ORANGE JUICE: UP ADVERTISING CORE’S OFFICIAL DIGITAL DIGEST

This is the last issue of Orange Juice for this semester, and with that we celebrate two things: vacation and a new semester.

The good thing about college is that we are reminded to be responsible, and at the same time learn not to take things too seriously. A vacation is the perfect time to recuperate from a heavy workload. Hours spent at home lazing around; running bored out of our brains reminds us that hey, we are young, we run free, stay up late, we don’t sleep (as Travis McCoy would say).

Thank you for your patience in reading Orange Juice. Happy vacation, happy new semester, and don’t forget you aren’t getting any younger! Live every moment to the fullest.

Hello and goodbye to everyone who has patiently and generously spent their time reading Orange Juice!

We, the Juiceletter team, feel honored, humbled, and humored by this opportunity to feed you updates about the organization.

Just a preview of how things have been for this semester: the Juiceletter team has only formally met once (sans Betsy), and has communicated mostly via technology. FACEBOOK has given me the opportunity to stalk and bother people to contribute and write for Orange Juice and I can just settle interviews via e-mail and text. It’s a cultural revolution!

I hope Orange Juice, in its fresh beginnings has provided a base for future Orange Juice issues to grow and become more awesome. I have no doubt, just as much as the organization grows, as will the need to update members, apps, and most especially the alumni about how AdCore continues to shine. Imagine this, by the time we are all old and successful, AdCore will be legendary!

I would of course like to give a shout out to the team, Meggie, Betsy and one-man-superman James who have been so cooperative, creative and amazing in their commitment to this small project. PAT ON THE BACK GUYS! Couldn’t have asked for a better team! A special shout out to Danne as well, who has always been there in the beginning with her reminders and guidance up until now with her undying support. Lastly, to the ExeCore who have been so motivating by letting us know people actually read this stuff! Thank you always for the support after EVERY single release issue.

And this marks our signing off.

Once again, hello! Do you like our faces? We debut it for the first time.

And just the same, a goodbye. It was a crazy, intense, amazing semester. But now we can start fresh.

Peace out!

Hello AdCore! Thank you for this great opportunity that you have given me. I had so much fun writing for Juiceletter! Thank you to our readers for all the support that you have given us. I have to admit, coming up with a kick-ass issue every month considering the acad work you have to do, is not a piece of cake. But the nice comments that we get from you after every issue, the “likes” that we get in Facebook, the wall posts that we get tagged in saying that they’re proud of our team, makes every effort to come up with a Juiceletter issue every month all worth it. Thank you to our contributors for helping make this Juiceletter stint of ours a success. Thank you to all the members for being so cooperative especially when I text you last minute favors for my next Juiceletter article. Haha. And of course, to my Juiceletter team mates - Kara, Meggie and James - Bakit ang galing natin? Hahaha. Thank you for all the great ideas, the patience especially when I needed an extension for my deliverables and for being simply awesome (considering that I haven’t met Kara yet in person haha)! Even if I won’t be returning as features editor next semester, please continue supporting Juiceletter cos I’m sure it will definitely be a good read! (Right, Anna?) Please do keep in touch and see you around! ;) ^5,Betsy

Layout EditorHey AdCore!

Thank you to all those who took the time out of their busy skeds to drink in the pulpy goodness of the Juiceletter. This semester we made a lot of changes to the look, feel, and content of the org’s newsletter, so I hope that you enjoyed what we’ve done with it. There were also a lot of big changes and projects that AdCore did last sem, and I’m really glad to see how the org is progressing. So for that, cheers to all the accomplishments and successful projects that you’ve achieved. You’ve all earned a well-deserved sem break.

In the next few semesters, I’m only sure that AdCore will keep getting bigger and better. To the next editors of the Juiceletter, it’s time for you to raise the bar. Things can only go up with AdCore. To the fifth power!

What can I say?AdCore has definitely raised itself to the fifth power. ^5

To the Juiceletter contributors: Kudos for your support! I love your works. And I hope more people submit to the Orange Juice. (Don’t worry; no one will judge you.)

To the Execore: Thank you for all the heart-warming, uplifting words you tell us! It’s a pleasure knowing that we, as a team, have set the standard for future AdCore teams. (Pressure to next semester’s teams, HAHA!)

To the AdCore Pioneers (alumni): I may not know all of you, but I always hear from the Execore how you guys are all so proud of the accomplishments of AdCore. Thanks for reading (and contributing, too)! I hope we get the chance to meet all of you, especially this coming 5th anniversary of AdCore.

To my Awesome Teammates Kara, Betsy and Meggie: WE DID IT! To think we don’t even meet up personally to prepare for these issues. Being in this team is no stress at all! It was fun layouting all your funny and witty articles and graphics. (How do you come up with those?)

I hope you all enjoyed the look and feel of the new Juiceletter. :)

Bye (for now)!

[By the way, that’s my little sister Lia. I couldn’t crop her out of the photo, hahaha!]

EXECORE NEWSa friendly message from your FinCorpAff and PRP VPs

Hi AdCore!

How’s your break going so far? I hope you’re having fun! After all, we have to give ourselves a rest after a tiresome semester, right? =)

Anyway, let me know if I’m wrong, but last semester was a blast! AdCore really has gone to the fifth power! To the new members, congratulations and welcome to our ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY. *hug* I’m sure you are going to have fun with all the activities that the Execore, together with the project managers, have set for you next semester. The same goes for the old mems. Hey, old mems! We truly appreciate your time and effort for the organization. Without you, AdCore would not have come this far. Thank you everyone for demonstrating your continual love and support for our org by your inspired involvement on every project, creative professionalism as evidenced by our out-of-the-box promotions and steadfast excellence as AdCore goes to the fifth power!

In fact, we are glad to inform you that we are now OFFICIALLY affiliated with the Federation of Advertising Organizations (FAO) as one of its tripartite founders together with AdCreate of DLSU and Touch Point of UST. This entitles us with more opportunities for the following semesters or even years. How exciting! =)

More importantly, several projects are already in line for the coming semester. And we really hope that you will support each and every one of them. Don’t forget to reaffirm your membership during the RnR period and invite more friends to join AdCore. =) To learn more of what AdCore has in store for you next semester, go and attend AdVent. =) I hope to see you there!

Love, Jhanette Co

VP for Finance and Corporate Affairs

Before anything else I would like to thank all the people who supported and believed in me. (Feeling beauty queen bow.) So Hi guys, I’m Yasmin Alyssa Cruz, 4th year Visual Communication Student. Okay about me HAHA: I’m always smiling I don’t know why. Trivia: It’s hard for me to show my angry and sad face. I’m a laugh machine, I love to laugh and I love making other people laugh also. I love pink and I’m the current Vice President for Public Relations and Promotions. Of course I Love AdCore :D

Anyhoo everything happened so fast, from App to AVP to VP. Sometimes I still forget that I’m the VP for PrP. HAHA I really did not expect it, it was not part of my plans in life, because before I thought I can’t handle big responsibilities. But then those people who believed in me made me decide to run for the position. I know I would be handling a lot, I’m scared I’m a newbie, I still don’t know what to do. But with the help of AdCore and Execore I was able to manage a big project. THANK YOU GUYS!!! :D and though there are a lot of stuff to do and many responsibilities well I can truly say that I’m happy and I’m enjoying being an execore. Honestly... very fun and fulfilling. I was able to get to know more people and work with them.

Thanks AdCore and Execore for the help and support. I promise that I will do my best to make the adcore the AWESOMEST to the fifth power. Let’s make this sem unforgettable and super duper awesome!!! Oh and this is my last sem, :( Let’s make the most out of it. AdCore love <3 HAHA!

As a senior, you roll your eyes when you hear a freshman or sophomore whine about their workload and sort of secretly (because it would be terribly uncouth

otherwise) think (scream, actually) “SERIOUSLY, ARE YOU KIDDING ME, YOU THINK THAT’S HARD?” You have a superiority complex, you can’t help it. You feel like your 1/2/3 more years in the university count as getting through the freaking Great Depression. As a senior sometimes you think you’ve done it all, heck, you’re ready for it all.

NEVER TRUE!

Exhibit A. Scenario: brainstorming with the team for initial promotional strategies. So we need the Big Idea right? BUT THEN it was like- How do you even come up with the big idea? Nice one, 3 years of college education! (Thankfully, I think we all get it now!)

Exhibit B. Scenario: Final pitch to Globe (with boss and the big boss!) So we always start off with objectives, yes? We do that. Big boss stops us and goes, those aren’t objectives and proceeds to tell us the objectives must be SMART (pun possibly intended). We take it in good humor, but anyway, nice one again, college education so far!

For ThinkIN’ UP, the hardest part was always, always the time pressure (oh, and pleasing clients? No walk in the park). Time pressure for the pitch (main campaign WITH CREATIVES over 1 weekend), time pressure for the launch, time pressure for the pubmats (imagine printing and posting enough publicity materials to cover the entire university with a 7-man team within a very short period of time…HASSLE DUDE)- you name it, we were going nuts trying to get it done on time. But you know the feeling when you actually surpass your target (e.g. get 107 signups)? Ang saya lang! HAHA (Shout out to Project X, galing nyo!)

Point is, as proud as I was with ThinkIN’ UP as a whole, the experience was still pretty humbling (as National Geographic says, the more you know, the more you know you don’t know!) Hate to say it out of cliché-ness (hated to say that because that was cliché too), but this was an unbeatable learning experience right here.

***

To reiterate, this small team was able to garner 107 signups, aka 107 teams to join the competition and are giving away more than 100,000 pesos in cash prizes. Congratulations to Team Project X and UP AdCore for the stellar success of this event!

Cartoon characters, monsters and even breakfast foods invaded the Consunji room at the Bahay ng Alumni last

October 15, 2010 for AdCore’s 1st semester Addendum. The event was entitled, “AddenDOOM: Killing the App Status”. AdCore’s Addendum is a bi-annual event held at the end of every semester that is meant to welcome and formally induct the new members into the organization; it is also meant for farewells and to show appreciation for the soon-to-be alumni before graduating from the university.

Living up to AdCore’s challenge of excellence and going beyond for its fifth year, the organizers for AddenDOOM stepped up and grandly decorated the place with an orange and black motif accompanied with accentuations of Halloween-themed novelties and plenty of sparkling lights. The night started off with well-trodden icebreaker games such as the newspaper dance and “Bring me” to get everyone into a friendly and festive mood. Food was then served immediately after, while the organization’s president went through AdCore’s list of accomplishments for the semester as well as inspired and posed new challenges to the organization and its members for the upcoming semester ahead.

The end of the night belonged to the new members. Their eyes were covered by the more senior members as they were, one at a time, fed slices of oranges to signify their transition and growth as well as their acceptance of their new responsibilities accompanying the conferring of their new statuses.

AdCore definitely grew as an organization that night, not only with its new talents in creating and advertising but also with its new smiles and faces that feed the warmth, which is truly uniquely AdCore.

The second and final AdVance seminar for the 1st semester was a pretty small event due to the rush of activities and the nearing exams. It was different in a way that it was more of a group learning session rather

than a formal teaching seminar. The topic for the day: Basic Photoshop (and a few other techniques that the participants were curious about).

The ‘event’ began at the tambayan at around 4 in the afternoon with a small mix of people, both apps and mems. First in line was the introduction of the Photoshop layout, the various menus, selections and tools. Included here were the color adjustment techniques that are very valuable tools in editing pictures and making your Facebook profile pic get a lot of ‘likes’.

Following that was the introduction of cropping using the Magic Wand, Lasso and the Pen tool. With a number of great tips coming from our resident photoshoppers Marvin Ramos and Mr. President Manlapig himself, those present were sure to have learned a few additional lessons on photo editing. The most memorable part of the event, however, came at the end. To show those in attendance an example of face cropping - or placing one’s face on another body and making it not look too obviously edited – the group created the ‘Adrian is Execore’ picture. It was a delight for everyone seeing Mr. President’s face on every one of last Execore’s bodies in their CR pic. There was Adrian as a girl, Adrian with bangs, Adrian in a dress, Adrian in a smaller body and white Adrian. Seeing that everyone (except Adrian) was laughing so hard while this was going on, it was good to know that although this event was small, it was one that gave the people a good hearty laugh.

And to whoever has the ‘Adrian is Execore’ pic, I hope you can share it for all to see! Sorry Mr. President!

P.S. Thank you for all the people who helped make this event happen and to all those who attended. Go AdCore! ^5

Read on for President Adrian Manlapig’s speech to AdCore during the induction ceremony of the new members, as he also recaps the success of the organization for the 1st semester of Academic Year 2010-2011. Happy sem break everybody!

Good evening everyone!

Welcome to AdCore’s Addendum, our induction ceremonies.

You know what friends, I think we need to change the name - Addendum. Don’t you think so? Addendum connotes adding. We did not just add to AdCore, we have raised it to the fifth power, agree? Yay! Congratulations everyone!

And if you still have doubts whether we have really raised it to the fifth power, allow me to recognize our teams’ successes this semester. Let’s start off with Creatives:

• Team ACLE for pulling off a star-studded seminar on blogging • Team Advance for mounting more than one AdVance this semester.

Next, for FinCorp Aff:

• Punch Creatives who served around 15 clients this semester. I must say they are all very satisfied with our quality of work. • Team Adoomph for adding a new t-shirt design on our line.• Team Addendum for making this event possible.

Then, we have HR:

• With Team Apps, who now have just recruited 31 more members • Team Mems who continuously bring the members together as one big AdCore family.

And now, we go to PRP:

• Team Advent for a very good kick-off this sem. • Juiceletter for serving 3 very creative and interesting Orange Juice issues. • We also now have our official site up and running. • And Advocate, with one of our biggest clients – Unilab, for promoting quality life options in the University. Their page also reached over 4,200 fans in Facebook, a record-breaker for Unilab’s pages.

Last but not the least of the departments, we have SEAL with

• Team Adventure with 2 very fun field trips this semester. • Project X who successfully partnered with Globe. They garnered over a hundred teams for their competition, which I can say is one of, if not, the biggest record of competition participants in the entire university.

And to mention some more milestones of AdCore -

• Over the sem we have received approximately 13 proposals which include big names like the I am Ninoy / Cory foundation and DDB • We also have served as an advertising agency of the USC for UpClose that warmly welcomed the freshmen of our university • And in case you haven’t heard the big

news, we have just recently ratified the constitution of FAO (Federation of Advertising Organizations) and signed a MOA with PANA making us officially a council member, tripartite founder and the youth arm of PANA in protecting the advertising integrity.

Having said all of this, congratulations is truly an understatement. I really wish I could innovate a word just so I can properly acknowledge all the hard work everyone had put in to make this sem very very successful. Nonetheless, good job everyone!

The secret to AdCore’s success lies in you guys – our very competent, talented, creative members or what I would better call friends or even brothers and sisters. Thanks to you guys. I don’t mind spending one to three hours of my time to “sit-in” your meetings. Your inspired involvement and creative professionalism makes my attendance a fulfilling thing to do. And more than meetings, I also enjoy our random bonding moments in various places. Truly, working for AdCore is a chill way to achieve great things.

Our goals were clear right from the start. Quoting from our founding President, Gabby Laurel - “We wanted AdCore to be the advertising agency of UP, and even the college world.” And based on the accomplishments, we have undoubtedly delivered. However, in pursuit of steadfast

excellence, our successes should not end here. The triumphs we gained during this semester should open and tap even greater potential that AdCore has for the succeeding years.

For the first sem, we have conquered mountains and reached new heights. The challenge is, are we ready to climb more? I answer with a bold and proud – “Yes!” How and why did I say so? Because as mentioned, the secret to our success lies in you guys. With our current members plus the 31 people who will be inducted later, I am confident we can take on the challenge.

Speaking of, I would like to specially welcome the new members of UP AdCore. Congrats to you guys. You have made it this far. From your Revalida, I have seen very good quality of presentations and ideas. Without a doubt, you can all help us take AdCore to the fifth power. Once again, welcome to UP Advertising Core. We are all very much excited to work and have fun with you guys for the coming semester.

To end this, let me declare a manifesto. We are UP Advertising Core. We stand for Creative Professionalism, Inspired Involvement, Steadfast Excellence. This is UP AdCore, to the Fifth Power! Welcome, everyone! Enjoy the rest of the night.

UP ADCORETO THE FIFTH POWER!

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS DANNE?by Danne Lim

Danne was the former PRP VP of this academic year, but left to pursue bigger dreams and opportunities in the middle of the semester. Orange Juice is Danne’s brainchild, and was under her direct orders and guidance for the most part. Team Juiceletter would like to extend their gratitude to boss Danne for all her support! For everyone else who is curious about her and her great adventures, we want to know, where in the world is Danne?

Let’s get to the specifics: I’m somewhere along 35°41’ North and 139°42’ East, 2,994 kilometers from Manila. If it will be too difficult to bring out your map from the dusty

geography litter stash, well hey, I’m in Tokyo!

I wish I could all bring you here. I’m going to try and give you a quick tour around the places I’ve been to lately, and I hope you follow along.

So before anything else, let’s talk about what man cannot survive without—FOOD! You may hear that the Japanese are healthy and they live long. And it may be contradictory to live long and eat yummy food at the same time, but it’s probably possible!

That’s what they call an okonomiyaki—it’s pancake with anything you like in it (shrimp, veggies, meat, etc.). You have to cook it on the grill on your table, and then it’s ready to eat!

And of course, what is living in a foreign city without eating street food? These are called takoyaki (literally, fried or grilled octopus). Takoyaki is a popular Japanese dumpling.

On weekends, we would go around the city, explore and just allow ourselves to get lost. One of my most favorite places is Shibuya, mainly because of the famous Shibuya crossing where all stop lights turn red and pedestrians rush to cross in different directions. It is especially beautiful to look at at night. (I’ll try to get a picture from the top view if I go there again. :)

And here’s the Hachiko statue, a statue as a tribute to a real-life dog famous for his loyalty to his master. It’s often a meeting place of people.

Another nice place to walk around is Harajuku. It’s famous for cosplay, its fashionable stores as well as pretty, delicious crepes! And of course I had to try them out.

We also walked around Omote-sando Hills, a place where designer labels have their flagship stores in Japan. Think Greenbelt—only that the stores are huge and have their own buildings. They are also famous for their architecture, with lights on the buildings themselves, especially at night.

And for those who don’t like the bustle of the city, Ueno is a nice place to go. Ueno is famous for the Ueno Park where people can go boating, as well as for the several museums located around the park, housing works of Monet, Van Gogh and others.

And other pictures from our random weekend outings (where we also got to meet other Filipinos)!

And of course, where I go to everyday—my school! It’s Waseda University in Shinjuku. The buildings are pretty European than Asian.

So I was asked to write about my experience during my application process to AdCore. I would have rather drawn or just thought about it or something (haha), but I learned from being an app that you can (and maybe should) immerse yourself in the things that you experience. The whole time I was an app I got to meet so many cool people, learn so many things (like bridge :D), and opened up even just a bit.

I remember my first “tambay hour” at the tambayan, I think I talked for 30mins max. Then on my last tambay of the sem if I could guess I think the time I spent talking was an hour or an hour and a half. I would say that’s progress. During the sem I would remember thinking during my free time “hey, I think I should go to the tambayan’’ like it became part of my class schedule. Sooner or later it was kind of like making tambay and attending AdCore events were like those cool subjects you have sometimes, you know you can skip them but you don’t in the end because you know you’ll enjoy and you’ll pick something up.

I know part of being an app includes 20 hours that you should spend in the tambayan but you tend to keep going after you’ve finished the 20 hours because it was fun, not because it was required. I had an amazing time as an app of AdCore and I’m sure I’ll have an even more amazing time as a member =).

Has it ever crossed your mind? That maybe, I became the Best Female App because the current president of UP AdCore is none other than *drum roll* my brother. Well, I cannot really blame you. It was an intriguing explanation that I, too, uttered in an interrogational tone when I was informed that I am the best female applicant of last semester’s application process. Oops, don’t get me wrong. I did not bribe my brother or the whole ExeCore just to be awarded as such. However, my brother certainly played a role in my application process to UP’s premiere advertising student organization.

I was already aware of AdCore’s existence since the first semester of my freshman year because my brother, who was a sophomore then, was telling me that he had found an organization which had interesting publicity materials and does not highlight drinking alcohol and partying. When he became a member of UP AdCore, he would share – and brag – to me the awesome activities and partnerships with well-known companies that the organization has. There were field trips to advertising agencies, workshops on Photoshop, and a number of interesting events such as Yesthursday and TeenSpeak. I was really thrilled by every bit of AdCore stuff that he had shared me but unfortunately, I did not have the chance to apply during those times because of the bulk of academic work. Then, came next was my third year in college when my brother finally persuaded me to join AdCore. He actually offered to pay my application fee! Yeah, he is so kind but he is also wise. To be sure that I would finish the application process, he made a condition that I would pay him back the fee if I defer.

And so without wanting to lose an amount of PhP80 – sorry for being parsimonious – I took every bit of the application process seriously. I prepared for the formal interview by reading every information about the organization in the sigsheet, refrained from missing activities or events, cooperated with my buddy to get more than a hundred points in doing the buddy tasks, made it a point to allocate time in helping the team where I interned, Team Project X, and stayed in the tambayan after my 4:00-5:30 class just to reach the 20-hour requirement for tambay hours.

The application process of AdCore is comparatively easier than the application process of other organizations. But somehow, it is still not a piece of cake for someone who is taking 21 units for the semester. Yes, I did have seven subjects when I applied in AdCore. And it is indeed a great miracle how I was able to manage my time for school works and for AdCore stuff. But you know what? Halfway through the application process, I found out that it was not anymore the PhP80 at stake that keeps me from meeting all the requirements, from doing all that is asked from the applicant, from continuing the journey to membership. But rather, it is the company of the friendly, approachable and fun-loving members that I look forward to when tambaying and in every activity and event that I participated in. The good laughs and incomparable fun I experienced with them or working with them actually moved me to not just give my plain participation but put forth my best efforts as well.

The last semester was spent drowning in papers, toiling on readings, and battling deadlines. You’ve fought a long, hard and tiring war, and now that you’ve got a break, it’s your time to put down those weapons, and relax. You’ve got the time, the energy, the friends, the plans, but something’s

missing—the cash. Want to have fun but save on cash? Here are a few things you can do to liven up your semester break and save your wallet.

1. Read a bookRummage through your cabinets and grab an old book. It may be something that you wanted to finish, but didn’t have time, or an old book that you really loved and want to revisit. This is a good way to relax, de-stress, and take your mind off the real world. In case you haven’t gotten any, you can always borrow from a friend or even buy second-hand books from a store.

If you happen to be the uber grade conscious type, do some advanced reading or read your books from last semester. It may help to brush up on the chapters that you missed, so that your learning experience will be complete.

2. TV marathonRemember all those blockbusters and TV series that you missed because of an exam or a major paper? Sembreak is giving you the chance to catch up and watch them. You can opt to torrent or buy DVD’s from your local vendors at a cheap cost, and this will not only save you money, but it will surely keep you happy for a long time. Open up some junk food or microwave some pop corn to keep you munching during the movie. To make things more worthwhile, you can invite your group mates and friends who missed out on watching these too.

3. Learn something new (or build your skills!)Are you a frustrated dancer? Singer? Artist? Writer? Now you have the time to improve on yourself. Try watching videos on youtube for new techniques or moves that you can use to improve your talent or add to that list of skills that you can do. Since your parents are at work and you practically have the house to yourself, you have a lot of freedom to practice and perform. If you’re into writing or sketching, grab a pen and a paper and start filling up that page (or planner!) with the first thing that comes to your mind. The great thing about this is it’s not required! Most people find that doing something on their own will turn out better than doing something that their required to do. Try and see for yourself. Let your imagination run wild, and before you know it, you’ll have passed the time so much that you wouldn’t even have noticed.

CT 2010 | 214. Sleep over at a friend’s

What better way to spend the sembreak than to crash at your friend’s house, eat his food, play his games, and sleep in his air-conditioned room? Everything’s practically free for you! Just make sure that this friend of yours is someone who you’re close to, and who your parents trust. Don’t forget to repay the favor once the semester starts.

5. BYODNeed to loosen up after the hell months? The solution: Buy your own drinks. Most restaurants and bars charge a lot for a simple drink, so buying from the grocery or those 24-hour mini stores would cost much less. Gather a bunch of your friends for that much needed heart-to-heart and loosen your inhibitions. If you’re open and feel like trying something new, you can mix your own cocktails and have a taste-testing session. Just make sure you’re of legal age when you try this out.

6. Get fitLet’s face it—everyone dreams of getting a hot body. School work may have drained you last semester, but now that you’ve got the time and the energy, you have no excuse to get fit. There’s no need to go to the gym to get those muscles. You can make your own work out routine at home and set it at your own pace. Start with stretching as a warm up then do some push-ups and sit-ups as the main work out. You can also try jogging in place or around your village for a good cardio exercise. Not only will this make you look good, but it will also make you healthier and more prepared to face the stress of the coming semester.

7. Travel around the MetroYou don’t need to go far to experience a vacation. If you’re the adventurous type, you can ride a jeepney or a bus and explore Manila. The ride going there will be an adventure in itself if you’re a first-timer. Take a stroll down Roxas Boulevard and revisit the Museo Pambata of your childhood memories. The entrance there is just 100 pesos, and residents from Manila get a 50% discount if they show a valid ID. If you’ve never viewed the sunset from Manila Bay, take the opportunity to see it in its entire splendor. You can even have a gastronomic experience trying out the street food and the carinderias around the area. This experience will help you appreciate being a true Pinoy.

You don’t need a lot of cash to enjoy what you’ve already got. What are you waiting for? Let loose and have fun!

Ending it right, eating to your heart’s delightby Kara OrtigaIt’s your last semester in the premier University of the Philippines. Last time to spend with these college folk you have grown so fond of throughout the years, last year to stroll in the campus, last year to really savor every moment in the nooks and crannies of school. Despite the possibility of the infamous thesis looming over every senior’s head, it shouldn’t take over the chance to enjoy the last few months of being a student in the university.

Food has, and will always be important. It is 50% fun, 50% delicious. Sometimes I think about how people always on a diet are depriving themselves of instant happiness. Believe or not, UP is home to a handful of great places to enjoy food. From the dirt cheap, to the somewhat pricey, make sure before leave the school as a bona fide graduate you have checked off some of these places to eat. After 4 years of experience, I dispense to you a personal checklist of some sorts. Pig out in the campus before its too late!

It would be a shame if you graduated without trying The Beach House barbecue, or eating in the lib steps across Long Island. Long Island used to have an amazing chicken pasta combo, (I heard this is no longer available. But my sister tells me if you mouth a certain code, they will give it to you. Uhm, James Bond much? How true is this, I am not sure). The library has a great variety of kiosks to suite your hunger pangs.

Have you ordered from the student waiters of Tea Room in the College of Home Economics? They have cheap and tasty, and promising dishes; and also a consigned Figaro if you’re in the mood for some commercial coffee.

A personal favorite place (now closed) is the hidden Chateau Verde near SC. They had the great al fresco, garden theme ambience. I had some

good heart to hearts in that place. Never tried but always heard of (and also now closed) is Treehouse. Wonder if they plan on opening soon.

I bet you’ve never heard of the most hidden gem in UP, the middle eastern food house called Khas located in the UP arcade beside the UP Swimming pool. It’s cheap and it’s Middle Eastern and the chef (or owner) is purely Middle Eastern. Authentic much? Yummy spiced up food.

Shame if you have never craved for dirty ice cream, corn in a cup, taho, cotton candy (topped with powdered milk), Baba Shawarma, monay, pancit canton, FA/Archi siomai and isaw. The best invention was dirty ice cream sandwiched in a monay. Better if monay is hot.

The list goes on and on and I’m getting hungry just thinking about food. Sadly, food tripping hasn’t happened for me in quite a long time. Gone are the freshie days of being adventurous and piggish. For this last semester though, it’s a promise. I am revisiting every one of these places, and I think you should check it out too!

Congratulations to the future graduates of Batch 2011! Hope you all had a great sembreak!
