• Optical Network Unit has tunable upstream laser as well as a tunable receiver

• 4 wavelengths (10G/2.5G per wavelength, total 40G/10G) in the downstream,

with an option of up to 8

• Up to 4 wavelengths in the upstream

• Possible symmetric configuration: 40G/40G or 10G/10G

• RF overlay at 1550nm is not affected by NG-PON2

PON Evolution

• Dedicated wavelength per user

• Typically 32 users

• Requires 32/64 colours

• No real standards

“Real” WDM PON

• 4-8 channels, each carrying a “normal” PON

• Users subscribed to one of the channels

• Requires extra filters, add complexity

Customer Premises Equipment (CPE)

Service Provider’s regard the CPE as demarcation point for their

services and termination of the FTTH line

• 2 major types of CPE approaches, depending on the service offering

• ONT (Optical Network Termination)

Terminates incoming fibre and provides Ethernet Interface(s) towards the

subscriber

• Residential Services Gateway

Combined ONT and Service termination

• Mostly Voice/Data combinations

• Routing

• Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi)

• Security and firewall

• Integrated VoIP and

• Quality of service capabilities

Summary

• Fibre to the Home is the future-proof architecture in the Next Generation

Access (NGA) networks, as a key enabler for Gigabit Society.

• More than 280 Million subscribers have FTTH/B access over the world, which

will significantly increase in next 5-10 years.

• Different FTTH technologies are based on optical fibre communications.

• Both active and passive infrastructure of FTTH benefits from photonic

technologies.
