Orange and

content

1

Today, all around us, with the digitalization of services, platforms have become increasingly powerful. The content ecosystem has naturally embraced this wave of “platformization” of the world, allowing Orange to attract both users and service providers.

In developing its strategy as both a distributor and an aggregator across its footprint, the Orange Group has already reinforced this capacity.

On the one hand, more than 8.9 million house-holds are now connected to Orange TV services via a STB, providing them with outstanding high quality video (UHD) and audio (Dolby Atmos), and

soon a new innovative TV experience with Virtual Reality. This number of users will continue to increase both with the development of current TV customer bases and also with the launch of new TV offers such as those launched in 2016 in Belgium and in 2017 in Ivory Coast.

On the other hand, Orange attracts into its universe a large galaxy of content, both already popular (free and pay TV channels, TVoD, SVoD) and also emerging (web channels, eSport, streaming video gaming). Development has continued in 2017 with the renewal and extension of the multi-year agreement between OCS and HBO. Furthermore, the agreement signed between Orange Studio and UGC Images end 2016 was extended with the signature of a new agreement with OCS. Orange has also extended its partnership with Netflix to the entire Orange footprint.

Orange has supported film for many years. From “Valerian et la Cité des mille planètes” produced by Luc Besson, for which the Orange Group is partner, to films such as Hubert Charuel’s “Petit Paysan” and also “Les Gardiennes” from Xavier Beauvois, Orange through its OCS and Orange Studio subsidiaries proves that it is truly committed to supporting the diversity of French film.

Content is increasingly serving the Orange Group’s strategy; and this was confirmed on September 1st 2017 with the creation of Orange Content as the reference point for the Group’s content activities.

Orange Content

Greater ambitions for content

Orange is already a major and longstanding player in the field of content, and is now confirming and strengthening its ambition with the creation of Orange content, a new entity reporting directly to Stéphane Richard, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. The mission of Orange Content is to be the reference point for content for all of the Orange Group. A simple vision is behind the creation of Orange Content: to bring together Orange’s content resources and strengths, by including the associated subsidiaries:▪▪ Orange Studio for production;▪▪ OCS for the distribution of series and films from all over the world;▪▪ Orange Prestations TV, Orange’s broadcasting platform;▪▪ and all the operational content teams.

Orange Content also brings together other content-related activities, (including games, music, culture, infotainment, Virtual Reality, start-ups …) as well as the French and International content acquisition activities for all services edited by Orange (OCS, VOD services ) and multi-territory negotiations for third party services. This alliance enables Orange to affirm and reinforce its position on the market, giving increased coherence and visibility to content, as well as becoming an increasingly important international player. Across Europe continues to deploy its strategy implemented over the past few years:▪▪ giving priority to the widest possible distribution of best in class content;▪▪ investing in film and series via OCS and Orange Studio.

The Group’s presence in Africa and the Middle East is also a major area for development with new needs for both local and international content. Orange Content is also actively participating in digitalization initiatives in the region. Since the creation of Orange Content on September 1st 2017, the Orange Group is now in an even stronger position to address the content and entertainment needs of its customers in France and internationally.

Orange launched in october 2017 its VR application, giving access to a selection of native VR content provided by partners and studios. The Orange VR Experience is a free application open to anyone equipped with a Samsung Gear, HTC Vive or a cardboard headset by subscribing on www.OrangeVRexperience.com.

Orange, film and series

Orange has played an important role in the support and development of film for many years. This commitment to film is illustrated among others by the partnerships with institutions and major cinematographic events such as the “Festival de Cannes”, the “Deauville Festival of American Cinema”, the “Festival et Institut Lumière” and also the “Festival de Comédie de l’Alpe d’Huez”.

Through its subsidiary Orange Studio, Orange affirms and pursues its commitment with the coproduction and purchase of both French and European films. Since 2007, Orange Studio has invested in the coproduction of around 10 films every year and also in film acquisition. Around one hundred films have been coproduced since its creation, some of which have received numerous awards. Orange Studio has built a high quality catalogue over the past years thanks to an ambitious production/coproduction strategy.

Distributed in France since 2008 and in Switzerland since 2017, OCS is a package of 4 thematic channels dedicated to film and series, and also a replay service. OCS offers a rich and original programme schedule including a selection of major films as well as exclusive premieres and original series. In an effort to keep its OCS package promise of “100% cinéma series”, Orange works with the best film and series production and distribution companies: HBO, Sony Pictures Television, UGC Images, Studio Canal, Wild Bunch, Warner, Gaumont, Turner, Pathé, Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM, Fox, Starz, Eone and Orange Studio. From the beginning OCS has supported French and European film production through agreements with the film industry confirming its status as a “premium” package whilst increasing the offer’s attractiveness. Likewise OCS signed end 2013 a 5 year agreement with all of the French professional film organisations amounting to a total investment of 179 million euros. This commitment is illustrated by the pre-purchase of original French films, “diversity” films, and support for theatrical releases by providing bonuses for pre-purchased films depending on a film’s success. OCS is proud of this partnership which is proof that each year Orange is contributing to the diversity and quality of French film. Lastly, with the “OCS Signature” label, OCS closely works with French series creators producing original series with a 26 minute format.

Orange is present through all the different stages of films and series : from coproduction and acquisition with Orange Studio through acquisitions, distribution and broadcasting on all screens with Orange VOD services and OCS.

Orange Studio, the film subsidiary of the Orange Group, has been investing in the coproduction and acquisition of movies since 2007 (“The Artist”, “Timbuktu”, “Le Petit Prince” and more recently “Cézanne et Moi”, “M & Mme Adelman”, “L’Embarras du Choix”, “L’Opéra”).

Orange Studio, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2017, has funded more than one hundred movies (on average 10 per year since its creation) and owns the rights to

almost 1,200 titles, including 600 audiovisual works from numerous catalogues. Currently, Orange Studio is developing an independent and diversified coproduction policy, both in terms of budgets and genres. The subsidiary is the proud co-producer of several popular successes and international award-winning movies. Furthermore, Orange Studio continues its intense policy of film and audiovisual talent scouting in Africa.

At the end of 2016, Orange Studio signed a deal with UGC for the theatrical distribution of five of its biggest movies under the Orange Studio Distribution label. All the other films will be distributed by independent distributors including Le Pacte, Paradis Films or La Belle Company and by studios such as Pathé and Europacorp. The subsidiary has also developed a video publishing department which manages DVD and VOD releases and is opening this year an international sales division.
