Thursdays September 5th – November 21st , at 10:30 a.mThis storytime is an early literacy experience for children ages 2-5. Come enjoy a fun learning time with your child listening to stories, participating in action rhymes, singing songs, choosing books and learning group socialization skills. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Saturday, September 7th1:00pmDid you know that you can make any colorin the world by mixing red, blue and yellow?Did you know that you can use color to find out more about the foods we eat? Do you know how heat affects color? Come learn about the science of color with cool experiments, and bring home your own color wheel and invisible ink!

Autumn is here and the leaves are falling. Come learn about the life-cycle of trees with the OCL. We’ll explore a variety of trees, discover how they grow, and learn how to read rings. We will also learn about how and why leaves differ. You’ll read the rings of your very own tree disc and then turn it into a unique piece of jewelry. We’ll also make some beautiful leaf rubbings to take home.

CHILDREN

Now that the cold weather is upon us, many of our feathered friends will be flying south. Join OCL in exploring the many ways birds are important to us and also how we can help to protect them. Learn a cool use for feathers, and create some special treats to take home to your own backyard birds!

Wednesdays September 4th – November 27th, at 10:30 a.m.This storytime is an early literacy experience for children ages 0-2. The “Every Child Ready to Read” skills of talking, singing, reading, finger plays, and writing are introduced to children and their parents. These serve to help parents educate their children as they increase their socialization skills through music, activities, and fun. All children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

This storytime is a family literacy experience for children of all ages with special needs/developmental challenges and their families. The Orangeburg County Library welcomes your family to come and experience some extra sensory storytime with activities, music therapy, and technology to engage your child with a fun place to learn. “Color My World”

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for all Science Saturday programs. Classes are limited to 20 participants, so sign-up early to reserve your place. For registration, sign-up at the Children’s Desk, or e-mail Jennifer at jchatto-mccoskey@orangeburgcounty.org. Children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

It’s time to get the family together fora night of games and laughter! Cometake a break from homework with a game or two. All games are provided, but feel free to bring your own. We also have a Wii if you want a “video game” challenge. All ages are welcomed to this activity; children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

Saturday, September 21st 1:00 p.m.Bring the whole family to the OCL to enjoy our screening of the movie, Big Miracle. This film is based upon anamazing true story of a small-town newspaper reporter and an animal loving volunteer, who join forces in gathering a most unlikely group of supporters to rescue a family of majestic grey whales. This inspiring movie shows the power of teamwork and what can be achieved when people act together. Big Miracle is rated PG. Doors open at 12:45, and the film starts at 1:00 p.m. Come early for a good seat and a whale of a time at the OCL! Refreshments will be served.

Saturday, October 26th 1:00 p.m.Calling ghouls, ghosts, and goblins of all ages! Come to the OCL and enjoy a special screening of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown! Will Linus finally get to see the Great Pumpkin? Will Charlie Brown score some tricks or treats? What kind of mischief will Snoopy get into? Join us and enjoy some sweet Halloween treats as the storyunfolds. After the movie, stay and create your very own scary black cat and a creepy spider. All craft supplies are provided. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. and the movie begins at 1:00 p.m. Come early for good seats and yummy treats!

Saturday November 23rd 1:00 p.m.Join us at the OCL for our first annual showing of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Bring the family and enjoy some holiday laughs and lessons, as Charlie Brown shows us the true meaning of friendship. After the movie, stay and create some traditional corn husk flowers to take home for your Thanksgiving centerpiece. All craft materials are provided and refreshments will be served. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. The movie begins at 1:00 p.m., so come early to get a good seat!

Join us for an evening of stories, games and a costume parade! Orangeburg County Department of Public Safety will also be on hand to teach us about staying safe while trick-or-treating. All families are welcome to this spook-tacular evening!

Teens, do you want to get creative after school? Come join our new program, and take an adventure through time into the world of art. You’ll learn about important people and movements in art history, and then learn how to use different materials to create your own masterpiece based on works by a famous artist! All materials will be provided. Class size is limited to 20 and registration is required. This film portrays the true life story of the Brooklyn Dodger’s Jackie Robinson and his incredible journey to become one of the greatest legends in baseball history. Starring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson and Harrison Ford as team executive Branch Rickey, this film is rated PG-13. Doors open at 12:45 p.m. and the show begins at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Saturday, November 9th1:00 p.m. Did you read Kami Garcia’s Beautiful Creatures series? Then you won’t want to miss the OCL’s showing of this movie! Come relive the story of Ethan and Lena, as they search for the dark secrets hidden by their families and their town. Doors open at 12:45pm, and the film begins at 1:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. After the screening, stop by the Teen Section and check out the rest of Kami Garcia’s titles!

ALL PROGRAMS WILL BE HELD AT THE MAIN LIBRARY

It’s back! Write a letter to your favorite wrestler convincing him or her to read your favorite book. If you are persuasive enough, you may win a free trip to Wrestlemania XXX, on April 6, 2014, in New Orleans! Three winners will be chosen from OCL entries, and their letters will advance to the regional competition. Grand prize winners will be selected from regional winners. Drop off your letter at the Information Services Desk, or send it via e-mail it to Jennifer at jchatto-mccoskey@orangeburg-county.org . Winners will be selected from the three categories of 5th-6th grade, 7th-8th grade, and 9th-12th grade, so be sure and include your grade level and the school you attend on your letter. The deadline for entries is November 15th. Good Luck!

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY The Friends of the Library are in need of new members. This non-profit group of volunteers works to promote and assist the library. Each month the Friends of the Orangeburg County Library host a book sale. These sales generate funds that support the library in numerous ways. To become a Friend of the Orangeburg County Library, log on to the OCL webpage and click on the Friends of OCL tab. Your generous donations and time make a difference.

Book donations can be made to the Friends on days they have volunteers at the Library working in the book sale rooms.

Ken Coleman, our invaluable Reference Librarian, has been with the Orangeburg County Library since 1998. Ken’s favorite part of his job is helping customers find books that the OCL does not currently have in its collection. He also enjoys hosting Ken’s Movie Madness each month. Mr. Coleman is an aficionado of classic movies and is filled with information about the backstories of these films.

Mr. Coleman was born in Greenville, SC and grew up in Salisbury, NC. Before working as a librarian, he taught high school for five years. If Ken were not a librarian, he would spend his time listening to music, watching movies, learning more about computer education, and getting some well earned shut-eye! Currently Mr. Coleman is reading a collection of articles about vaudeville and the fourth volume of Robert Caro’s biography of Lyndon B. Johnson. Come visit Ken at the Information Services Desk for all your reference needs or just to talk Wake Forest sports!
