Transcript of Oral mucosa and submucosa final
Contents and functions
Mucosa &
Sub-mucosa
Sub mucosa
Submucosa consists of
connective tissues of varying
thickness and density
It attaches the mucous
membrane to the underlying
structures
Nature of attachment (Loose or
firm) depends on the character of
the submucosa
Minor salivary glands
Blood vessels
Nerve endings
Adipose tissue
Lymphatics
Collagen fibres
Various structures found in Sub mucosa
Blood supply Arteries
Larger arteries divide into smaller
arteries in submucosa & enters Lamina
propria
In Lamina propria they again divide into sub epithelial capillary network
VeinsVeins
originating from the capillary network then course back in
the path of arteries
Sensory nerves are
more concentrated
at the anterior region of the oral cavity
The nerves are myelinated when
they enter submucosa but
lose their myelin sheath before splitting in to
their end arborization
Specialized receptors for various types of stimuli are found in Papillae• Cold; Krause end
bulbs• Touch; Meissner’s
corpuscle • Pain; Free nerve
ending
Nerve supply
Ultra stucturally, Basal lamina has two layers• Lamina lucida• Lamina densa
Lamina lucida face the basal cell layer of epithelium
Lamina densa is
characterized by the
insertion of anchoring fibrils and collagen
bundles and faces
submucosa
Basal Lamina
Based on function , Mucosa can be classified as
Mucosa
Mucosa
Masticatory mucosa
Eg: Mucoperiostiu
m
Lining mucosa
Eg: Buccal mucosa
Specialized mucosa
Eg: Tongue mucosa
Keratinized epithelium
Layers of epithelial cells in the mucosa
Keratin layers
Stratum corneum
Stratum Granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum Basale
Non-Keratinized epithilium
Stratum superficiale
Stratum Intermedium
Stratum Basale
