6" COTTON WHEEL AND 6" SISAL WHEEL Many farriers have been using these wheeltypes instead of the felt wheel for knifehoning. Both wheels require the use of abuffing compound. The wheels have a 1/2"arbor and fit our 1/4 hp Baldor Buffer units.

GENERAL SAFETYGUIDELINESWorking with abrasive products andmachinery can be hazardous to both operatorsand bystanders. If an abrasive belt breaksduring operation, there can be serious injuryto the eyes, face, and/or other parts of thebody not protected by adequate equipment.Grinding sparks and dust particles can alsocause serious injury by contact or inhalation.Always read and follow the instructions for useon all products and machinery beforebeginning to work. Always use appropriateprotective glasses, face shields and bodyprotection. Do not exceed maximum operatingRPM of machinery. Use the guards providedwith the machine and/or attachments. Finally, follow all safety operating procedures postedin work areas.
Personal Protective EquipmentAlways wear impact-resistant protectiveglasses and full face shield when involved ingrinding operations. In addition, always wearsafety shoes, arm guards, leather gloves andaprons.
Abrasive Belt Equipment PrecautionsAlways observe the safety recommendationssupplied by the manufacturer of your grinder.Never run an abrasive belt or an unfamiliarmachine without obtaining and following theinstructions.
SAFE OPERATINGINSTRUCTIONSAlways begin work with an inspection forsafe operating conditions, as follows:• The abrasive belt and expander wheel
should be enclosed in a sheet metalhood to confine flying sparks, grindingdust, fumes, and to provide protectionshould a belt break.
• An adequate exhaust system should beused, with the duct at the grinding areafor all applications that create airbornedust. Wear an appropriate governmentapproved respirator to help reducecontaminant exposure. Excessiveinhalation can cause serious injury.Additional precautions may be necessaryfor grinding materials that are flammableor have other hazardous properties.Consult manufacturers of such materialsfor instructions on grinding and handling.Use a work piece fixture wheneverpossible; the fixture holds the work piecemore securely and may afford someprotection if the work piece jams.
ABRASIVE BELT PRECAUTIONS AND USEThe following precautions should beregarded concerning the operation ofabrasive belts:• Store the belts at 35% - 50% relative
humidity and 60-80 degrees F. Never usean abrasive belt with a nicked or cutedge, a crease or handling damage.
To begin using the belt, take note of thefollowing guidelines:• If the belt is not bidirectional, there will be
an arrow pointing one direction on thebacking. The belt should be installed withthe arrow running in the direction of thewheel.
• Make sure the abrasive belt fully coversthe face of the contact wheel. A partiallyuncovered wheel face will cause snaggingand throwing of the work piece.
• Jog the machine to start abrasive belttracking. A sudden full power start couldcause the belt to track off the machine
• Check the sound of the running abrasivebelt. If a ticking sound or bumping noiseoccurs, stop the machine and check forpossible belt or machine damage.
• Abusive operations can cause belt tobreak apart causing serious injury.
• Sparks and particles flying off the productcan injure or cause fire.
• REMOVE FLAMMABLE MATERIALSFROM THE WORK AREA.
• DIRECT sparks away from face and body.
• Provide appropriate local exhaust. Ifexhaust ventilation is not adequate, wearapproved dust protection to preventinhalation of dust particles.
• DO NOT mix metal swarf with wood, plastic or rubber swarf in the same dustcollector to prevent a fire hazard.
• CONSULT with engineering/safetypersonnel for flammability hazards.
• Make sure no one is standing in front orback of the belt when starting machine.
• AVOID CONTACT with belt edge orsurface when it is in motion or severe cutsand abrasions could result.
• Incorrect storage could affect safety aswell as product performance.
• DO NOT use belts with abnormally curledshape.
• STORE surface conditioning products attemperatures below 150 F (65 C) and limitexposure to water and high humidity.
• REPLACE belts when damaged (kinked, cracked, nicked, torn folded or containingholes) or worn out.
• STOP immediately if vibration or unusualnoises occur during use. Determine causeand correct before continuing.
