n the UK, with around half a million people withdementia currently living at home, many of us

are touched by this cruel condition. For thosediagnosed with younger onset dementia – under the age of 65 – life can be even harder totackle, with families having to juggle care withwork and paying the bills.

The Rochford-based charity Peaceful Place provides a lifeline to many Essex families livingwith dementia. The charity, established in 1996,runs a day centre five days a week, offering specialised help and support with theaim of stimulating its members mentally, physically and socially.

Enthusiastic, experienced and caring staff takemembers out on enjoyable day trips and torestaurants, as well as organising a multitude ofactivities in the day centre. The activities on offerinclude arts and crafts, music, Tai Chi, aromather-apy, cooking, quizzes, table tennis, snooker etc.

Mission atPeaceful Place

Dan Lawrence, new Operations Manager atPeaceful Place, said: “Our mission at PeacefulPlace is two-fold. Not only do we look after members in a safe, caring and friendly environment, but at the same time carers alsoget the opportunity to continue with their working lives or take respite. Working closelywith community mental health teams, theAlzheimer’s Society and the Dementia Advocacy Service, you can be sure our members receive the best care, advice and support while they are at Peaceful Place.”

As a logical extension to its existing services, work is about to begin on building supportedliving accommodation in nearby Hockley to enable people to continue to live as independent lives as possible within the community. All too often, younger people withdementia are inappropriately placed in homesmore suitable for older patients, where theirneeds are sometimes not met.Peaceful Place still needs to raise £300,000 tocomplete its building project, with a view to operating from January 2012. To finance thismuch-needed facility, a series of fundraisingevents are planned, starting with a street partyon the Royal Wedding Day, so don’t fret if your invitation has been “lost in the post” because:

f I had a pound for every time one of my clientshas caught sight of themselves in the mirror at my

salon and uttered the immortal line 'Does my bumlook big in this?' - I could have bought a Caribbeanisland by now and spending my days sipping rum-based cocktails while wearing loud shirts.

We all want to look our best, whether we're short ortall, slim or curvier. The secret of course is what youwear, and how you wear it.

'She's got legs, she knows how to use them' thefurry-chopped rockers ZZ Top informed us and theywere spot on. Dressing your legs right can make allthe difference - whether you're a lady or a gent. Always choose trousers that are long enough for you- if your pants are too short, it visually cuts the lengthof your legs. The longer your legs look, the slimmerthey'll appear.

Onto the basics, choose darker colours for areas youdon't want the eyes to focus on and brighter coloursfor places you do want to accentuate. Black and navyare very slimming and should be staples of everywardrobe. Dressing from head to toe in one colouralso makes you look taller. Stay away from large pat-terns and look for vertical stripes - thin ones are bestas they add to the illusion of height. Adding lengthcreates the impression of a longer body, which helpsyou look thinner.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

by Craig Smith

I It's all about the right fit. If your clothing is too tight,it accentuates and magnifies all the flaws. But don'tfall into the common trap of thinking shapeless andhuge hides a multitude of sins - clothing that is tooloose and baggy actually magnifies your size ratherthan shrinking it.

And to answer the original question - if you don'twant your bum to look big, then long jackets andtops that go past the hips all help to conceal heavierbottoms. Prints should only be worn on the top - fab-rics with vertical lines or patterns are suited to thosewith a larger derriere.

But a key thing is to remember, and what Gok says istrue, it's all about the confidence. If you've got itflaunt it. If you're happy with the skin you're in, let theworld know it. Dressing to suit your body type is easy, fun and for those ladies and gents who get it right,oh so sexy!

Promoting independentlearning is the key

Advertorial

Pupils at Thorpe Hall School enjoy an 11 acre site.

upils at Thorpe Hall School are encouraged everyday to learn about

learning.

“If pupils know how learning takes placethen they are in a better position to makesure it happens.” said Andrew Hampton,Headteacher. Thorpe Hall School educatesgirls and boys from age 2 to 16 at its 11 acresite in Thorpe Bay.

Excellent, modern and purpose-built facilities, coupled with small class sizes enable the school to provide an outstand-ing education that goes well beyond academic success. “Our theme this term isto get pupils to reflect on their learning andgain a better understanding of what worksfor them. This might mean our Year 11pupils refining their revision techniques asthey prepare for GCSE or it might mean a

P class of Year 1 pupils learning activelistening skills.

The overarching emphasis is on promoting independent learning wherepupils see their teachers as supporters andfacilitators rather than deliverers of knowledge” Mr Hampton went on. “Themost important thing is for pupils to realise that although learning happens inmany different ways, the key to the mostsuccessful learning is the right attitude.

That is why we spend time in every class, from Reception to Year 11 discussing andlearning about the competencies youneed to be a good learner.” Thorpe HallSchool is currently holding recruiting forSeptember 2011 and beyond thoughplaces are limited.

sale of the home, once the annuity has beenbought, can be left to the next generation.

You could try to fund care fees out of regularincome – if you have the means to do so.

Alternatively, with careful planning you couldbuild an investment portfolio designed to payan income without taking undue risk. You willneed expert help because it is crucial that yourcapital is protected to a large degree. Again, just be aware that several years’ fees couldquickly add up, so the balance and diversification of assets will have to be justright.

We are all expected to live longer but whilethat is good news it is likely to mean that morepeople will need to consider care fees – not justfor themselves, but also for their parents. It is

an issue that is unlikely to disappear.

he funding of long-term care is becominga major political issue, but for many

families it is already a burning personal issue. It is estimated that more than 20,000 pensioners were forced to sell their homes topay for care last year (Source: The Telegraph,November 2010) and that number could be onthe increase given rising care costs.

Depending on your income you may get statehelp, although a person who owns his or herhome is likely to fail the local authority meanstest and be deemed a "self-funder".

In England, this threshold is £23,250 which hasbeen frozen for the next two years (in Wales it is£22,000 and in Scotland £22,750) (Source: Department of Health, January 2011).

One popular option for paying for long-termcare is an immediate care annuity, which pays atax free fixed income for life, provided that it ispaid directly to the care home provider.

This can provide some certainty for peoplemoving into care, as they know their fees willbe guaranteed to be paid for life. There is alsothe reassurance that whatever is left from the

answer is; nobody knows! Various - often angry- interest groups have been throwing figuresaround, but it’s all guesswork. Currently, thegreatest differential is between young drivers.According to the British Insurers Association,an 18 year old man will pay £4,400 per year foran average car where a young woman of thesame age would expect to pay £2,700 for thesame car.

The general view seems to be that men will becharged a little less to insure their cars – up to10% perhaps – where as a young lady can ex-pect to pay up to 30% more. AA Insurance calculates that this will add an average of £400to a young woman’s annual premium.

Call me a cynic, but the insurance companiessilence seems conspicuous to me and I can’thelp thinking that some lobbying in Luxembourg may have influenced the Honourable Judges.....

n the last issue, I bemoaned the tax increasesfor company car drivers which will be

starting to take effect this month. Now, changesto EU legislation surrounding insurance premiums are going to affect about half the population, as they are picking on every womanwho insures their own lives, a vehicle or pays into a pension....

Political Correctness gone mad?

Following a ruling by the European Courts of Justice, expect big changes to insurance premiums come December 2012. In their infinitewisdom, the ECJ has declared that insurers mayno longer take gender in to account when setting premiums, citing the theory that this con-tradicted discrimination laws as their inspiration.

Risky Business

My understanding of the underwriting processis that it is risk based. So why, when women livelonger and are safer drivers, should they pay thesame for motor insurance or life cover as men,who are a greater risk? Surely gender discrimination should be superseded by common sense in this case. After all, men don’tpay more simply because they are male; it is theassociated risk of all that testosterone that carries the penalty.

What’s the damage?

So, what is this going to cost? Well, the short

ntroduced in 2007 Lasting Powers of Attorney’s(LPA’s) are now vital documents, but there are still

many misconceptions, and questions.

“Why should I have one?”... and the biggest question of all: “why are they so important?”

Not everyone likes to read guides, so here we relaya real life story to put the subject of “losing capacity”, the Court of Protection and LastingPowers of Attorney into perspective. We have exaggerated nothing, although at first you may notbelieve that!

70 year old retired grandparents Jack and Pamwere financially comfortably off when withoutwarning, Jack suffered a stroke that left him withthe mental ability of a child for the remainder of hislife.

Jack was officially declared as “lacking capacity”, as he could no longer make decisions for himself. To their horror, Pam and son David discovered thatdespite being married Pam could not act for, or sign

anything on Jack’s behalf! Bank accounts and savings in Jack’s name and held jointly were‘frozen’. The family was forced, at considerable ex-pense, to instruct a solicitor for son David to applyto the Court of Protection for authority to access hisparent’s money on their behalf. This required timeconsuming and confusing completion of up to fiftyofficial documents. Three months later they heardthat they had been unsuccessful, probably due toa minor error in the form-filling.

Worse still the Court of Protection appointed a‘deputy’ in the form of a local solicitor to look afterJack’s financial affairs. Pam and David were shockedto discover that the ‘deputy’ ignored all their pleasand requests, he had his own ideas on what Jackwould have wanted, and appealing the ‘deputy’s’decision could take the family up to a year.

This scenario, and worse, has already been playedout many times, and will be repeated time andagain, as many people will be slow to protect themselves.

If you would like to protect your loved ones from asimilar scenario you can get more information by contacting Simon Smith, a LastingPower of Attorney specialist, at Independent Retirement Strategies

recipe of the month

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

Next month’s recipe:

‘Easy Sausage Meatball Pasta Bake’

Roast Leg of Lamb in a Parmesanand Breadcrumb Crust

Cut the prosciutto into long strips. Now take apiece of rosemary and a piece of prosciutto andpush into each incision, leaving the tops stickingout (Anyone who has studded lamb with garlicwill get the idea, if the incisions are not big ordeep enough just go round with your knifeagain. Once you have fiddled with 2 or 3 you willget the idea and it becomes a lot easier).

Rub the olive oil all over the lamb and seasonwith salt and pepper, rubbing in well.

In a bowl mix the cheese and breadcrumbs andcarefully sprinkle all over the top and sides of thelamb pressing down well with your hands sothat the meat is covered and the crumbs don’tfall off.

Carefully place the meat in a roasting tin that willjust hold the lamb and pour the wine and anequal quantity of water into the pan. Cover thewhole tin with foil and bake in the oven for 2 ½hours. For the last 10 minutes of cooking time, remove the foil, increase the heat to200c/fan180c/gas 6 and roast until the top goes crispyand golden, watch it doesn’t burn.

Remove from the oven and rest for 20 minutes. The cooking juices can be used as a light jus butyou can always add a little bisto if you want tomake it into a gravy.

Slice and serve with some small jersey royalpotatoes and vegetables of your choice.

his is a Sicilian recipe and works perfectlywith lovely spring lamb, especially for an

Easter lunch. The first of the season Welsh lambis great and the slow roasting makes the meatvery tender and the flavours of the rosemary andprosciutto work really well together. Savour thearomas when you are cooking this dish...thekitchen will smell wonderful.

Enjoy!

Serves 82kg/4lb 4oz leg of spring lamb200g/6 ½ oz prosciutto, cut into 5mm/ ½ in thickslicesBunch of rosemary cut into small pieces 2 tbsp olive oil100g/3 ½ oz freshly grated parmesan100g/3 ½ oz fresh breadcrumbs250ml/ 9 fl oz white wine

MethodPreheat the oven to 180c/fan 160/gas 4. Placeyour leg of lamb on a large chopping board andwith a long, thin, sharp pointed knife make deepincisions all over the meat.

It ain't what you do...(It's the way that you do it)

The earlier in the day you can train, the better,as this will boost your metabolism for the restof it and maximize the fat-burning effect. Do eat beforehand, as training on an emptystomach could lead to you burning not fat butmuscle tissue, to convert into sugar for energy.Keep your sessions to a 20 or 30 minute maximum.

You choose your own levels to work at, so behonest with yourself. If it's too easy, step it up alevel; if it's too hard, just drop it down a bit.Your fitness level will improve over time.

And people always ask 'what is the bestactivity?' I say the one that you actually DO! Intervals can be performed on any piece ofequipment - be it a bicycle, rowing machine, oreven your own two legs whilst speed walkingor running. Just choose a cardio activity thatyou like the most (or dislike the least) and giveit your best effort!

For more information visit www.phfblog.com

"Lack of activity destroys the good conditionof every human being, while movement andmethodical physical exercise save it and preserve it" - Plato

t's a question I get asked all the time - whattype of exercise is the most effective if you

are trying to burn fat and lose weight?

It's not really what you do - but how you do it -that makes all the difference

Low-intensity, long duration aerobic exercise -such as a gym class, swimming or jogging -may work for absolute beginners, but anybodywith the most basic level of fitness is better offusing interval training.

High-intensity interval training burns morebody fat because it increases your metabolicrate both during and after training - so youkeep on losing weight, even when you'vestopped training and started watching TV.

Interval training involves alternating shortbursts of hard effort (i.e. sprinting for 10-30 seconds) with easier periods (i.e. easy joggingfor 30-90 seconds). Any combination of intervals can be used, utilising speeds, inclinesor resistance levels.

The Invention of Murder: How the Victorians Revelled inDeath and Detectionand Created ModernCrime by Judith Flanders

or those of you whose idea of a great timeis settling down with a cup of tea in front

of Midsummer Murders or Miss Marple - thenthis is definitely the book one should choosewhen you fancy curling up to read.

Murder at the start of the 19th century was rare. But this was the century that brought us Edinburgh body snatchers Burke and Hare, thefirst murderer caught by telegraph - in infamousDr Crippen - and the first murder on a train. Theidea that killers loitered on every street cornerprompted the first police force and, later, the firstdetectives, which led, inevitably, to the first detective novel.

As murder seeped into every corner of 19th-century life, so newspapers devoted thousandsof column inches to brutal killings, theatres werecrammed with audiences applauding re-enactments of gory mutilations, Madame Tussaud welcomed visitors to her chamber ofhorrors and children laughed as Punch pummeled Judy to death. If murder remained ararity in real life it was ubiquitous in the Victorian imagination.

As the magazine Punch said at the time - "We are

a trading community, a commercial people.Murder is doubtless a very shocking offence, nevertheless as what is done is not to be undone, let us make our money out of it."

In this meticulously researched and compellingbook, Judith Flanders - author of The VictorianHouse - retells fifty gruesome stories of manydifferent types of murder and examines howthey were reported on by the press, how theywere viewed by the general public, and howthese crimes lived on in novels and songs, intheatre and opera - even in puppet shows andperforming dog-acts.

The cases featured are both famous andobscure, from the mythical Sweeney Todd theDemon Barber of Fleet Street, to the tragediesof the murdered Marr family in London's EastEnd, Greenacre who transported his dismembered fiancée around town by omnibus, to Whitechapel serial killer Jack theRipper.

With an irresistible cast of swindlers, forgersand poisoners, the mad, the bad and the dangerous to know, The Invention of Murder isboth a gripping tale of crime and punishment, and history at its most readable.

t Shoeburyness High School we make considerable use of educational visits for

students in all year groups to enhance the opportunities offered to them through the usualschool curriculum and to enable them to extendtheir skills and experience through a wide range ofexciting activities.

Each year we run around 250 visits. Some of theseare trips for part of a day to local amenities such asBelfairs Woods, Southend Library or Essex University.

Other day visits will include London art galleries, museums, theatres and a gamelan music course. Anumber of departments organise visits to such varied places as Bluewater, Cadbury World in Birmingham, Fords at Dunton and BillingsgateSeafood Training School to have first hand experience of what it is like to work in these places.Often experienced staff at the company give business presentations to our students, who canthen see at first hand the implications of the theorythat they hear about in the classroom.

We have a number of residential trips – sometimesfor a weekend, such as the Geography fieldtrips to

Norfolk, or sports team-building weekends at anoutward bound centre. Recently we have alsostarted running the Duke of Edinburgh AwardScheme in our school and this involves a numberof local expeditions and nights under canvas.

Longer residential visits include our very well established annual ski trips, usually to St. Anton inAustria and our food trips to France, Spain or Italy – both of which we have around twenty yearsexperience of running!

A highlight of last summer (to be repeated this year)was our activity holiday in the Ardèche. This area ofsouthern France is made up of beautiful countryside and a spectacular river set into a deepgorge: a great setting for a range of adventure activities such as canoeing, rock climbing, cavingand problem solving exercises. Everyone had athoroughly enjoyable time.

In September a group of our young sports leadersand staff visited Berkovista in Bulgaria. Here they notonly had the opportunity of seeing some breathtaking scenery, but had the task of organisingand running a Sports Festival for the children fromlocal schools and an orphanage. Not only did our

supervision throughout the trip. For specialist activities we make use of fully trained instructorsfrom professional providers who support our staffin ensuring that each one of our students has anenjoyable time and has some invaluable learningexperiences.

I am sure we all have treasured memories our ownschool trips that we went on in our childhood. It isinteresting to see how staff and students often getto know each other in a different light out of theclassroom context. I think that a few youngsterseven begin to think that some teachers are human! Our hope is to provide everyone with some cher-ished memories that they will be able to hold on tofor years to come.

young people work hard and enjoy themselves, their comments on returning to Shoeburynessshow that this truly was a life changing experiencefor them. One student said “My time in Bulgaria hasbeen amazing. I have cried a lot but laughed a lottoo. “

We are in the early stages of planning a very adventurous expedition to South Africa for thesummer of 2012. This is part of Operation Wallacea. The focus for this two week scientific trip will bewildlife, ecology and conservation, with opportunities to learn animal tracking skills. In addition students will take part in data collectionfor a biodiversity survey of large and small animalsand hear about game reserve management.

We, clearly, take our duty of care of young peoplevery seriously and careful preparation takes placefor all trips, this will include budget plans and riskassessments for all the activities as well as thorough
