We are pleased to report that in 2008, Oral

Health America set a course for significant

growth over the next seven years. We

responded to the global economic crisis

by taking stock of our programs, financial

position, partnerships, and strategies to

ensure our on-going commitments to the

individuals and communities we serve.

In Fall 2008, Oral Health America’s Board

of Directors developed a strategic plan that

focuses our intention to serve as the public’s

voice for oral health.

Thanks to you, and our many individual,

foundation, and corporate donors, we

raised $1.1 million in operating revenue and

$294,000 worth of donated dental products,

enabling us to provide assistance to more

than 66 community-based programs across

the country that strive to make a difference

for individuals and families without routine

access to dental care.

We commit to you this year, and in years to

come, to work collaboratively to address oral

health disparities, recognizing that this is a

global issue that is most effectively solved at

the local level.

we could not do it without you.

VISIONOral Health America envisions a future in which all

Americans experience good oral health as a critical part of their overall health and well-being. Changes in policies,

financing, research, education, and practices have driven new realities relative to oral healthcare:

People will be able to access and obtain the oral health services they need

Individuals and families will be able to understand and practice optimal self-care

Dentists and physicians will regularly collaborate to provide effective patient-centered care

National and state policies will include oral health as a healthcare priority

In 2008, Oral Health America’s Smiles Across

America® program increased community

access to preventive and restorative dental

care for over 90,000 elementary school

children who qualified for the USDA free or

reduced school lunch program.

Smiles Across America expanded

school-based and school-linked oral

health programs in eight regions of the

country including Maine; New York City;

Pennsylvania; West Virginia; Chicago;

Minnesota; Las Vegas; and Santa Barbara

and Ventura Counties, California.

Oral Health America’s partnership has been critical to the success of the Santa Barbara County Oral Health Collaborative’s efforts to advance oral health services for underserved children and families. Oral Health America’s leadership role in improving oral health is a commendable example to us, and we greatly appreciate the partnership we are fortunate to hold with you.

—Beth Pitton-august, director of corporate sponsorship, direct relief International

Through Smiles Across America, Oral

Health America provided needed funding,

dental product, and technical assistance,

ensuring optimum oral health care to

children from families that face significant

barriers in accessing routine dental visits.

An America’s Promise Partner, Oral Health

America delivered 193,470 units, worth

$294,000, of dental sealant, fluoride varnish,

toothbrushes and toothpaste to community

and school oral health programs, allowing

cost savings for care providers who are able

to leverage existing funds to expand oral

health treatment and education services.

Oral Health America’s donation of fluoride varnish allowed Head Start to pay for more restorative services for children who are not covered by insurance.

According to a public opinion survey conducted by Oral Health America in 2008, most adults are unaware of the role that infectious bacteria can play in tooth decay.

national Periodontal disease Project (nPdP)In 2008, the National Periodontal Disease Project collaborated with

dental educators, corporations, and advocates on a symposium at

the New York Academy of Sciences intended to increase interaction

between medical and dental care providers in managing and

treating periodontal disease. The symposium reached nearly 12,000

individuals on-line and 170 participants in attendance.

Aetna originally got involved in the NPDP and in planning the symposium because of the company's interest in the integration

of health services, including medical and dental care. We are interested in groups that are similarly aligned in looking at the connection between oral health and systemic health care issues.

— mary lee conicella, dmd, national director of clinical Operations, aetna dental, and oral Health america Board member

national spit tobacco education Program (nsteP)Through NSTEP, Oral Health America educated young people about the risks of smokeless

tobacco use via in-school presentations, the sale of 20,000 pieces of educational material and

outreach to 200,000 parents and children at the Little League Baseball World Series. Gruen

Von Behrens has served as an NSTEP speaker for many years, and travels throughout the

country to bring his experience with spit tobacco use and oral cancer to schools.

Gruen was a guest speaker at our high school, and I would like to thank him for the impact he has made on my 18-year-old son, You cannot possibly imagine how that assembly touched him. Upon returning home from school yesterday, my son came to me and told me of Gruen’s story and then said he will never chew again.

The importance of brushing, good nutrition, and regular dental visits is the focus of National

Smile Month, the largest independent international mouth health awareness campaign.

Launched in the U.S. in 2008 by Oral Health America with the support of the International

Dental Health Foundation, the program generated over 110 million audience impressions and

approximately $98,000 in in-kind support from collaborative program partners who worked with

Oral Health America to engage care providers and communities in promoting oral care messages

across the country.

The target Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program audience consisting of low-income families and about 125 individuals received free toothbrushes, toothpaste and educational materials for National Smile Month. The event was such a success that we will consider setting it up again.

—Renee Bragdon Community Education Specialist, Aroostook County Oral Health Education Program, Aroostook, Maine

The partnership with Oral Health America to promote National Smile Month is making and will continue to make a difference for West Virginia’s children and youth most at risk.

Oral Health America advocated for policies that create oral health equity for over 130 million Americans without dental insurance and those who are unable to obtain dental care.

Campaign for Oral Health Parity Oral Health America’s new strategic plan calls on the organization to increase its advocacy-related

efforts in 2009 and beyond. In 2008, the organization collaborated with Oral Health Kansas on the

Oral Health America Grading Project to develop Keep Kansas Smiling: Oral Health in the Sunflower

State, giving Kansas an overall “B” grade. The state ranked lowest (a "D-") in access to dental care.

Oral Health America also hosted the on-line National Center for Fluoridation, which promotes

community water fluoridation, and partnered with the Dental Health Foundation in surveying

the 2008 presidential candidates on their views about oral healthcare. Oral Health America

joined members of the Oral Health Action Partnership in supporting a letter to Congress from the

American Dental Education Association about oral health and healthcare reform.

Oral Health America advocates for improved access, social and economic equity, workforce diversity, and effective community-based interventions. The organization has served for many years as a loyal partner to state and local health department dental programs as they struggle to meet the needs and demands of what would otherwise be a poorly served public. It has also been a strong advocate for increased federal funding of oral disease prevention and oral care services.

If you care about oral health and if you believe that we have a responsibility to improving awareness of oral health benefits and requirements then support of and participation in Oral Health America is a requirement. It is simply the right thing to do.

—robert ganley, ceo ivoclar vivadent ag

I have been proud to be associated with the programs of Oral Heal America where the goal is to raise awareness and to provide care that supports the proven concept of prevention.

—mary J. Hayes, dds, ms Chicago, IL

I have been a long term supporter of Oral Health America for a simple reason: all the programs OHA has initiated over the years are designed to do the right thing, not the politically expedient thing, but the right thing. I have always been proud to be associated with OHA and believe their new strategic plan continues to break new ground in "doing the right thing"!
