Transcript of Orbie_SdP 2007

The brief of this project is the requalification of an area located in the rural zone of VILLE DI CORSANO (SIENA).At the same time we aim at creating an appropriate place

to disclose astronomic events and observe stars.

• To reveal the emotional aspect of stars observation by involving the users in a “promenade among the stars”.

• To enable the dissemination of scientific content regarding astronomy in a playful way.

• People who are already interested in astronomy.

• Newbie that are curious about the matter.

Principal research methods:

- Direct observations

Eclipse 3/03

Saturno’s rings 22/05

-Visiting planetario 22/03

- Meeting with Millucci 26/03

- Objective:

To develop a system in order to support the

observation of the sky and astronomical events

that should be suitable for expert and non expert

in astronomy contents.

- Brainstorming (Attribute listing; Mind map)

- During this phase we produced twenty concepts

from which we picked up some suggestions to

develop new ones (exquisite corps).

We’ve selected 5 concepts from the original

20:

-Light path

- Playing the stars

- I’m Antares

- Legend labyrinth

- Starship troopers

We’ve started to develop the scenarios based

on these concepts

After the meeting with Prof. Millucci we chosen two

scenarios:

- Orbie Star

- Playing music stars

We work to improve them and then we’ve merged

these two scenarios into one.

We evaluate the concept through envisioning

scenario with the stakeholders.

We’ve developed the final scenario and we’ve done

the storyboard based on it.

Design an environment which supports both scientific dissemination of content about astronomy and the enjoyment of astronomical observations.

By walking in the park the constellations reveal themselves to the users.

Inside the park two kind of activities are possible:

4.Interaction with Orbie Star that allows the users to learn more about constellations.5.Interaction with Lumalive foulard that allow the users to hear some stars’ stories during a direct observation of the stars and constellations.

The system is composed by three main tools:

Mobile phone: orient, pointing, bookmarking.

Orbie: deepening astronomy contents through other disciplines (such as mythology, history, music, etc.).

Lumalive foulard: visualizing, reproducing music related to stars.

•3D movement recognition mobile phone.

•Sophisticated sensing technology calculates the direction.

•The recognition of moving shape in 3D space, using only sensors built into a mobile phone, is a daunting task.

STEP 1

The users can orientate themselves through the map on their mobile phone to find the constellations that are represented by LEDs placed on the ground.

Professor Millucci suggest us about the most visible constellations in the summer.

STEP 2

The interaction with the Orbie exploit the phisical affordances of Orbie shape and the content are represented according to information disclosure design principles.

STEP 3

Users are able to select the stars with their mobile phone. With Laser Orbie Star helps them to find the stars.

• Lumalive technology (Fiber LED).

• Dynamic messages, change colors or images.

The selection activity is divided in 3 step:1. Choose your desired constellation and begin to select the first star.2. Selecting the remains stars of the constellation thanks to the minispeakers’s guidance. 3. Finishing the selection and hear the constellation’s story.

To improve and refine the design of the interaction with Orbie by taking advantage of it’s phisical properties.
