Oral Presentation of a song Each student will be required to give a four-minute presentation to analyse a song, which will include information such as title, artist, background, audience/target, analysis of the song lyrics (using SIFT approach), instruments, overall effect , your personal views/what it means to you/ why you like the song, etc. Prepare a hand-out for the class and your teacher with 10 useful words or expressions to define and 3 questions based on your song/presentation. Don’t forget : hook, introduction, body, conclusion. When you play the song, you can show the lyrics at the same time or afterwards. For long songs, just play the first 3 minutes or so and concentrate only on lyrics from the chorus with one or two verses.

Example HOOK (some possibilities) 1 I would like to give you a little guessing game on the name of the group. There are three words. The first word is a colour, the second is a part of the human body, and the third is a vegetable. Any idea? 2 Does anyone know the most common word used in songs? “LOVE”. Well I’m sorry for lacking in originality because the song I’ve chosen today, called “Where is the love?” is no exception. 3 What do you know about a song called “ Where is the love?” INTRO The song I have chosen to present entitled “Where is the love?” was composed and performed by the Black Eyed Peas. The song first came out in 2003 and marked a new era because previously the bands target group was hip hop/rap audiences, whereas the arrival of Fergie and a more melodious chorus opened up to a much wider public. My presentation will be divided into three main parts : Firstly – the lyrics and how they can be interpreted. Secondly – poetry techniques used to enhance the song. Thirdly, I will make a comment on the instruments played and how the song affects me. BODY 1 Lyrics not enough tolerance, too much hate, world gone crazy, selfish, narrow-minded 2 Techniques Imagery : SEE * people killing, people dying HEAR* children crying SMELL * chemical gases filling lungs Metaphors : the world is addicted to drama, let your soul gravitate Personification : how anger works, selfishness has got us following the wrong direction Idiomatic expressions: turn the other cheek, swept under the rug Rhyme : lots of examples in every verse e.g First verse mama – drama – trauma (a,a,a,a,b,c,c) 2nd verse discriminate – hate – irate (a,b,b,b,b,b,b,b) Even internal rhyme and to discriminate only generates hate Tone = critical, , sad, questioning, 3 Instruments and personal view Intro = light guitar (almost acoustic sound) drum beat very strong a sample(mix violin/keyboards) quite cutting, rhythmic, staccato Music jolting to back up hard lyrics in the verses Keyboards smooth to lay a soothing backdrop for the soft chorus I see problems today, firstly we blame other people, but in fact we all have to look at making the world a better place. Verses full of rhythm – makes me want to move. Chorus so touching – makes me want to sing. Reminds me a little of my father who was such a kind and caring man.

CONCLUSION Vivid lyrics make it a song with a message, it’s true we need more tolerance. The artists demonstrate rhythm from the instruments through to word stress and rhyme which help to make the song so catchy. Just try and count how many musical influences are present and you will probably agree on the universality of the song. It was my pleasure to share this song with you today, after all, that’s what I think music is for. Thank you for your attention _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Handout for the class Vocabulary 1 addicted 2 bound to 3 irate 4 soul 5 preach 6 turn the other cheek 7 lungs 8 ongoing 9 thy 10 swept under the rug Questions 1 Give an example of a metaphor used in the song. 2 Which instruments are used? 3 What do I like about the song? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpYeekQkAdc
