From the Principal
The last week of term! Looking back in my diary we have: held
numerous professional learning activities for staff, participated
in a variety of sporting activities, organised cultural experiences
for differing student groups, continued the implementation of
PBL, supported other schools develop processes we have
embedded, facilitated assessments and testing for our students
attempting placement in specialised programs, led training for
staff from other schools in literacy and numeracy and actually
taught our classes. Schools are interesting places, they aren’t
just centres for students to go to class, there is a lot more to
them. Schools such as ours are becoming increasingly more
complex and with the changes we are facing from the
realignment of education organisation in NSW by the state
government, this is only going to accelerate!
Today the school will be posting home to the families of
students in Years 3 and 5 their NAPLAN reports. These are the
results of the assessments they completed earlier in the year. I
have had a look through these and some students have
achieved exceptional results. It is very clear that the two A’s
play a huge role in a student’s success. Attitude leads to
achievement – A to A.
Year 6 had a great excursion to Canberra from all reports. Mrs
English tells me the students were all well behaved, showing
respect and responsibility at all times. In speaking to the
different students they identified a variety of places as being of
special interest. One thing we have identified from the
excursion is the need for more time at the War Memorial.
Anyone who has been to this magnificent set up would be
aware that you can spend hours and hours there but we have to
balance this with other features relating to other areas of study.
Mrs Amos and her debating team travelled to Orange last week
for the inter-zone final of the state wide competition. Her team
of Maree Pobje, Tom Brouwer, Mianca Janse van Rensburgh
and Sarah Boon were poised and ready for the competition. As
usual Mrs Amos ensured the team was organised, prepared
and ready! From all reports this paid off and a clear cut victory
was obtained. As a result we hold the next round at our school
against Eglington PS from Bathurst. A victory here sees the
team in the state wide grand-final. Well done team and Mrs
Amos. Mrs Aird tells me her moral support has been the telling
factor!
On Thursday morning I will be attending the Dubbo College
Senior Campus presentation assembly. I particularly enjoy
representing our school at this and seeing ex-students from
Orana Heights PS receive recognition for their efforts. I also find
it interesting to see how much they have physically changed
since they were with us. In shaking hands with some ex-
students my spinal fusion prevents me from comfortably looking
them in the eye, they are so tall! Craig Renneberg

Year 6 High School Enrolment Forms There are still a number of HIGH SCHOOL ENROLMENT FORMS that have not been returned. These were the ones sent
home two weeks ago in a large manilla envelope with the student name typed on the front. The forms MUST be in by tomorrow as they are being collected by the High School Transition Coordinator. From tomorrow any outstanding forms not received at Orana Heights will have to be delivered personally by parents themselves to the relevant high school. Kim English, Transition Coordinator
Kindergarten News Please remember the K-2 Sports day which is on Thursday
between 9.20am – 12-30pm. Your child comes dressed in
running clothes with their house colour represented.
We would also like to ask Kinder, Yr 1, Yr 2 parents to
provide a cake, slice or biscuits to sell for morning tea. The
P&C are providing drinks.
Could all home readers and Library books be returned this
week for the end of Term.
We have accumulated a mass of lost property. If you have
time please come and have a look through our tubs.
Finally – thank you for your help this term and “happy
holidays”! Early Stage One Staff.
Respect, Responsibility & Safety
Australian Government assistance for National Capital Excursion.
Year 5 & 6 students from Orana Heights Public School have
recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital.
While on this tour they participated in a variety of educational
programmes focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage
and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all
young Australians being able to visit their National Capital as
part of their civics and citizenship education. To assist you (the
parent) in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian
Government is contributing funding of $20 per eligible student
under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)
programme toward the travel expenses incurred. This
contribution will be paid directly to the school. You will be
informed when payment is received so you can come to the
school to receive your rebate.
We would like to thank the Australian Government for their
support of this program.
Activities undertaken as part of the educational tour were: National Museum
Parliamentary Education Office
Parliament House – Senate and House of Representatives
Telstra Tower
Questacom
Old Parliament House
Electoral Education Centre
Embassy Tour
Geoscience Education Centre
Australian War Memorial
Australian Institute of Sport
Students who participated in the excursion completed a post-
excursion evaluation survey. Overwhelmingly students were
very positive about all the places visited and their experiences
while on the excursion.
The excursion was a rewarding time for all.
Kim English, Excursion Co-ordinator.

Book Week Activities: Tomorrow is the big day!
Year 6 students have prepared their Book Week activities for
the rest of the students to enjoy. These activities will be held
tomorrow, Wednesday, August 29. The day will be reflecting
this year’s theme “Champions Read”. Students will be visiting
classrooms where Year 6 teams will be representing a special
country which has participated in the 2012 Olympics. They will
present information based on their research around that country
for all to enjoy.
As spectators, all the other students are asked to dress in any
country’s colours, national dress or anything that is special to a
country they choose. As part of their learning, all students will
need to be able to name their country and relate 3 or more
points about their chosen country to their class peers later in
the day. They can come dressed as an animal, plant, famous
person, in flag colours, perhaps even a famous icon, e.g.,
Statue of Liberty, or anything at all that is special to the country
the student has selected.
To begin the day there will be an official opening ceremony on
the hand ball courts starting around 9.15am where there will be
a march-past of the participating countries. This will be an
opportunity to show off all the students’ dress and creativity. All
parents and carers are invited
The students will then head off in their allocated teams to enjoy
the Year 6 mini lessons till recess.
Meal deal day from the canteen will help make this day even
more special. A school dance in the auditorium held later after a
wonderful way to finish the day.
