THE PASTOR’S COLUMN

EASTER UPDATES On behalf of the members of the parish staff, Fr. Raul, Fr. Tony, Colette Vail, Heath Winborn, Arlene Kennedy, Anthony Armando, and Monroe Quinn, I would like to wish you a Happy Easter Sunday and a Joyous Easter Season filled with the love and peace of the Risen Lord! Your being with us helps to make this a Happy Easter for us. For the sake of those visiting and for the benefit of those who might not be able to be with us every Sunday, I thought I would give you an overview of some of the things that have taken place in our parish the past few months and that will be taking place in the near future. For me, this Easter is very different from the one last year. Then I was still on sabbatical after completing 14 years as pastor in Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish in Jersey City. This is my first year as pastor of Saint Joseph. The last time I had the privilege to celebrate Easter Sunday here in the parish was in 1993. As you may know, I previously was assigned here from 1981 to 1993. COUNCILS In the past months, we have reorganized the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Finance Council that assist me in fulfilling my duties as pastor. Working with Sr. Donna Ciangio, a nationally known expert in the field of parish organization and ministry, we developed Articles of Understanding to guide these two councils and to guide the selection of new members. The Pastoral Council recently conducted an In Pew Survey that was completed by more than 775 parish members. The Council has been reviewing the responses and has been reporting on them in our bulletin. The Finance Council has been equally busy in reviewing parish finances and more importantly in working to ensure that our parish has the necessary resources to meet its needs. The Finance Council is presently considering a new method of automated, electronic giving.

A STRATEGIC PLAN Members of both councils, working with members of the School Advisory Board, recently assisted me in choosing a firm to do a strategic plan for every aspect of our parish. We chose Meitler Consultants of Hales Corners, Wisconsin. The firm began working on the plan in March and it is anticipated that the strategic plan will be published sometime in December. We will be having a major parish event associated with the development of that plan Monday, May 9, at 7:30 pm in the school building on Elm Street. Everyone is invited to come and

share their dreams and visions for our parish. including our parish school. STAFF ADDITIONS The past months have also seen some staff changes at the parish. In July, Arlene Kennedy, our Sacramental Coordinator, became a member of our Pastoral Staff. Also in July, Heath Winborn joined the staff as our parish's Director of Operations. Monroe Quinn became our new Director of Music in late November. Fr. Robert Gajewski was transferred from our parish to Saint Michael Parish in Cranford, and Carl Bolleia took a position as Music Minister at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in North Bergen.

A NEW SITE sjcnj.org Last month, our parish greatly enhanced its presence on the Internet. We launched a new website, that I believe is one of the best parish websites in the Archdiocese (if not beyond). The address is sjcnj.org I encourage you to click on the site. I think you will be impressed. If you have already been there, go again. Each week there will be new information and photos on the site. We are determined to keep our site up to date and interesting! Speaking of the Internet, all staff members, parish organizations and ministries now have specific email addresses. This allows for increased communication and eliminates the hassle of playing phone tag, (my address is [email protected])

BUILDINGS Heath Winborn, our Director of Operations, has restructured the way we care for parish property. We now have a system where by maintenance requests are made by email and responded to in a more efficient and timely manner. We are presently doing considerable work in the Parish Life Center located on Grove Street to bring it up to code and to halt further deterioration of the building. In the process we discovered serious structural problems that had to be addressed. The zoning of the building allows the basement to be used for storage, the first floor to be used for meetings, and the third floor to be used as a residence by a parish employee. OUR SCHOOL We have been continuing to work to enhance our parish school. We have added professional educators to the School Advisory Board and we are working to roll out a new early childhood program within the next month or two. This program will offer the option of full day sessions five days a week. On another high note for our school, Saint Joseph School is being considered for Blue Ribbon Status. Those are just some of the many good things happening at our parish. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski

EASTER SUNDAY

JOIN US IN VISIONING THE FUTURE

OF SAINT JOSEPH PARISH MONDAY, MAY 9 This past month we started a process of developing a strategic plan for every aspect of our parish, including our school. The process is being guided and facilitated by Meitler Consultants of Hales Corners, Wisconsin. So far representatives of the firm have met with key leadership groups in the parish. The next major step in the developing our plans for the future of our parish will take place Monday, May 9, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm in our school gym located in the school building on Elm Street. This VISIONING EVENT, as it is entitled, is open to everyone involved in any way with St. Joseph Church and School. This VISIONING EVENT will be an exciting evening of learning and sharing. Together we will envision our preferred future as a parish and school community. It is a time where together we respond to essential questions asking, who we are, what we value, and what we seek to become. Our future as a vibrant and Spirit-filled parish and school community depends on your voice and your hope for the future. The VISIONING EVENT will include a brief presentation on our mission and life as a parish and a look at the people St. Joseph Parish serves. Then, in small groups we will discuss several questions:

• What does our current parish life/experience suggest that we do for the future? • What do I, as an important part of the St. Joseph community expect of my parish and school? • Which of the essential parish planning areas do we need to focus on and why? (the areas of worship, faith formation, community, evangelization, stewardship, service, leadership) Where do we, as a community of faith need to grow? • What is our hope for the future of our parish and school? We ask each of you to make time in your busy schedule to join in and participate in this important event in our life as a parish and school community. Your commitment to St. Joseph Parish and School is essential to its future. You are St. Joseph Parish! Join us on the journey to what we can become!

THOUGHTS ON SAINT JOSEPH SCHOOL This column features the thoughts and reflection of parents whose children attend St. Joseph School, our parish school. We are the O'Toole family . Dan, Claire Katie, Aidan and Riley. We have lived in Oradell since 2000 and have been parishioners at St. Joseph Church since then. Dan was baptized there 44 years ago. Growing up in New Milford, Dan attended St. Joseph School from 5th grade through 8th, Bergen Catholic HS, the University of Scranton and Fordham Law School. Claire grew up in Connecticut and is a product of the public school system. We have three children. They all attend St. Joseph School Our daughter Katie is now in 6th grade, our son Aidan is in 4th grade and our daughter Riley is in 2nd grade.

The decision to send them to St. Joseph School is a choice that we are glad we made. Oradell has a very good public school system that we could have sent our children to at no cost. We chose St. Joseph School because we want our children to have God's love to be the foundation on which they build their lives. At St. Joseph we know that every day our children will be surrounded by love and taught to view the world through the prism of our Catholic faith. God, love, kindness and forgiveness are as much a part of the St. Joseph curriculum as reading, writing and arithmetic. We love that. It mirrors our priorities. We can only teach our children so much. We only have them to ourselves for a few hours a day. We want our lessons to be repeated throughout the course of the day. We want prayer and living in the presence of God's love to be as natural for our children as breathing. Faith needs to be worked on and cultivated like any other worthwhile endeavor. We feel that our foremost obligation to our children is to prepare them for the opportunities and challenges of life. We want them to make love their first and last reflex in all matters. St. Joseph provides the perfect setting for preparing for and beginning this journey. As parents we have seen returns on our investment every day.

EASTER SUNDAY

SUNDAY 9 AM MASS NOTICE NOTE: On the following Sundays: May 1, 8, 15 & 22 we will add a 9:00 AM Mass in Mary’s Chapel (Lower church). This will take place due to the problem of “space” in the upper church due to First Holy Communions. ALSO, our special Liturgy of the Word for Children will be suspended for those Sundays due to the extra 9 am Mass in the Lower Church. We encourage the children to come and participate in the celebration of the 9 am Mass in the lower church.

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND NEXT WEEKEND, April 30 & May 1, we will participate in a special appeal for mission parishes in the United States and its dependencies. This Appeal strengthens the Church at home by supporting Catholic Communities in need.

EASTER MESSAGE ABOUT COMING CHANGES TO THE MASS

Happy Easter! The Archdiocese of Newark is happy that you could join us today for Easter Mass. This is a very special time of the year during which the Church recalls the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s only Son. It is a joyous time for the People of God, and there is no better way to celebrate the resurrection than by attending Easter Mass.

On Easter Sunday, many Catholics attend Mass even if they do not normally do so year round. If it has been a while since you last came to Mass, please know of the Church’s great desire to see you here every Sunday throughout the year. At Mass, we hear God’s word and we celebrate the Eucharist, and those are two of the best ways to grow in faith, worship God, and discern what God is asking of us and our lives.

It is very important that Catholics participate in the Mass when they attend. This is done by responding to the greetings and prayers; by singing the songs and various acclamations; by praying quietly and reflecting on the word of God; and by participating in the Eucharist. Soon, there will be some changes made to the words we use at Mass. It is important that all Catholics be aware of these changes so that they can continue to actively participate when going to church.

The book that contains all of the prayers for Mass is called the Roman Missal. It is first published in Latin by the Vatican and then translated into the local languages of the world for use at Mass. On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new English translation of the Roman Missal. This new translation will sound different than the one we are currently using.

The current translation translated the meaning of the Latin words into English. The new translation will translate the words more literally from Latin into English. For example, when you come to Mass, one of the first things you hear a priest say is the greeting at the beginning: “The Lord be with you.” It is a common church greeting to which the people respond, “And also with you.” Soon, though, the response of the people will change from “And also with you” to “And with your spirit.” This is because in the Latin the response is Et cum spiritu tuo which is literally translated into English as “and with your spirit.”

It will take some time to get used to these changes and parishes will provide texts with the new words for the people when they are first put into use. Initially many will need to read the responses, but it should not take long before they are committed to memory and we can once again respond as freely as we do now.

If you are interested in seeing what more of these changes will look like, you can visit these websites:
