From the Principal

The last week of term! Looking back in my diary we have: held

numerous professional learning activities for staff, participated

in a variety of sporting activities, organised cultural experiences

for differing student groups, continued the implementation of

PBL, supported other schools develop processes we have

embedded, facilitated assessments and testing for our students

attempting placement in specialised programs, led training for

staff from other schools in literacy and numeracy and actually

taught our classes. Schools are interesting places, they aren’t

just centres for students to go to class, there is a lot more to

Australian Government assistance for National Capital Excursion.

Year 5 & 6 students from Orana Heights Public School have

recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital.

While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational

programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage

and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all

young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as

part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist you (the

parent) in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian

Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible student

under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)

programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This

contribution will be paid directly to the school. You will be

informed when payment is received so you can come to the

school to receive your rebate.

We would like to thank the Australian Government for their

support of this program.

Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour were: National Museum

Parliamentary Education Office

Parliament House – Senate and House of Representatives

Telstra Tower

Questacom

Old Parliament House

Electoral Education Centre

Embassy Tour

Geoscience Education Centre

Australian War Memorial

Australian Institute of Sport

Students who participated in the excursion completed a post-

excursion evaluation survey. Overwhelmingly students were

very positive about all the places visited and their experiences

while on the excursion.

The excursion was a rewarding time for all.

Book Week Activities: Tomorrow is the big day!

Year 6 students have prepared their Book Week activities for

the rest of the students to enjoy. These activities will be held

tomorrow, Wednesday, August 29. The day will be reflecting

this year’s theme “Champions Read”. Students will be visiting

classrooms where Year 6 teams will be representing a special

country which has participated in the 2012 Olympics. They will

present information based on their research around that country

for all to enjoy.

As spectators, all the other students are asked to dress in any

country’s colours, national dress or anything that is special to a

country they choose. As part of their learning, all students will

need to be able to name their country and relate 3 or more

points about their chosen country to their class peers later in

the day. They can come dressed as an animal, plant, famous

person, in flag colours, perhaps even a famous icon, e.g.,

Statue of Liberty, or anything at all that is special to the country

the student has selected.

To begin the day there will be an official opening ceremony on

the hand ball courts starting around 9.15am where there will be

a march-past of the participating countries. This will be an

opportunity to show off all the students’ dress and creativity. All

parents and carers are invited

The students will then head off in their allocated teams to enjoy

the Year 6 mini lessons till recess.

Meal deal day from the canteen will help make this day even

more special. A school dance in the auditorium held later after a

wonderful way to finish the day.
