Oracle configuration for home use
1) Make a copy of the “Hosts” file found in c:\Windows (or WINNT)\System32\Drivers\etc\ directory. 2) Open the original file in Notepad and add the line (simply copy and paste the line below): 131.96.101.32 altamaha altamaha.cis.gsu.edu 3) MAKE SURE YOU START A VPN CONNECTION BEFORE YOU START THE INSTALLATION!!! 4) After downloading and unzipping the product into a temporary directory, double-click on “Setup.exe.” The following screen will appear:
If during the installation, the Windows Firewall comes up and asks if you want to Block or Unblock an action, select UNBLOCK! 5) Change the default choice from “Basic Installation” to “Advanced Installation” (see graphic above). Click the “Next” button.
6) On this screen, again change the default choice. Instead, choose the last choice, “Custom” (shown in the graphic above). Click “Next.”
7) Accept the name and path and click “Next.”
8) Your choices for products to install cover this screen and the next two. Check off only the boxes you see on each screen.
9) Continue to check of the boxes you see above. This screen is merely a scroll-down from the previous windows.
10) Continue to scroll down and check off the final choice. Then click “Next.”
11) If you were successful, you’ll see the above screen. Click “Next.”
12) Change the default choice to “Install database Software only.” Click “Next.”
13) Now click “Install” 13) Keep the default choice and click “Next.” (However, you will not have access to this feature. Later on you’ll get an error message saying you don’t have access. Simple choose “Ignore” when you get this error message. In fact, you may not even see this screen. If so, skip this step).
14) If all is successful, you’ll see a screen similar to the one above.
15) Now go to the Windows “START” menu and look for the Oracle entry. Choose
the submenu, “Configuration and Migration Tools.” From this submenu choose a sub, sub menu called “Net Configuration Assistant.” If you did it correctly, you’ll get the following screen:
16) Choose “Next”
17) Keep the default choice (Add) and choose “Next.”
18) Keep the default choice and click “Next.”
19) Keep the default choice and choose “Next”
20) Change the default choice! For security reasons, we shall use port 1526 (you must enter this number), not the default port 1521.
21) Keep the default choice and choose “Next.”
22) Choose “Next”
23) We must next configure the local service…on the next screen (above), skip the second choice and choose the third radio box as shown. Click “Next”
24) Similar to the “Listener” configuration, we are going to ADD a new network service. Click “Next.”
25) Notice, I’ve filled in the name of the service we’ll use…it is called “stuisDB” (no quotes). Choose “Next.”
26) Keep the defaults on this screen. Choose “Next.”
27) Two very important items on this screen. First, the Host name is “altamaha” (no quotes)…if you did not modify your HOSTS file in step 2, you must enter the fully qualified URL; i.e., altamaha.cis.gsu.edu (do not use http://). Second, remember to change the default port number to 1526.
28) Change the default and choose “Yes, perform a test” Choose “Next.”
29) This error screen is normal…you have to give it a real login ID and password. Click on the “Change Login” button.
30) Use your own account id and password or use the bgates username and password (I told you the password in class). Almost done…if you did everything correctly, you should see:
31) Choose “Next.”
32) This screen simply verifies you are using the service you created in step 25. Choose “Next”
33) Keep the default (No) and choose “Next.” 34) On the next screen choose “Next” and then on the final screen choose “Finish” Congratulations. You’re now a partial DBA, you’ve installed Oracle.
