Thursday, June 29 Schedule Notes & Details (continued)

THURSDAY SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Music & Wellness Learn how to use music to help manage stress and pain and optimize your health. This interactive session includes working with the breath and movement to music as well as lots of playing and creative music making! PRESENTER: Penny Brill Penny Brill, a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s viola section since 1980, is perhaps best known for her innovative work with the use of music in health care. In 1999, following a diagnosis and recovery journey with breast cancer, she began researching ways of using music to reduce her anxiety, lessen the side effects of chemotherapy and reduce the amount of pain medication needed both during and after surgery. Since that time, Penny has worked tirelessly to share her knowledge with the field and to make Music and Wellness an essential part of the work of the PSO. Penny frequently works with oncology patients, support groups, teachers and health care workers, in addition to special needs children, veterans, and refugees. Penny shares her personal stories through interactive sessions and outlines the use of music for pain and stress management. Penny is originally from Seattle and Portland, Oregon. She began her music studies on viola and piano. She is a graduate of Smith College and the Juilliard School. She taught at the Oberlin Conservatory for two years, played for the Buffalo Philharmonic and one year later joined the Pittsburgh Symphony.

FRIDAY SPECIAL PRESENTATION: Injury Prevention for Musicians As athletes, musicians can develop chronic overuse injuries as a direct result of long and arduous play schedules. Multiple studies report that approximately 70% of all professional musicians will incur an overuse injury and be forced to stop playing for a period of time. Some musicians may never recover. Overuse injuries range from lips to lower back and all parts in between. This presentation will focus on preventing these injuries. PRESENTER: David Shulman “Music has been my life-long passion. I began as a student player, graduated to being a professional musician, and then left it to become a physical therapist. Fortunately, I discovered a way to combine my two loves and found the satisfaction of treating the injured musician. I have been a physical therapist for 32 years and have dedicated my practice treating professional and amateur musicians since the mid 1980’s.

Free and open to the public! Join us for a reception following the concert!
