Auto Wiring
In complex designs containing a large number of parts, the task of wiring the parts togetheris often a time consuming and tedious task. Wiring multiple pins to a bus can also be a tediousand repetitive task. Capture now includes an Auto-Wiring feature that allows you to wire twoor more pins or wires on your schematic page.
To wire multiple points on your page, you simply need to select all the points and choose theavailable Auto Wiring options (Auto-Wire Two Points or Auto-Wire Multiple Points)
Besides wiring multiple points on your page, you can also wire points to a bus using the Auto-Connect to Bus option.
Associate Project Type
When you create a new project in Capture, you select the project type. After working on theproject you may need to change the project type. For example, you may need to change the

project type from Schematic to Analog or Mixed A/D type. Capture now includes the option tochange the project type of any existing Capture project.
Design Navigation Improvements
Capture 16.3 now allows you to create Intersheet references on flat designs, simple as wellas complex hierarchical designs.
Design navigation in Capture now also includes signal navigation feature to navigate theconnected signals on a design. This feature allows you to select a signal that you want totrace Capture then browses for all the connected signals on the design. Finally, you can selectand highlight the signals from the browse list.
User Interface Enhancements
In OrCAD 16.3, OrCAD Capture and OrCAD Capture CIS comes with many enhancementsto provide an improved usability experience to users. Starting from.
Following are some of the interface enhancements in 16.3:
■ “Color Wire” on page 9
■ “Color Part” on page 10
■ “Embedded Images” on page 10

Color Part
Capture now allows you to alter the look and feel of the block to change the color of a specificblock in your design. You can even add a picture to the block that acts as a visualrepresentation of the implementation below the block.
Embedded Images
Now you can embed a large number of image types into a schematic page. The image typesnow supported by Capture include BMP, JPEG, GIF, PNG and TIFF.
OLE Object Support
OLE Object support in Capture allows you to embed or link an object on your schematic page. The object types that you are allowed to embed or link are defined by the applications andfiles available on your computer. This feature allows you to annotate your schematic pageswith any external data (information) that you need to enhance the usability and readability ofyour design.
Bezier Curves & Elliptical Arcs
Capture now allows you to place elliptical arcs and multi-point bezier curves on yourschematic pages
PCB Editor 3D Footprint Viewer
The PCB Editor 3D Footprint viewer provides a three dimensional view of the footprint symbolof a selected part on the schematic or the part editor. Along with the footprint symbol, theviewer also displays pin numbers and pin names.
On the viewer, you can view a footrpint from different perspectives: top, bottom, front, back, left, right and isometic (a 120˚ angle view).
Besides viewing the footprint, you can also use the 3D measure tool to measure any distanceacross the footprint canvas and across the x, y or z axis on the canvas.
User Defined Pin Shapes
You can now create your own pin shapes Capture. You then use these pin shapes when youcreate new part or if you want to edit the pins on an existing part.
December 2009 10 Product Version 16.3
OrCAD Capture: What's NewWhat’s New in OrCAD Capture 16.3
The pin you create can include any shape available in Capture including elliptical arcs andbezier curves.
Scripting Support
The 16.3 release of Capture includes a scripting functionality that allows you to execute aCapture command through a command prompt. Capture also provides the facility to store andlater replay the command.
Every user action performed in Capture is logged in the form of a command. This commandthat logged is registered with a TCL interpreter. When the command is played back, Captureuses the TCL interpreter to retrieve the command and execute it in the resident application. However, this process is completely abstracted from the Capture. This makes logging andreplaying of a set of commands an intuitive and simple task.
The user resources are then better utilized to actually identify the type of script (set of steps)that is required for a specific task.
PCB Flow Enhancements
In OrCAD 16.3 now provides a new locking mechanism and warning filter features to furtherenhance your PCB flow experience
Following are some of the flow enhancements in 16.3:
■ “Locking Objects on Board & Schematics” on page 11
■ “Output Warnings Filter” on page 11
■ “Power Pin Enhancements” on page 12
Locking Objects on Board & Schematics
The Capture - Allegro flow now includes an object locking feature. This feature allows you totemporarily lock and object on your schematic or board while you are cross-probing. This willhelp to avoid shifting (with the potential of breaking connectivity) of a component on theschematic or board during the cross-probe operation.
Output Warnings Filter
During PCB netlist creation, you now have the option to ignore the following electricalconstraints:
December 2009 11 Product Version 16.3
OrCAD Capture: What's NewWhat’s New in OrCAD Capture 16.3
❑ PROPAGATION_DELAY
❑ RATSNEST_SCHEDULE
❑ RELATIVE_PROPAGATION_DELAY
❑ DIFFERENTIAL_PAIR
❑ NET_SPACING_TYPE
❑ NET_PHYSICAL_TYPE
❑ ELECTRICAL_CONSTRAINT_SET
❑ RATSNEST_SCHEDULE
❑ VOLTAGE
❑ MIN_LINE_WIDTH
❑ MIN_NECK_WIDTH
❑ MATCHED_DELAY
This means that these electrical warnings are ignored when the design is forward annotatedto layout. Also, if any of the above constraints is defined on the board, these constraints willagain be ignored in the back-annotation process.
You can now also decide if you want to output netlist warnings during the netlisting. And youcan choose specific warnings (by ID) to ignore.
Power Pin Enhancements
When you take your design to the board, by default, all powers pins will be shorted together(all VCC pins are shorted and all GND pins are shorted). This means that on your board youwill need to route all the power pins. In the case of large pin devices (like FPGAs), this canbe a tedious and time-consuming task.
Capture now includes a new Assign Power Pins command that allows you define invisiblepower pins as NC pins. This ensures that you then only need to route the power pins that arenot set as NC pins.
Since you design may potentially have a large number of schematic folder and pages,Capture allows you to specify the Assign Power Pins command for invisible power pins atmultiple levels of the design. At the design level, you can view the list of the invisible powerpins in the entire design. You can also select and view the invisible power pins at schematic

folder level, schematic page level or even down to the level of one or more selected objectson a schematic page.
DRC Enhancements
In OrCAD 16.3, OrCAD Capture and OrCAD Capture CIS comes with many enhancementsto provide an improved usability experience to users. Starting from.
Following are some of the usability enhancements in 16.3:
■ “Electrical Rules” on page 13
■ “Check & Save” on page 13
Electrical Rules
The DRC check in Capture is now separated out between physical rules and electrical rules. So you can now choose to run design checks from the available physical and / or electricalrules.
Check & Save
The new Check & Save option (available through the project manager File menu) allows youto run a DRC on the currently checked electrical rules in the DRC dialog. Since the DRC rulesare defined by project, you need to define the electrical rules for a project and run the DRCcheck once on the current project. Subsequently, you can use this shortcut to execute theselected electrical DRC checks on the design.

Cross Hair mode
When placing a part on a very dense design, it is often not easy to find your way around thedesign. To make this task more manageable, you can turning on the Cross Hair mode. Thiswill place a Cross Hair at the edge of the mouse pointer. As you move your cursor across thepage the cross hair will make it easier to locate objects like pin and nets or very small partsin your design.
Use the F6 key to toggle this mode on and off.
Elliptical Arcs
You can now draw arcs that are part of an ellipse. This means the arcs do not need to becircular, they can be drawn as part of an ellipse.
Enhanced OrCAD Capture and PCB Editor Integration
OrCAD Capture 16.2 comes with better integration with PCB Editor. The following crossprobing and cross placement features enhances flow between Capture and PCB Editor:
■ Now you can place one or all component in a page by just selecting the component inCapture, provided PCB Editor is in the Place Manual mode
■ When design and board are out of sync and when you try and highlight a part/pin/signalin PCB Editor that has been deleted in Capture design then for such components anappropriate warning message is printed into the session log.
■ While doing cross-probing from Capture, you no longer need to do Allegro Select. All youneed to do is to turn on the highlight mode in PCB editor and select the component inCapture and it will get highlighted in PCB Editor.
Improved FPGA Functionality
In 16.2, OrCAD Capture has improved support for FPGA flow with the followingenhancements and new features:
■ Support for split part: With an ever-increasing pin count and complexity for FPGA parts, the easy to use GUI based options of Capture that can be used to create single sectionand multi-section FPGA parts based on I/O bank will simplify the task of users.
■ Power Pin visibility options: Users can now make power and ground pins invisible bychecking a single option.

OrCAD Capture: What's NewWhat’s New in OrCAD Capture 16.2
■ More Pin defaults and pin shapes: Users can configure pin-shapes and pin-directions inFPGA Setup before doing Generate Part.
■ Specifying pin groups: Users can specify pin groups based on I/O Banks or I/O standard.
■ Modifying Pin defaults: Users can modify the direction and shape of pins in FPGA partsfrom GUI options.
■ Exporting FPGA: Users can export FPGA components by using the Export FPGA dialogbox. The export FPGA completes the bi-directional link between FPGA Designers andPCB Designers to pass the constraints information not available in previous releases.
■ Reserve Pins: Users can now reserve Input, Output and Bidirectional pins in an FPGAcomponent using the Reserve Pins dialog box from within the FPGA Export dialog box.
OrCAD Capture now comes with a new FPGA Options dialog box that enables users tospecify FPGA settings while creating a FPGA part. This dialog box can be opened from theGenerate Part dialog box.
Capture includes a FPGA toolbar for quick access to some of the important FPGAcommands.
New Annotation Type Option
The annotation dialog box now includes a new Annotation type list. When annotation yourdesign you can now choose from three sequence options:
■ Default: This options annotates you design in the same sequence and manner asprevious versions of OrCAD Capture.
■ Left - Right: Use this option if you want the objects in your design to be annotated inthe left to right order in which they are placed on the page grid.
■ Top - Bottom: You can annotate the objects in your design from top to bottom order onthe page grid using this option.
For a detailed description of this feature see Annotation Sequence in the Capture UserGuide.
