DIRECTOR’S NOTE

As a child, I loved to read Dr. Seuss. It is now a joy to share the beloved books with my Grand-son, Aksel. In May 1954 Life Magazine published a report on illiteracy among school children, which concluded that children were not learning to read because their books were boring. Nine months later, Geisel completed The Cat in the Hat, and beginning readers took fl ight as they were able read the simpli-fi ed vocabulary. Giesel’s clever illustrations and whimsical rhyming stories take us all to strange places full of bright colors and imaginary creatures. The amazing genius of Ted Giesel (Dr. Seuss) helped us all think in new ways, to fl y to the stars and back again. This production gives opportunity to bring some of his most beloved characters to life on the stage. Seussical has been a heartwarming experience, made more so by the positive, collaborative participation of everyone involved in the making of this production. Sit back and enjoy!

ACT IA boy fi nds a strange-looking hat on stage, belonging to The Cat in the Hat, who acts as narrator and pulls the boy into a wild, imaginary world..

In the Jungle of Nool, where Horton the Elephant is bath-ing, he hears a strange noise coming from a speck of dust. He rescues the speck and places it on a clover to guard. The other animals mock him, except for Gertrude McFuzz, who admires his compassion and begins to fall in love with him. Horton hears the mysterious voice again, which be-longs to the Mayor of “Who”, a dust-speck planet covered with microscopic inhabitants called Whos. The Cat in the Hat zooms in on the dust speck as the Whos are revealed. The Mayor and the Whos reveal their planet is so small and fragile they are constantly threatened with death, and beg Horton to help protect them. His resolve strengthened, Horton promises he will guard the dust speck.

The mayor’s son, Jojo, is scolded for thinking “thinks”, imaginary thoughts which disrupt his school classes and anger his teachers. Although he tries not to think thinks, he starts to imagine his tub is McElligot’s pool where his thinks soon spiral out of control and cause time to fl y. Frustrated, the Mayor and his wife agree to “lay down the law” but are unsure of just how to discipline their son. After receiving a brochure, they decide to send him to a military school run by a misguided warmonger named General Genghis Khan Schmitz, who is preparing to go to war with those who eat their bread butter side down.

Horton meets Jojo, with whom he bonds as a fellow social outcast. The next day, Gertrude (whose feelings for Horton are still strong) laments that her tail only has one feather, believing its sorry sight is the reason Horton is not noticing her. Mayzie La Bird, whose tail is enormous and dazzling, advises Gertrude to obtain pills from Doctor Dake, which Mayzie promises will make her tail “almost as amazing” as hers. Gertrude is so excited about her tail, she overdoses.

Horton is ambushed by a group of mischievous monkeys, the Wickersham Brothers, who steal the clover and give it to an eagle, Vlad Vladikoff, who drops it into a large patch of identical clovers. The Cat in the Hat freezes the action and delivers an ironically cheery tune about how fortunate the audience is not to be the Whos. Horton looks for the clover, while Gertrude tries to attract his attention. Horton, however, is so intently focused on his mission he does not notice her, and a dejected Gertrude retreats to take more pills. Mayzie LaBird, who has just been abandoned by her lover and left with an egg, interrupts Horton’s search and begs him to sit on it so she can take an afternoon off. Hor-ton reluctantly agrees, and Mayzie fl ies away, never to re-turn. As winter approaches, Horton is captured by hunters. Gertrude makes an attempt to rescue him, but the size and weight of her new tail prevents her from fl ying.

ACT IIHorton is transported to New York City and auctioned off to the circus, lamenting his sorry state. Mayzie is laz-ing about in Palm Beach, where she admits she tires of the monotony of sunbathing. She decides to attend the Circus, where she reunites with Horton and the egg. Horton pleads for her to take it back, but Mayzie refuses, and gives the egg to Horton to keep forever. Alone with the egg, a sorrowful Horton vows to nurture it himself and sings a lullaby about a magical world called Solla Sollew

On Christmas Day, Jojo and his fellow cadets are deployed to fi ght in the Butter Battle. Jojo fi nally confronts General Schmitz, declaring his belief in the immorality of the war and deserting the army. However, he causes an explosion which is thought to have destroyed him. Jojo’s parents learn of his alleged death at the Christmas Pageant. The Cat in the Hat, however, reenacts the scene, so the audience sees that Jojo is actually alive, but lost in some dark place far from Whoville. Jojo forgives the Cat in the Hat for his perceived offenses, taking his advice and trusting his hunches to lead him back home. He and his parents share a joyful embrace.

At the Circus, Gertrude reappears and frees a bewildered Horton. She has swallowed her pride, got her tail feathers plucked, and fl ew across the world to rescue Horton and fi nd the Whos’ clover. Ecstatic that the Whos are fi nally safe, Horton begins to fall in love with Gertrude. However, their happiness is crushed as the Sour Kangaroo and the Wick-ersham Brothers drag Horton back to the Jungle of Nool, and put him on trial for the crimes of “talking to a speck of dust and loitering on an egg”. Gertrude and Horton make a stand at the trial, but in vain; Yertle the Turtle orders the clover to be boiled in a kettle of beezlenut oil. Aghast, Hor-ton begs the Whos to shout to prove their existence, which nearly fails until Jojo comes up with a “think”: the word “YOPP” whose peculiar sound is just enough to reach the jungle creatures’ ears. The court acquits Horton and the Sour Kangaroo repents, swearing that she will help Horton protect the Whos. In Whoville, Jojo is honored as “Thinker Non-Stop” and fi nally wins the appreciation of his parents.

The egg hatches, and a tiny “Elephant-Bird” emerges. Hor-ton panics, realizing he can’t handle fl ying progeny, but Gertrude promises him that as Horton “teaches him earth”, she will “teach him sky”. They agree to raise the child to-gether. The Cat in the Hat sums things up

Rebecca Albertson (Bird Girl) has been in four musicals at Tualatin High School, and has also been in choir all four years. She intends to continue participatin in musical theater in college. She would like to thank her parents for the constant support they give and for all the help they’ve put into these produc-tions.

Bryn Aszman (Bird Girl) plays one of the Bird Girls in Seussical, and played a chorus member last year in Les Miserables. Choir has been an amazing experience for Bryn, a ma-jor highlight of high school. Bryn plans to study nursing and Spanish in college, and to continue singing as an alto in choirs. She would like to thank her family and boyfriend for their continual support, and for always putting up with her harmo-nizing with all sounds and singing musical soundtracks 24/7.

Amanda Baldwin-McIver (Bird Girl), from elementary school to middle school and fi nally her senior year in high school, has come to

know that choir has and always will be a part of her. From participating in cadet choir, treble choir, and now concert choir, she has found a fam-ily in this connective group. She participated in Grease, Les Mis-erables, and now Seussical! After being a chorus member for her fi rst two musicals, she decided to go for a larger role. Being a Bird Girl has been one of her favorite experienc-es, because she has been able to do something different. After this year, she hopes to go to school locally to study pediatric dentistry and con-tinue singing and participating in school productions. Amanda thanks Kroeger for helping her throughout the years, and most importantly, her family for always keeping her chin up and making sure she works hard. She never gave up, and now she is extremely ecstatic to be a part of something so jolly, so electrifying, and so magnifi cent!

Jessica Blank (Jungle Critter) is in her fi rst musical production. Seus-sical has been an amazing experi-ence. She was in Tualatin High School’s production of “Zap” last year. She has never done choir or any other classes related to per-forming. She plans on going to college for Biomedical Engineer-ing and Pre-medical and eventually getting her doctorate in Biomedical engineering and becoming a doc-tor. She would like to thank all her family for putting up with her busy schedule and her over committing herself, as well as all her friends and those who made this production possible. Thanks!

Courtney Coons (Cindy Lou Who) has been in choir since pre-school. She enjoys being Cindy Lou Who, and just being in the musical alone is a great experience. She wants to thank everyone who is in or who has helped in Seussical. Everyone has been amazing.

Lainie Davis (Mayzie LaBird) is a senior here at Tualatin High School. She began her involvement in mu-sic at a very young age, singing around the campfi re and present-ing percussion concerts using pots and pans. She was involved in the pit orchestra for Les Mis last year, playing fl ute, and is delighted to fi -nally grace the stage in dress, heels and false lashes as the fl amboyant Mayzie LaBird. She hopes this role will be a stepping stone to other roles as even more exotic animals in the future. Also, she would like to … squirrel!

Brian Faris (Horton) feels that Se-ussical is extremely fun. He great-ly enjoys getting to lumber around like an elephant when he plays the role of Horton. He hasn’t had any other major roles, but loved being a

greaser and a revolutionary student of France. His choir experience has always been a great one, with a lot of laughs and memories. Brian would like to thank everyone who makes Seussical possible.

Nathan Gardner (Wickersham) plays the part of one of the Wick-ershams, the monkey brothers. He thinks that Seussical is a really fun musical to perform, that it gives teenagers a chance to relive some of their childhood, and that it has some really great music. Though this is his fi rst year performing in the school musical, Nathan has been a part of choir since freshman year. Choir has been an awesome experience for him, and has al-lowed him many opportunities not offered anywhere else. He would like to thank all the people who have helped him along to learn his part in the show. Dan Murphy and Kim Kroeger have done a lot to make this show possible. Nathan plans to attend college next fall and study engineering, though he plans to be involved in the choir program wherever he ends up.

Morgan Gerke (Bird Girl) is a senior this year at Tualatin High School, and is thrilled to be a part of Suessical the Musical! This is her 5th musical! Other musicals Mor-gan has been in are The Music Man, Once Upon A Mattress, and last years Les Miserables. This is Mor-

gan’s 6th year in choir, and her fi rst year as a TuHS Crimsonnaire. Next year, Morgan is planning to attend Linfi eld College. Music has been, and will always play, a huge role in Morgan’s life, whether it’s singing, playing the guitar, or just jamming out to a song on the radio. Morgan would like to thank her family for loving and supporting her through-out her life. In loving memory of her Papa, Morgan would like to give a special thanks to her grandfa-ther Robert E. Holden who attended every event, from musicals to soc-cer games, and for always being so incredibly supportive.

Rachel Gifford (Mrs. Mayor) is a junior at Tualatin High School. She has been performing in theatre since elementary school and absolutely loves to entertain. Rachel also loves to sing and do facial yoga. Her fa-vorite pose is the lion. This is her second year in Crimsonnaires. She is thrilled to be performing in Se-ussical this year and would like to thank Dan Murphy, Mrs. Kroeger, and Mama Haag for all the hard work they have put into the show. She would also like to thank her family, especially her Mom and Dad, for all their love and support, and most important, her Heavenly Father. Psalm 89:1-2.

Jon Hamilton (The Lorax) is a happy guy who always has a smile. He was in Beauty and the Best

(Bartender/Cheese Grater), Grease (Greaser), and Les Miserables (Bar-tender/Townsman). Jon has been in choir for four years. Jon loves being on stage, but what he enjoys most is the work behind the scenes and how a performance is all put to-gether. At home, rather than watch movie DVDs, he watches the DVDs of special features, studying every way of how things are done. Each year, Jon goes to Hollywood to at-tend studio tapings and visits studio back lots to get more experience. Jon’s plans are to work with a local theater group, while taking classes at PHAME, PCC, and the Art Insti-tute to get ready to go to Perform-ing Arts Studio West and study pro-duction work. Jon loves Seussical, loves watching every aspect of the production, and remembering all the “Cat in the Hat” stories. Jon would like to thank Mrs. Kroeger, Mom, Dad, Cristopher, Calli, and Miss Kate for all their support.

Payton Imbach (General Schmitz) has been in choir since freshman year, and since then has improved tremendously. He is currently in four classes with Mrs. Kroeger and sings a lot every day. Payton got the role of General Schmitz and Judge Yertle the Turtle.

Shivali Kadem (Bird Girl) is very new to musical theater, Seussical only being her second production.

She has been in choir since her fresh-man year of high school. This year, she is in Concert Choir and Crim-sonnaires. She would like to thank her parents for being so supportive of her musical endeavors. Although she does not plan on studying music next year, she looks forward to per-forming as often as she can!

Lan Kuan (Mayor of Whoville), quite frankly, has no idea how he got his role as Mayor of Whoville. Three years of choir had not pre-pared him for such a task, and will likely not prepare him to major in Secondary Education at Linfi eld College in the future. However, Lan gratefully thanks Kroeger, Dan, and Mama Haag for their enormous contribution, not to men-tion Mr Garrett and Mrs Roberts for their tireless laboring. And though he was sprung with the unexpected responsibility of a political position and involuntary parenting, he has a good feeling that Seussical will be a colorful mass of controlled chaos.

Blake Lovin (Wickersham) is play-ing the part of Wickersham 2. (De-spite his pleading, he did not receive a real name.) Blake was told he was typecast; he hopes this is a compli-ment. This is fi rst performance, and he hopes you enjoy it.

Jeremy Lund (JoJo) is in 4th grade at Bridgeport Elementary School. He has taken part in all of his school programs, with a small solo song in 2nd grade. He has sung in his church’s children’s choir from age 4 through 2nd grade. Seussical is Jeremy’s fi rst major production and he is loving it. He thinks Seussi-cal is a story that lets the audience imagine wild and wonderful things along with the cast. Jeremy would like to thank his music teacher, Mrs. Lewis, for telling him about this great opportunity.

Rebecca McDade (Sour Kanga-roo), ever since she sprouted her fi rst copper curl, has been an avid participant in both music and stage. Her stage experience consists of shows both professional and recre-ational in both the US and Ireland. This is the second musical she’s done with Tualatin High School. Off stage, Rebecca enjoys jamming with her friends and her guitar, as well as playing the piano. This year is her second year as a Crimsonnaire. She wishes to send her thanks to her family, for supporting her in most everything she does, Kroeger, for being fantastic on all sorts of levels, and all the people involved in this wonderfully whimsical show, for just being über nifty.

Nicole Meyer (Thing 2)

Conor Peick (Wickersham Brother) is in his senior year of high school and has been in choir all four years, as well as Crimsonnaires for two years. This is the fi rst musical Conor has ever done, and the expe-rience has been “stressful but fun”. After graduation, Conor plans on going to college and looks for-ward to learning to play guitar and continuing to sing recreationally. Conor would like to thank his older brother and his parents for getting him into choir. S’GO DAWGS.

Katie Platter (Gertrude McFuzz) is a senior at Tualatin High School. Seussical is her fourth musical here; she was a chorus member in Beauty and the Beast, Patty Simcox in Grease, and Eponine in Les Mis-erables. Outside of school, she has performed in Fiddler on the Roof as Hodel at the Broadway Rose teen workshop. Katie has a passion for musical theater and is excited to perform in more productions. She would like to thank her parents, Dan, and Mrs. Kroeger for all their support over the last four years.

Axel Ramirez (Who) is playing as a Who and a Fish! The musical is so much fun, and I am enjoying all the people and their roles. My philosophy is “always choose your dreams, the sky’s the limit, and al-ways believe in yourself.” I love spicy and sour candy. I just love CANDY! My favorite food is Thai, it is the BOMB!

Joelle Self (Bird Girl) is thrilled to be appearing as a Bird Girl in Suessical! She absolutely loves the upbeat music and energy of this show and is glad to be a part of it. This will be Joelle’s fourth musi-cal, as she started in eighth grade with Twality’s Cinderella, and has performed in Grease and “Les Mis-erables at Tualatin High! She’s also been in choir for 6 years now, and is having a blast this year in both Concert Choir and Crimsonnaires! She’d like to thank Kroeger for her incredible dedication to her stu-dents, and for putting her heart and soul into everything she does. Joelle would also like to give a shout out to her Grandma Pam, Grandma Di-ana, and her Mom for being so sup-portive. Joelle is excited to be see-ing you all at next year’s musical!

Noah Shumway (Cat in the Hat) is a junior this year, and a second year Crimsonnaire. He enjoys act-ing and singing and is very excited to play the part of The Cat in the Hat. Noah enjoys rhyming words in his free time. “Thankfully, Seus-sical rhymes so its very fun to re-hearse,” says Noah. He would like to thank his parents Holly and Pete Shumway for supporting him and designing the marvelous trees you see on stage.

Caleb Taylor (Grinch) is a fresh-man this year. He worked as a spe-cial effects director for Les Misera-bles last year. He wants to thank his parents and his brother and isster for getting him interesting in choir and the musicals, and for support-ing him in high school.

Erica Toyer (Thing 1) is a junior in concert choir this year. She has participated in Grease and Les Mis the past two years. Choir is her fa-vorite class by far. She would like

to thank her parents for supporting her in choir and the musicals, and Kroeger and Dan for all the hard work they do. She is excited to be able to participate in such a lively musical and hopes you all enjoy it!

Heather Wisner (Who) has partici-pated in three musicals at Tualatin High School. She enjoys the joy-ful atmosphere that is present in the Seussical rehearsals. She thinks the dances are fun and the costumes are fabulous! “It will be an entertaining musical to watch, one for all ages,” Heather told a friend. She looks forward to attending college and continuing to participate in future musicals. She would like to thank her family for all of their support in her numerous activities. <3
