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Let us confess our sins against God andour neighbor.

Prayer of ConfessionYou call us to become pilgrims, to follow you in a journey of faith. We would find it easier tofollow when not so much is at stake. But you promise that you will be with us and that ourneeds will be met. We cling to our possessions, trusting in them for security. You lead us intounfamiliar places, asking that we trust in your will. O God, your way is challenging when wechoose to be complacent. You make great demands; we are anxious and uncertain. Havemercy upon us and forgive our hesitant steps toward promise.

    ~ Silent prayers ~

    The Gift of Forgiveness

For the sake of the joy that was set before him Jesus endured the cross, disregarding its shame, andhas taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. Our faith depends on him from start to finishand he unceasingly intercedes on our behalf. Therein abides our hope and our assurance.

Thanks be to God! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

*PeaceSince God has forgiven us in Jesus Christ, let us forgive one another.

The peace of Christ be with you all.And also with you.

Worshippers are invited to greet one another with the words,The peace of Christ be with you.

Anthem God So Loved the World John Strainer

God so loved the world, that God gave the only begotten Son, that whoso believeth in Him should not

Affirmation of Faith From the Scots Confession CHAPTER VI The Incarnation of Christ Jesus

When the fullness of time came God sent his Son, His eternal wisdom, the substance of His ownglory, into this world, who took the nature of humanity from the substance of a woman, a virgin,by means of the Holy Ghost. And so was born the just seed of David, the Angel of the greatcounsel of God, the very Messiah promised, whom we confess and acknowledge to beEmmanuel, true God and true man, two perfect natures united and joined in one person.

    ABOUT THE SCOTS CONFESSION

Three documents from the period of the Reformation are included in the Book of Confessions, eachoriginating in a different country: Scotland, Germany, and Switzerland. These three centers of theReformation remain significant in Reformed and Presbyterian thought to this day. The ScotsConfession was written at a turning point in the history of the Scottish nation. When the Queen RegentMary of Guise died in her sleep in 1560, the Protestant nobility of Scotland was able to secure Englishrecognition of Scottish sovereignty in the Treaty of Edinburgh. To the Scots, this favorable conclusionto the civil war with Mary's French-supported forces represented a providential deliverance.

The Scottish Parliament, having declared Scotland a Protestant nation, asked the clergy to frame aconfession of faith. Six ministers, including John Knox, completed their work in four days. In 1560, thedocument was ratified by Parliament as "doctrine grounded upon the infallible Word of God."Beginning with a pledge of unconditional commitment to the triune God who creates, sustains, rules, and guides all things, the first eleven chapters of the Scots Confession narrate God's providential actsin the events of biblical history. The kirk (church) of the present and future is continuous with the kirk ofGod's people going back to Adam. While affirming that the Bible is the norm by which the kirk judgesitself, the Scots Confession also sees the Scriptures as a sacred history in which the present daychurch, through the Holy Spirit, participates until the end of time. God's providential deliverance is acontinuing, not merely a past, reality.

The Scots Confession sets forth three marks of the true and faithful church: "the true preaching of theWord of God," "the right administration of the sacraments of Christ Jesus," and "ecclesiastical discipline. . . whereby vice is repressed and virtue nourished." "Cleave, serve, worship, trust" are key words inthis document. As a call to action in a turbulent time, the Scots Confession reflects a spirit of trust and acommitment to the God whose miraculous deliverance the Scots had experienced firsthand.
