CHAIRMAN’S PIECE

These are difficult times for our Parish. Proposals by Bradford Council that the role of Treetops Children's Centre on Rawdon Road, Haworth should be changed to an 'out-reach' centre and that the public toilets in Haworth's Central Park should be closed because financial cuts, have been followed by the news that Haworth could lose the last of its Post Offices. Your Parish Council has made its voice heard on all three of these issues. Together with our District Councillor colleagues we, in the person of Cllr Trudy Mahon, organised a public meeting at West Lane Baptist Chapel to discuss the Treetops situation and after hearing what the 40 plus parents and supporters had to say we submitted a detailed objection before the deadline on January 17th. Cllrs Gary Swallow and Nikki Carroll appeared before the full meeting of Bradford Council on January 21st and both presented a petition against the toilet closure proposal while at the same time delivering a presentation of the case. We have already spoken with the Post Office about the possible options open to us regarding the future of Post Office services in the village. And, without being too optimistic, we were given a good hearing and I have reason to hope there might well be a way of keeping their services in the village. Time will tell on this one. There was also a major meeting concerning the future of Haworth Fire Station on Friday, January 17th. It was called by the Parish Council and their partners in this project, Keighley Town Council and Oxenhope Parish Council. It was attended by delegates from West Yorkshire Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, Calderdale Hill Rescue, Bradford Council, the Fire Brigades Union and the Haworth fire fighters. We were trying to find out, now that we are in the second year of the Fire Station's stay of execution from closure, whether other services would be interested in the project so that we could develop a plan for a 'hub' for emergency and community services in the Worth Valley. We're still analysing the results but we felt that it was a worthwhile exercise that could - with a fair wind - eventually yield dividends as the scheme unfolds. At the Parish Council meeting on Monday, January 20th we confirmed our budget for the 2014-15 civic year. We managed to come up with a budget that does not need any increase following the rise in last year's Precept.

Haworth In Bloom

There was a positive feel to the meeting and the first item to be discussed was how many planters, troughs and mangers were in place around the village and where they all were. Colour schemes were discussed and the main theme decided on is for various shades of yellow to be predominant interspersed with green foliage to emphasize the Tour de France le Grand Depart due to come through Haworth along Mill Hey, up Bridgehouse and Main Street, and leave the village via West Lane. The colour scheme is not to be regimented and other floral displays are to be encouraged. Watering the planters etc. was discussed and is a major challenge for the group. Ideally there will be teams of people in place to care for each area and not to leave it to one person as it is recognized as a major and unfair strain on volunteers. This will be discussed more fully at a later date when more volunteers are encouraged to come forward and help. ‘Green Fingers’ are not a requirement to join the group. A love of flowers and help with clearing clutter and litter is what is necessary. However, ‘Green Fingers’ are welcome! Because of the crowds expected during the T de F weekend (July 5th & 6th) and probable resultant damage to plants etc. it has been decided to ask the ‘In Bloom’ judges to come before that weekend. Suppliers are to be tasked with bringing seedlings/plants up to bloom in time.

I believe that the budget we have voted through represents real value for money. It gives us money to invest in such projects as the Neighbourhood Development Plan and the Community Development Plan while at the same time giving us sufficient funds to support such projects as Haworth in Bloom, various other environmental projects and support us as we fight to retain key local services threatened by closure. We have taken great care to be what one recent Prime Minister called 'prudent'. We believe that we have succeeded in that ambition.

Haworth – Disqualified Driver Caught Behind The Wheel

On Sunday 12th January a 43 year old man from Otley was stopped in Haworth by officers after he was observed using a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle. Officers discovered the man was also disqualified from driving. He was subsequently arrested and charged with driving whilst disqualified, having no insurance and using a mobile phone while driving a motor vehicle. He will appear at Bradford Magistrates Court later this month.

Bradford Council have introduced the Green Dog Walkers® scheme aimed at

reducing the number of incidents of dog fouling across the Wards.

The aim is to recruit volunteers who will approach other dog walkers whilst out

with their own dogs and make sure they have bags with them. If not, the

volunteers can provide the bags along with a leaflet asking them to sign up to the

scheme.

Once signed up, the dog walkers will wear a green arm band demonstrating to the

public that they have signed up to support the scheme.

See ‘Your Community’ pages on www.bradford.gov.uk or email

[email protected]

What’s the green armband for? If you see someone wearing the Green Dog

Walkers® armband, it means they have “Taken the Pledge”

to always clean up after their dog

to carry extra doggie bags

gladly give you a bag for your dog - just ask!

A friendly reminder… Green Dog Walkers® is a non-confrontational, friendly

way to change attitudes about dog fouling in the Bradford area.

The Facts...

52% of UK households have a pet

there are 7 million UK dog owners!

Did you know that primary school children and footballers are most at risk

from diseases from dog fouling? After it has lain on the ground for two

weeks, worms develop and these diseases and others can cause: toxacara

canis, roundworm, salmonella, E-coli, resulting in pneumonia, asthma and

blindness. However, it IS SAFE to clean it up on the spot!

The Rotary Club of Haworth & Worth Valley have been running their Contact the Elderly afternoon teas for the past 12 months. We now have seven guests attending on a regular basis and they all enjoy their monthly outing very much. This is an excellent project to be involved with but to enable the event to continue we desperately need some extra volunteers who would be willing to pick up and drive our guests. The teas are organised once a month on a Sunday afternoon. The volunteers would be required to drive 3 or 4 times per year and most journeys are in the Haworth area.

For further details please ring Hilary Wharton on

01535 647531 Our annual International day will be held on Saturday 5th April in Haworth Parish church from 11am until 4pm. Rotary club members will showcase many of the International projects they are involved in such as TradeAid, Mary's Meals and Shelterbox. To raise funds refreshments will be available all day and there will also be a sale table.

The Bandstand

At last your wait is nearly over. The new Bandstand is due to be erected and in place by the end of March, weather permitting.

The Bandstand working group is busy putting together a programme of celebration in June. The precise date to follow. If you want to be considered for a spot in the programme, we are pulling together a variety of entertainment for your enjoyment. Besides a Brass Band we want to include dance, drama and other kinds of music to demonstrate the versatility that the new performance space can offer. Other local performers are also welcome to apply to showcase their abilities.
