The concerto was composed for David Geringas, a disciple of Mstislav Rostropovich. The work adheres to the principle of traditional concerto genre and is based on juxtaposition of a soloist and orchestra, which undergoes acoustical, textural and emotional development. I wanted to compose a work in a form of monumental arch. In the work I attempted to expose the fragments and emotional states from concertos dedicated to the Maestro… This score follows a certain script with monologues, dialogues, allegories, climaxes, element of drama and lyricism. I tried to construct the concerto from many fragments reflecting on many things – possibilities of the cello, current cultural stratum as well as today’s nerve, pulse, hopes, dreams and will-o’-the-wisps… I wanted to compose a piece listening to which one would be able to imagine the Artist’s odyssey – a musical description of the moments from Maestro’s biography. The work reveals fragments of concertos dedicated to him, their agogics, dynamics, as well as suffering and longing of a person forced to leave a Motherland… The soloist is a hero whose musical portrait reveals his manifoldness. He is the axis of the entire composition, giving musical and emotional impulses to the whole orchestra. Five-pitch row, presented five times in the composition, reminds a refrain of a Prayer. Five pitches, five rhythmic patterns represent an epigram involving five letters – SLAVA – an abbreviation of Maestro’s name, which was used by his friends… Premiere – 2012.01.20 Kaunas Philharmonic Hall, Kaunas Soloist David Geringas, Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, conductor Juozas Domarkas [email protected] ORCHESTRA: 2 Flauti (2 Fl. muta in piccolo) 2 Oboi 2 Clarinetti (B) 2 Fagotti 2 Corni (F) 2 Trombe (B) 2 Tromboni Tuba Timpani Percussion-3: Triangolo Tamburo militare Piatto sospeso Metalic Wind Chimes Tam tam Gran cassa Campane Campanelli Piano Arpa Strings Performance time – 28’
